(Original Air Date: 05/08/06) Karen is a stay-at-home mother of five who says her anger is out of control. She fears that if she doesn't get help right now, she'll fly off the deep end and do permanent damage to her children. Cameras placed in her home capture an alarming day in the life of Karen and her kids as she degrades and rages at them, and physically abuses her 10-year-old son, Brandon. Karen's husband, Jim, who says he has no idea what goes on in their home while he's at work, sees the home footage for the first time. What is his reaction? Then, hear from Brandon and his 9-year-old sister, Shayna, who describe what it's like to be a small child on the other side of a mother's intense rage. And, what did they tearfully tell the producers about how their dad disciplines them? Plus, Dr. Phil shows how Karen's 3-year-old twins are coping with their fear. Some viewers have raised questions about whether the Dr. Phil show reported Jim and Karen to the authorities after the taping of this show. Other viewers have expressed surprise that Karen and Jim's children were allowed to go home with them after the show.

Please be assured that immediately following the taping of "A Mother's Rage," the Dr. Phil show did make a report to local child protection authorities. As a mental health professional, Dr. Phil is required by law to make such a report if he has concerns about the safety, welfare or well being of a child. However, Dr. Phil does not himself have the authority to remove children from their parents' home.

Remember that a lot happens after the taping of a show that TV viewers never get to see.  Dr. Phil's staff draws on a vast network of experts and mental health professionals to help Dr. Phil guests. Karen's family is just one of many to have received this assistance.

Thank God this family is getting help

I am writing this as I watch the show......tears streaming down my face and I am nauseated from the grinding in the pit of my stomach.  My heart is crying for these children......and for the mom......I could never imagine losing my cool to he point of abusing and degrading my children....Don't get me wrong.....there is NO EXCUSE for any of her behavior......but as I see the precious faces of my own children, I wonder what could possibly drive me to act so hatefully toward them.....How could I possibly hate my children?   How could anyone?  I do hope that these children are removed from the home or maybe that Mom is removed until she can get control of herself.......the help that she is in desperate need of..... I will certainly be praying for this family.

abusive mom

I am watching the program this very moment and I am more upset than Karen and her husband seem to be. What is wrong with them? I cannot believe that Karen's husband wasn't outraged by what he saw on the tape. He didn't seem too suprised. I am crying for those children. I cannot understand how any parent can do such a thing to their own children. They don't deserve those children, and I think that the "my father hit me as a kid" excuse is a cowards excuse.

05/08 A Mother’s Rage

I am watching the Dr. Phil show right now in complete disbelief.  I have two children of my own and I am disgusted with this mom.  My oldest daughter died almost 2 years ago from Cystic Fibrosis and I saw this show and I just cried.  How can a mother do this to her children?  I would do anything to have both of my children with me.  There are some mothers who can't have their children with them.  This mother doesn't deserve her children!

Call child services

This woman needs serious HELP and these children need to be removed from this home before we have to read about the death of one of these children in the paper. Someone needs to call Child Protective Services.

Remove the kids if she's violent

Quote From: parisfan

haven't seen the show yet but from reading the overveiw i must say I feel awfully sorry for the kids.it sounds like no way to live.

obviously the mum needs a lot of help and I was kind of hating the fact that dr. phil didn't take the kids out for the home for a while and allow a cooling off period and give these kids a chance for normalcy while things are figured out

yeah, i do agree that mental and emotional help is so obviously apparent there but i'd also call for some distance so the mum can like get a better grip on things before she deals with any kid again. and then i'd put the conditon of if she EVER hurt the kids again they'd be removed permanetly from the home

parisfan
I agree that there is never an excuse to take out frustrations on your kids. Your problems are really not their fault. She had 5 kids? Did she ever hear of birth control after the first couple if she could not handle them? By the way, that boy sure could use a good hair cut.

Please Get These Children Away Now!!!!!!

I am a stay-at-home mother as well.  Stress is certainly part of the job.  However, God saw fit to bless me with the opportunity to be the mother of my children.  As such, it is my job to do the absolute, very best job I possible can, to raise them in a nurturing, loving, supportive environment, to be the very best people they can become.  Otherwise, how will they reach their ultimate and divine destiny, that was planned for them, even before they were born.  I can no longer fight back the tears from watching this.  Please, Dr. Phil, get these children away from these monsters right now!!!!!!!!!!!!  Please don't believe them.  Not even the father....he keeps a stick, for the sole purpose of beating those children.  I know this didn't just tape.  However, I beg you to get those children out of that situation immediately.

I don't know where these monsters are from, but if anyone on the message boards know them, please turn them in now!!!!!!

Don't know what the woman's problem is

Quote From: boldmamma

You have got to be kidding me. Previous messages were corrected, these two MONSTERS have no right to call themselves parents, nor should they have the right to have these children in their lives. My children are 21 and 19 and they have NEVER been slapped or hit in any manner at all, no matter what they did or at what age they did it. I would like 5 minutes with them both to kick the crap out of them and see how it feels for them to have someone slapping them.. These two must of been abused as children to feel it is acceptable to do this to a child. Having a child is a gift you have been given, not a right to abuse. It's like a marriage vow, you should love honor and cherish your children for the rest of thiers and your life. Dr. Phil kick thier butts today on the show, I know your just as mortified as US real parents are.
I was physically abused the first seven years of my life by my mother. I am 36 yrs old, vowed never to put my children through the pain I went through. Alot of people use childhood abuse as an excuse or a crutch. I am determined to live my life as normal as possible. I never slapped or hit my kids, though that punishment was the norm in my family. My Dad though he divorced mom and took custody, he still slapped us in the head. This is WRONG!

will Jim & Karen get help? I DON'T THINK SO!

I am SO UPSET THAT THESE KIDS ARE NOT IN A SAFE HOME. ANY OTHER CHILDREN WOULD BE PUT INTO A FOSTER HOME, BUT THESE PEOPLE ARE ALLOWED TO GO HOME, GET UPSET OVER WHAT THEIR KIDS SAID ABOUT THEM ON TV, AND BEAT THEM TO WITHIN AN INCH OF THEIR LIVES AGAIN?!

Also, it doesn't matter how Karen, or Jim, were treated when they were little. They are adults, and if they think what they are doing is right, they need to come see me! As a parent who was abused violently as a child, I can honestly say that I have NEVER beaten my child, nor does he fear me. People like Jim and Karen should NOT be allowed to have children in their presence for ANY length of time, as people like them do NOT change. I cry for those children. It will be hard for me to sleep at night knowing that they have 2 violent people who can and will hurt them whenever they feel like it, and don't have to answer to anyone..........
