(Original Air Date: 04/27/06) Morbid obesity changes the dynamic of two entire families … and tears them apart. DeeDee weighs over 700 pounds and hasn't left her house in more than a year. She has become a burden to her friends and family by constantly demanding their help and company. Is DeeDee ready to get real and make a change, or will she continue to blame her weight gain on other circumstances? Also, her children explain why they resent their mother and feel hostage to her demands. Then, MaLynn is only 14 years old, but she already weighs 419 pounds, and her obesity is causing problems in school. Her mother, Shari, admits she can't say no to her daughter when it comes to food. Dr. Phil shows MaLynn how she can easily lose 86 pounds, and he gets this mother-daughter team to work together to save their relationship and their lives. Talk about the show here.

Find out what happened on the show.

Wake Up Call

Whoa.  todays episode made me cry, and remember my childhood.  The first woman on the show made me think of my grandmother.. she (i believe) is on the same road as the lady was.  Except her "excuse" isnt a spider bite, its diabetes.  the show just made me have such remorse for my grandmother, and the lady on the show.  It made me remember my childhood because my whole life, I have struggled with my weight.  Although I wasnt to the extreme as the young girl on the show, it still wasnt healthy for me.

Overall, this show reminded me how hard I have tried now.. and will in my future.. to fight obesity.  Especially since half of my family are obese.  I am going to change that factor with myself and my future family.  Thank you Dr.Phil for awakening me gain.  Thank You!!!

re: white sugar, and chemicals

Refined white sugar- which is in EVERYTHING disrupts the metabolism. You can do a search for sugar bad and come up with 100 things that sugar does to harm the body. Add in all the chemicals, dyes, preservatives in all the food, and people wonder why we're dealing with an epidemic of weight issues, depression, and ADD, ADHD, etc.    When schools have switched out of all junk food and only served wholesome, healthy, sugar free foods, the kids' performances, personalities, and weight changed all for the better.

To lose weight--- immediately stop eating all foods with white sugar, chemicals, dyes, anything that has words you can't pronounce- and substitute those same foods with the same healthy version of those foods from a Whole Foods or other health food stores, and you'll be amazed!!!

When I eat white sugar now (and believe me, I indulge my sweet tooth and crunchy cravings with plenty of wholesome cookies, chips, spritzers, all from Whole Foods)  I get a sugar headache and eyeache. It's amazing how much havoc the crap wreaks on your system. I believe even Robin doesn't eat white sugar.... (Though they did serve an awful lot of it to all the kids at their Christmas party- yikes!)

Losing Weight

I watched a show that had a woman on it that lost a whole lot of weight. She lost so much her skin was hanging around her. The operations were going to leave bad scars. I went off my diet because I did not want to end up looking like that. When I started the diet my weight was 243 lbs. I am now 200 pounds. I stopped the diet out of fear.

After today’s show I am back on my diet and exercising and I intend to go back to my plan of getting my weight down to 150 lbs. Why because it scared the devil out of me. I did not want to end up gaining weight so much that losing would never happen. I do not want to get depressed over all the weight gained again.

Being large runs in my fathers side of the family. I have always been a little over weight all of my life. I have been yoyo dieting now for 30 years. Up to 170 pounds down to 132 and back up again and down again. I am honestly sick of it. I finally reached 243 pounds that was the final straw for me.

So I have compassion for the girl who is 14 her weight is 419 pounds I hope we can see her in the future. I also have compassion for the woman who's weight is over 700 pounds. How easy it is to condemn a person who is over weight if you have been the perfect weight or under weight all your life. It must be nice to be able to sit down and eat and eat and never gain a pound. It must be nice to be able to sit down to three meals a day and enjoy your meal and not leave the table hungary.

It's must be wonderful not to suffer from depression every day of your life. So instead of condemning a person have some compassion and encourage the person on. I think it is wonderful that they ask for Dr. Phil's help and are going to get it!

I'm so mad!

I hate watching shows like this one because I always end up furious.  I am not at the point that I am in as deep as the people on the show today, but my weight is impacting my life every day and in some serious ways.  I've read all the books, watched all the Dr. Phil shows, read magazines, talked to doctors, seen nutritionists, gone to NutriSystem, gone to WeightWatchers, etc.  I even started a more intense exercise program after the Dr. Phil Weight Loss Challenge shows.  Guess what results I got.... I tore my achilles tendon and now I am not supposed to walk at all anymore.

How do *I* keep from getting to be 700 lbs?  I am coming up on age 40 a lot faster than I'm comfortable with and there doesn't seem to be any way to get out of my pattern and get healthy!  I keep staying tuned during commercials because Dr. Phil says "We'll tell you what we're going to do when we get back".  But it turns out that he's going to hook them up with a membership at a gym, doctors and nutritionists.  Where is my answer?  What am *I* supposed to do here at home?

