(Original Air Date: 04/27/06) Morbid obesity changes the dynamic of two entire families … and tears them apart. DeeDee weighs over 700 pounds and hasn't left her house in more than a year. She has become a burden to her friends and family by constantly demanding their help and company. Is DeeDee ready to get real and make a change, or will she continue to blame her weight gain on other circumstances? Also, her children explain why they resent their mother and feel hostage to her demands. Then, MaLynn is only 14 years old, but she already weighs 419 pounds, and her obesity is causing problems in school. Her mother, Shari, admits she can't say no to her daughter when it comes to food. Dr. Phil shows MaLynn how she can easily lose 86 pounds, and he gets this mother-daughter team to work together to save their relationship and their lives. Talk about the show here.

Find out what happened on the show.

What exaxtly is that. Does that have something to do with the brain and appetite.

I thought I heard somewhere (probably on Dr.Phil) that if lepton was missing or maybe if it was some part of the brain not funtioning properly. Then a person could eat something and not even feel full on a full stomach. Basically people would keep eating and that may be a problem that would lead them to obesity......

Was the research paper for college???I did one once on Obesity

Disgusting

People are too fat because they eat a ton of crap and they don't exercise. It is really disgusting to think of how poorly they take care of their bodies and how they blame stupid things like spider bites for a 400 pound weight gain. I will never understand how someone can get to 700 pounds before finally doing something about it. Come on - why wait until you are stuck in bed and can't bathe or move or leave the house? When I go out to restaurants to eat I am constantly amazed at the amount of food people consume. Life is all about choices. I choose to eat healthy food and to exercise daily and to take care of myself and not become overweight. People like this are lazy and undisciplined in my opinion. And her children are just as stupid for bringing all that fattening food to her.

Yes the paper was for college. Leptin is a protein hormone that plays a key role in regulating energy intake and energy expenditure, including the regulation of appetite and metabolism. Many feel the lack of it may be why there are super morbidly obese people.

Where does all the food come from?

I am wondering who buys enough food to ENABLE someone to eat the quantity of food neccessary to become 700lbs. Once the person has become disabled, someone else is culpable! Just who is paying for the food, who is shopping, cooking, delivering it. What are the mechanics of the situation? Just as I won't feed my kids soda and junk food (rarely as a treat) even though they clamor for it, the family needs to take control of her diet. Same as you do with a child. The only thing is perhaps they have no idea what is healthy if they have been raised by someone who grew to 700lbs. and they themselves are struggling with weight.

14 year old

I hope the 14 year old can get some help. And I hope it works for her.  I self always had a little bit overweight, --> 7 kg. Now I have lost 5 kg and I feel so much better. And more confedent. It must be realy bad to weight so much, espacely if you're so yung you can't always help that.

I would say to her: YOU'RE GREAT, you can do it! And remember way you are doing it. With every 5 kg lost, you will feel much better. I promise it's treu.

This is a very shallow take on a very deep eating disorder...I am sure you wouldn't be this cruel to someone with anorexia or bulimia.

Have a little EMAPTHY.

responsibility

We have come to a day and age where we can find some excuse to be the person we are and act the way we do. Nothing is ever ones own fault anymore. People need to take a hard look in the mirror and accept responsibilty for themselves. Nobody holds us down and makes us over eat. I think we know when we are eating for comfort. It becomes our responsibilty to find other alternatives. Shame on people who do not help us when we ask for it but shame on us for not reaching out for help. When people start accepting their role in their unhappiness and overindulgence, then and only then will they find the power to conquere.

you could not possibly understand why people become obese if you have never been there. I am obese. I have already lost 73lbs but I am still obese. I am choosing to lose the weight now but I never said to myself, "I want to be obese and have no energy and have people talk about me!"

I could tell you my life story but the things that drove me to eat are too personal and painful. It is simple to look at the surface and say that "people are too fat because  they eat a ton of crap and don't exercise..." but it is too easy to judge when you do not know the reason behind the behavior.

Let ye who know what it is like to be obese cast the first stone!
