The purpose of this board is to debate your views about a particular religion or belief. I understand Religion is a touchy subject, but this board is designed for you to ask questions as well as present arguments for your particular Religion or belief.

You can definitely challenge others, but no calling others names. Feel free to debate away.

Debating Among Different Religious Beliefs

Quote From: purplepenny

I personally put less weight in Psychology as a science then something like biology and geology.

You have to understand what Julie is saying. The human mind is MUCH harder to understand than something like radiometric dating.  There is a catch 22 in understanding the human mind. We are trying to understand something by using the very same thing to understand it.

And by your past attitudes about women you made it easy to assume your attitude about this study.  You didn't post this article in a vacuum.

Also, you need to understand that OFTEN comments like: "according to the authors of a paper due to be published in the British Journal of Psychology."  are efforts on the parts of the people who conducted the study to give media attention to a study that doesn't end up being published after all.  Do you know if this study was actually published after all?

I personally do not know if there is a peer review process in psychology and I do not know if the "British Journal of Psychology" is an actual scientific journal or not.

I am not familiar with it as a science for the reasons I stated before.

I agree, Pen...it truly is a subject "art".  One psychologist can see something entirely different than another, whereas, labs are labs...and results are pretty much objective.

Debating Among Different Religious Beliefs

Just a question what would you say to a christen who is married to a pagan and lives happily and raise two children so far and plan to have more.  would you say that the christen is not a christen (by the way my hubby was chaplin asst for the longest time in the army) and that there is something wronge with my family??

Thought i'd jump in hope you don't mind!  I'm a Christian(used to be pagan) and my Best Friend is still pagan. She's engaged to a Christian and planning their (very unique wedding). She has two children 16 and 11 The oldest boy is Mormon (like his dad) and her youngest boy accepted Christ at her fiance's church last summer. I would say the fiance's a Christian. It was his personal commitment to Christ (for him)

As to is anything wrong w/ your family- are you happy? Are your religious differences causing problems?  There is a warning against being unequally yoked in the Bible(and some feel this refers to religion) but things happen make the best of it. If you're happy great!

Elffie...I am a Bible believing Christian, though I do not believe in the literal truth...I talk in church (all the time) I have no desire to take up snakes or drink poison...though I have snorted poison (JK)...

I know you don't need me to explain myself...but I am a Christian who would feel great peace if you lived next door to me :o)

We had an awesome homily today...and it totally moved me...as it truly was about the very essence of Christianity...

Love God with all you've got...and your neighbor as yourself...Elffie...I already see this in you...

Thank you, Marie.  I think I would like you as my neighbor as well. =)  Actually, I know I would. LOL

Debating Among Different Religious Beliefs

Quote From: julie1418

Cheryl, I do understand that as a Christian who believes in a literal translation of the Bible, Paganism is not a good thing FOR YOU. It goes against YOUR religious beliefs. But that is different than people getting all upset that holidays have Pagan roots, as if Paganism is evil. I'm not upset about Hanukkah even though I'm not Jewish. Are you?

I also read the first commandment a bit differently. I don't think it so much about belonging to the wrong religion. It can be much more subtle than that, and it is something all of us, myself very much included, struggle with. I think we often honor false gods of money, pride, vanity, vengeance, power, etc. I think these "false gods" are much more dangerous than worshiping the beauty of God's creations. And they are much more insidious as we can easily convince ourselves that we are Christians and obeying the commandments, when in actuality, we are failing to examine our own souls and our own behaviors.

My thought go deeper than I have the words for at present. I may come back to this. Maybe you can provoke me a bit - smile.

Excellent post, Julie.

I'm looking forward to reading your other thoughts on this. =)

We are happy and my hubby and I debat our differenves all of the time.  But we are so happy I use to go to church with him and support his faith but when he saw I wasn't happy he said to stay home and believe in my faith.  He still goes and believes what he believes and I believe what I believe.  we are very happy

That's cool, and pretty much what my friend does..although she'd rather come to my church than his LOL!  I guess it' the "No force of religion, unconditional love, priesthood of all believers" thing that makes her comfortable. In the end, we agree on what we agree on, and agree to disagree on the  rest. You can't beat someone into Heaven w/a Bible no matter how hard you try.