I ask my doctor if I should be seeing an endochronologist (spelling? sorry) or if I need bio-chemical and hormonal tests.  She says my thyroid looks pretty normal and I don't need to worry about the rest.  I just need to count my carbs and keep my blood sugar in control.  But that isn't helping me.  I've been doing that since 2000 and I've managed to gain 30 more pounds, putting me over 300 lbs.

I'd love to have a personal trainer who could help me strengthen enough that I can do aerobic exercise without hurting myself further.  I would love to have someone sit down with me and help me figure out what is a healthy, balanced diet for me.  I would love to have a doctor who could give me some answers I can apply to real life and use to figure out how to get well.  But Dr. Phil isn't knocking on my door and I'm not so sure I'd answer if he did.  I know I couldn't set myself up to see and hear the ridicule from the masses out there in TV-Watching Land.

But what do I do?  I can do the diet programs and have some limited success (like the person earlier in the discussion who said they lost 22 lbs on WW.  That kind of success.)  But when I stop the paid program, I find myself at a loss as to what to do for dinner.  I find myself standing in the grocery store with this confused look on my face until I feel so completely stupid I just go home and order a pizza or microwave something from Costco.

I know I have the power to fix this, but I am lacking the resources and the ability to put it all together in a customized form for me.  I'm trying again with a new book I got, but I'm afraid it will again be all too overwhelming with few results and huge effort.  I'm afraid that I'm going to fail again and soon it will be me who is 700 lbs and trapped in my house until I die.

i agree

Hopefully Dr Phil can give help to the obese 14 year old.  She's so young and heading in such a horrible direction.  Because of her age, hopefully it'll be a success story down the road

i agree...high school especially is going to be pure hell for her if she stays that weight or gets heavier. It will make it even worse if she is depressed and anti-social. I really hope her mother can help support her instead of just not saying anything because she doesn't want to hurt her daughter's feelings. The mother is not helping her at all by letting her eat that way!

genetics is becoming an excuse

First of all, I'm not thin. I eat way too much junk and don't work out like I should. But I get really tired of people talking about how they are obese becuase of genetics.... if you go back just a few generations, you seem to do away with the fat genes. Our ansestors that never even heard of fast food and had to work in the fields all day weren't fat, our genes come from them. I'm not saying that genes aren't a factor at all, but come on. And some people are big because of other issues like thyroid, which is a different issue. This whole Obesety epidemic hasn't just become such an issue becuase more than half of America's genes changed in one or two generations. It's all started since the fast food boom and since everything has to be convenient now, it's the new american mantality.

European Habits = Healthier Bodies

Quote From: peepinbud

I bet if I moved to Europe Id lose 100lbs the first year without even trying..

1. Nutritious food..not pumped full of sugar and fat  and hormones for profit...open markets CHOCK full of AFFORDABLE vegetables.

2. More relaxed lifestyle..more time for leisure, vacations,  more exercise through sociability...Europeans interact more and have more of an active life between one another. I am involved in community here, and just getting people off the couch, [healthy people at that is nearly impossible.

3. The Slow Food movement in Europe is an interesting one.

Americans need to learn how to eat and live properly again...

I can't imagine what brought on this seemingly sudden discussion about Europe and the lifestyle.  But, coincidentally, I lived in Europe (France) for a number of years.  The real reason I lost weight  living there was because I could walk to the store, to my friends' houses, and almost everywhere I needed to go.  I only took my car out about once a week (also, gas was over $6/gallon)!  Yes, they do have those fresh vegetable markets, BUT where do you live???  We have them too!!!  Hello?  The problem here is that we don't walk or exercise enough and (not me) too many people eat fast foods.  Europeans also do not drink soda pop very much - ahem!!

My own weight problem

After I having my 3 children I gained a lot of weight, and It's so hard to lose it.  And I just can't seem to stick to an exercise regiment I want to lose this extra weight and I know it won't happen over night it's going to take a lot of work.  I know how to lose the weight I just need the motivation to do it.  I love going for a 3 mile hike, and I have fun when I do, it's the getting out there to do it.  My mother always said I was a house cat LOL but I was always slim and slender weighing 120lbs, now weighing 180 I just feel huge.

My son has Cystic Fibrosis and he needs a high calorie high fat meal.  He has a hard time gaining weight and the Dr. said that eating at McDonald's is very healthy for him. He loved the Dr. after he said that  Unfortunately it's not healthy on me LOL so I try to do the smart thing and get a salad but then I'm hungry about 1/2 hour later.  I LOVE veggies and fruit and try to eat that when I feel snacky.  i just can't seem to lose this extra weight.  Now that it's spring time I will get out more and walk.  Winter is the hardest to get through because it's so cold out I don't want to leave the house.

If I don't do something about this soon I can see myself gaining more weight and getting out of control.  I can see how it could be a downward spiral,  add depression and I can see how some people could gain a lot of weight.

i agree. Im disgusted with the way our food is pumped up with steroids and chemicals. Its no wonder people are getting these kinds of diseases! I myself have ulcerative colitis which has had a huge effect on my life. I think more people need to pay attention to all the bad things in their food.
