(Original Air Date: 04/27/06) Morbid obesity changes the dynamic of two entire families … and tears them apart. DeeDee weighs over 700 pounds and hasn't left her house in more than a year. She has become a burden to her friends and family by constantly demanding their help and company. Is DeeDee ready to get real and make a change, or will she continue to blame her weight gain on other circumstances? Also, her children explain why they resent their mother and feel hostage to her demands. Then, MaLynn is only 14 years old, but she already weighs 419 pounds, and her obesity is causing problems in school. Her mother, Shari, admits she can't say no to her daughter when it comes to food. Dr. Phil shows MaLynn how she can easily lose 86 pounds, and he gets this mother-daughter team to work together to save their relationship and their lives. Talk about the show here.

Find out what happened on the show.

04/27 Big Burden

No one gets to be over 500lbs without something in the body going awry...

Saiety disorders are real and this lady obviously feels HUNGER at a level that most ordinary thin people do not considering the problem admitted she has with food.  I am a fat person and I KNOW for a fact my body does not work the same as thin peoples. In fact even when I was young and seeking to exercise, I know I had difficulty even before the weight came on. I know my hunger levels are more intense then a thin person's. This is not an excuse but a reality I have to deal with. But if no one is honest about this, how are they going to get any help?

Anyone who thinks this is a CHOICE, is kidding themselves. It isnt. There are people with eating disorders, and psychological problems but there are people with severe metabolic issues including everything from severe insulin problems, to Stein Leventhl, thyroid, pseudo-or actual Cushings. I faced some of that latter stuff myself going undiagnosed for years, and nearly becoming a statistic. Not saying all my problems are solved, but people assume the worse about obesity and they believe everything the diet-industry which makes millions off of folks, teaches.

I find myself wondering if she was given steroids for the spider bite. Yes I believe a good part of her problem is food considering the testimony of her children  but unknown to many is that steroids can reset the weight set point in a person. I believe that certain drugs can have a influence on the hunger control in the brain...[even some of the endocrine problems influence this]  Its a uncommon side effect but it does occur. I am glad Dr. Phil is offering her medical help.

Many people in this country are facing severe weight problems and there is very little help out there...I know I find myself asking why cant a severely fat person get help at a physical therapists place in LEARNINg to exercise or having medical supervison. Once you are over a certain weight it is harder to breathe and moving is difficult. This lady is on oxygen, and wheelchair bound, she needs intensive REHAB help to even learn to exercise.

Why is cheap BAD FOR YOU FOOD so easy to get and the healthy stuff so expensive and harder to obtain especially if you live in a rural area? {I found myself today putting vegetables I couldnt afford back at the grocery store to my consertation} Almost without fail the healthier it is, the huger price tag they got slapped on it. One cant eat rice and beans for every meal, and carbohydrate sensitive people might as well forget it.

Deal Breaker

It is interesting, Dr. Phil, how you refer to your drug/alcohol addicted guests as "deal breakers" when it comes to their relationships but the tender white supportive gloves come out when dealing with the morbidly obese.  Why are these people not "deal breakers?"  Addictions come in all forms.

Also wouldn't a great intervention for this woman be the Duke University morbidly obese program?  It is recognized world wide as the most comprehensive in patient facility for these people whose lives are at risk.  I think she is sadly beyond the scope of in-home diet and monitored exercise.  I also think the family needs a break but with therapy to prepare them for her eventual homecoming.

I also am hypothyroid.  I had been the same weight since high school until my thyroid went on strike.  Now it's very very difficult to lose weight.  I have a very good doctor who keeps things under control hormonally but it's just not the same as before.  Believe it or not, there are those of us out there who really do have a glandular problem!  :-)
 Im with you on this..

Now imagine having three glandular problems at once...thats a trip and half...

People today think when people mention glandular problems that they are full of it. its not true!

I lost all my hair, gained 30lbs a month...skin problems, took YEARS to be diagnosed.

I do remember ONE thing though, I STOPPED GAINING after I was treated...

Thoose poor kids

I totaly feel for those kids. That was my life.I wish I could tell them to support their Mom and be mean if they have to.Don't let her guilt them into giving her food.My Mom was the same way.Believe me it's not easy.My Mom is courantly in a nurseing home that helps people lose weight. She could no longer take care of herself anymore. My Dad could not take care of her any more.

I totlay know what it's like to be held captive by love for a parent.

I love Dee Dee and the 14 yr old.

Dee Dee is so awesome and I just love her personality and she is attractive.  You almost don't even notice the weight.  And the 14 yr old girl is a sweetheart too.  I blame her mother.  Her mother is a real piece of work, but the girl is nice and I'm sure he will get them both the help they need and they will be thinner soon.

If it is, according to some people, a genetic thing then why is it that in Europe people aren't as large as the Americans. Only in the last few years people in Europe are becoming larger than ever, but rarely you see someone as large as I see them often in the States. I do think it is more a problem in lifestyle.

I think the main reason of becoming obese is eating unhealthy fast food and no excersise. People don't take time anymore to eat  and prepare meals together. My American neighbours for instance never cooked a proper meal (fresh vegetables, homegrilled chicken, fruits; sometimes they didn't even know how to prepare them or what they looked like raw), never ate together( wow you REALLY always have breakfast and dinner together at the table??) and drove their children to the tenniscourt ( 10 minute walk tops) and back home (after a stop at Wendy's for dinner).  In supermarkets you have to search for the vegetables and fruitsection (way back in the store, in Europe the first thing you see when you enter the store) and you don't buy normal sized packages but kingsize(and believe me you finish them as fast as normal size).

Unfortunately the Europeans more and more get into the "American" habits too and are becoming larger and larger.

I'm not saying that in Europe everything is better but in this case you can clearly see the differences in lifestyle.

I bet if I moved to Europe Id lose 100lbs the first year without even trying..

1. Nutritious food..not pumped full of sugar and fat  and hormones for profit...open markets CHOCK full of AFFORDABLE vegetables.

2. More relaxed lifestyle..more time for leisure, vacations,  more exercise through sociability...Europeans interact more and have more of an active life between one another. I am involved in community here, and just getting people off the couch, [healthy people at that] is nearly impossible.

3. The Slow Food movement in Europe is an interesting one.

Americans need to learn how to eat and live properly again...

DeeDee & Family are LOVES!!

We watched today's show and were deeply touched by DeeDee and her family.  Her strength and determination to help herself and her children are admirable.  And her husband seemed to be a wonderful man.  DeeDee's son touched us the most because of his loving attitude and sense of morality.  We will be praying for this family.  We believe they have even more of a chance for success than any we've seen in a long time.  GOD BLESS THEM!

That is an interesting point.

I don't agree with any of it being a deal break automatically and I have seen Dr Phil help many many many people all kinds of additions. So I am not sure why you brought this up. I remember a woman who was addicted to pain killers and even selling them and he didn't advice people to leave her.

You could tell these kids adored and loved their mother deeply.  There was no need for this to be a deal breaker. They loved her and wanted to help her.

Dr Phil does NOT advice people to leave addicts.

For MaLynn

MaLynn reminds me of myself as a teen, and she needs to know that she can do it!!!!  She has her youth on her side, and she will be amazed at how much her body will change as she follows the right diet and exercise program.  MaLynn is a beautiful young woman with a beautiful spirit.  (She also has awesome hair!)  She needs to know that there are a lot of people who are rooting for her!  I wished I could have given her a hug when Dr. Phil was talking to her and her eyes teared up.

MaLynn, I was in your shoes once, and I changed my life, as will you.  You have your entire life ahead of you, and it will be wonderful!
