The purpose of this board is to debate your views about a particular religion or belief. I understand Religion is a touchy subject, but this board is designed for you to ask questions as well as present arguments for your particular Religion or belief.

You can definitely challenge others, but no calling others names. Feel free to debate away.

Debating Among Different Religious Beliefs

Quote From: elffie

I recently had a Jehovah Witness come to my house ( I know, it was very interesting!). I invited them into my home.   Needless to say that they didn't want to stay, instead they said they would come back.  They gave me some pamplets to read over.........so I did.  My question to you, and I will ask them when they come back (if they do) is what does this verse below mean?  Does it mean you do beleive in reincarnation?  It sounds to me like it has a hint of Karma in it.  Those who do good in this life will be rewarded in their next and those who do evil will be punished.  I'm curious to know what you all think of it.

Thanks.

Elffie

28"Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice 29and come out—those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned.

I did not look up the verse but they are probably talking about when Christ returns for his church (the believers), they will rise from the grave as well as those still living and will spend eternity with Him and those who did not accept Christ as their Saviour will be condemned, will not make it to heaven.................As far as jehovahs Witnesses go, though I do believe there are good people in the organization, i do not believe all their teachings, this one in particular I do believe but like I said I did not go to the verse to read it, therfore I cannot say how accurate it is. Just my thoughts. I do not believe in reincarnation meaning that we will come back as some one else (or something else) but I do bleieve that we will have a new body in Christ when He comes come....................

Reincarnation or Resurrection?

Quote From: elffie

The pamphlet was talking about an old man who was on his death bed.  When he finally died the church memebers were comforting his wife and they put this verse in.  When the Witnesses came to the door they asked my husband if he had lost a loved one and if he would like to see them again.

So I read the pamphlete and this is the verse that they used.  John 5:28,29.

I googled it (because I remember there being talk of the ever so great biblegateway.com =) ) to see if this was an actuall verse and it is.

I was wondering what everyone on this board thought this verse meant.  Even if you don't believe in reincarnation, does this sound like it to you?

Elffie

Hello Elffie.  (I am Christian) and my opinion is this;

I don't believe we are reincarnated as someone or something else.  I prefer the term resurrection, but if reincarnation is used as in the definition below, I have no trouble using that term:

  1. Rebirth of the soul in another body.
  2. A reappearance or revitalization in another form; a new embodiment:

The bible says that we Christians will be resurrected with new bodies free of disease and pain.  But we will be ourselves, and not resurrected as a friend, neighbor, relative or animal, etcetera.

Thank you for asking.

Debating Among Different Religious Beliefs

Quote From: elffie

They did that to her?  What about him?!

I replied to Cheryl about a website that you should check out also.  It says that the term may actually have meant "young woman".  Nothing sexual at all.

"Never been sexually active", sure, that's what people today define it as.

I wonder why?

Hello again.  Read the section under family and marriage on this web site.  I remember seeing news reports on television about Diana undergoing pelvic exams to verify her virginity.  It angered me back then, because I had heard that Charles was romping with whomever he pleased, but his bride had to be a virgin (intercourse free).

To Jetta and Hazel Eyes

Thanks for responding.  It makes sense now.  They beleive they will be resurected when Jesus comes.

I know that many probably know this, but I do beleive in reincarnation and when I read this it interested me.

Thanks again.

Why is it that the woman are always being checked for something?

How degrading.

Pagan rituals... cool

Quote From: elffie

Don't get me started on how many things are actually Pagan. LOL  I've written about this before.  In one of my many Pagan books is where I saw this definition.

Take care.

Elffie

I guess I wont get you started but FYI I would most likely be right behind you in the topic.  I was very young when I first heard that the christmas tree was a pagan ritual and ever since then found it interesting on how many rituals have the home base built from paganism, druidism and several other ancient beliefs.

They book I found the 'never been married' definition was covering many ancient information about the differences of terms we use today verses the true origin or original meanings.  We have seen many words in our own generations mutate into a totally different meaning then the origin of the word.  Gay being one that comes to mind.  Fat being another it once meant a feeling of fullness after a large meal.  Now means or leans towards obese.  In slang terms it takes on a different meaning entirely.

My over all point was to show that one cannot and should not take the text word for word by using todays standards.  It is best to include the entire origianl means as well as the era it was worded in.  There is just more to the story that some people do not wish to understand or forsee.

Victims then?

Quote From: hazel_eyes

Christians do not pity themselves.  The bible tells them what to expect (ie: persecution), because it happened to Jesus Christ.

Christians as individuals do indeed see themselves as victims all the time.  I see it constantly in my job.  I hear it almost constantly how sad thier lives are and how mistreated they are if not as a group then as an indivivual.  Not just on one topic of faith or religion but in all ways and walks of life for as many of reasons as there are people in your life daily.  To say that Christians do not pity themselves or play victim is a blindness on your behalf.  Christians are not suppose to feel these feelings for the sake of thier belief yet as the simple fact remains we are all human and face human evils daily one of which is the new trend of being victimised for the rest of the word to pity.

Don't take offense in anyway to what I said just understand that there are many many levels for ANYone to play victim 'poor pity me" card.  I have heard many such complaints and pitiful stories from many a Christian who then later concludes with a "but I am not complaining" comment.

old vs new

old difination of virgin was to define what we would call single mother or once was bastard birth now adays.  virgin back then was not defined to be "never sexually active" as least not until the leaders of the time got ahold of the story telling and controled it to what they believed or wanted the people to believe.

King JAmes Version of the bible is King James'  version of the bible.  He wanted to contol his people and he used a bible rewrite to do it.  Many aspects of his bible is full of verations of the orginial stories.

Also case to note that the gospels were indeed writen well after all events took place and in fact were written not by the titled authors but by a follower.  Ever played that telephone game with a large group of people?

I am not going to overly debate the bible context for many versions are out in publications and various definitions for each passage can be found.  which one is the correct one?  who is to rightfully know in the grand skeme of things.

I will say the RIGHT one is the one an individual can understand and make it his or her own.  I have several versions myself... only one I enjoy the most.... still I stay true to my Belief in God the way he has shown me to be right for me.

Eternal Soul

My mom has one of the bibles that show King James/New International/Living Bible/REvised Standard all side by side.  Interesting read that way.  One reason I found that one can very well interpet the Bible differently.

I believe that passages touches on the eternal soul or as I see is our eternal self.  We ourselves never die for we are born in/from God.  We are eternal beings only our life here in this form is of life and death.

All this is in conflict with itself for one is an absolute the other is a varient not easily accepted.

I beleive if you read it is a spiritual light without prejudicing it to human nature and faults it would speak of our constant life with God and simplicity of choice.

NOT AT ALL

Then maybe they truly are not complaning.....face it life sucks for a lot of people, and many bear a hard burdon.  I dont think its right to say christians complain because they are christian just say some people complain more than others....i know many faiths that complain ALL THE SAME.....Just because you are christian does not mean we expect people to pity us that is so not the way it is  I for one do not at all see my self as a victim do to my faith.....I SURELY SEE JESUS AS ONE... for obvious reasons  but i just think that we as humans complain its in our blood our nature and just apart of life    sometimes it just sucks!!!!!!!!!!!          ABURKES
