Tattoos

I think that Dr Phil was very harsh towards the girl today. More and more people are getting them, and it isn't such a taboo today than in the past.

I am 26 years old and I have 2 tattoos around the ankles. I honestly plan to get more.  None of the girl on the show's tattoos look like they'd be hard to cover up. I've always picked locations, where, if needed I could cover them up easily during certain situations.

Also, my boyfriend has 9 tattoos. He plans to get more. He works as an EMT, and always has them covered during work. I do not see a problem with tattooing, since it is a personal choice. His tattoos, with the exception of 1 were done prior to me dating him, and I don't have a problem with any of them, despite the fact 1 is a little racy.

Do I think that either myself or my boyfriend will regret our tattoos?? No, since they have meaning behind them and think it out before getting any.

And, as far as her mother's concern about picking up a disease, yes, there is a risk, but most tattoo palors are clean and would answer any health questions the client is concerned about.  Again, I think at age 19, her mother should not be concerned with her daughter's choices, since I do believe that she thought out these tattoos and the ramifications before getting them. And the age progression, she right. She could wear a sweater, since I've never seen a grandmom wear anything that baring.

My tatoos

I have 3 tats, and most of the time nobody knows I have them .  When I decided to get my first one, I took 5 years to think what I wanted and where to put it.   I  realized  that there are times when it is not in my best interest for them to show.  That played a big role on my decision of where to put them.  I now have 3 and the only time they are outwardly  visable is when I wear  shorts or my  swimsuit.

05/29 Parenting Dilemmas

Quote From: miketina

I think maybe a small tatoo out of sight would be ok, but I think tatoos are very ugly. People can do what they want, but I have a right to what I like also. If a boss is hiring someone I am sure he wont hire someone that stinks and is dirty. Impressions are made very quickly. He has a right to not hire that person. I think some things are just universally ugly. Tatoos, body odor, yellow teeth. People are people.

If the tattoos are covered, even if the person has a full body suit, how could someone discriminate against that person? I'm sure there are people in your work place who have tattoos and you don't know it, since they are covered.

people that  like  the punk look, makes them look so ugly and nasty!    wearing nothing but black all the time  makes people look like the dead or halloween.   looks like they should be in a horror movie!!!  ya people change but  not to try and look ugly. like return  of the dead!!!   its makes  people look like devil  worshiperers!  evil!
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.  Honestly.  What one person thinks is beautiful may be disgusting to someone else.

You can believe what you will, but do not dispute others vision of beauty.  You're not the authority on what is pretty or not.

Help your children make good decisions that affect their future

Quote From: bunneymate

I was 22 when I purchased my first tattoo.  I have since purchased 3 more, and I wouldn't touch any of them.  I am now 30, nearing 31, and I have had employment positions in professional fields where I did not hide my tattoo (the one that does show).  I rarely hide it, actually.  While I am certainly not the same person I was when I was 22, my tattoos remind me of the things I went through, the obstacles I overcame, and how I overcame them, while on my road to 30 and beyond.  This girl who was on the show today may experience the same thing.  Who knows.

I didn't see her attitude as "rebellious" or antisocial; I have the same attitude.  I do not tolerate people who will judge me, whether they're employers, prospective friends, or family.  I do not tolerate people who will judge anyone for any reason based on appearance.  I don't think my attitude is rebellious; I believe my attitude is humanitarian.  If you take a look at someone and decide what they're like based on appearance, tattoos, clothes, skin color, or otherwise, then YOU have something wrong with YOU.

My son who is now 23 has wanted to get a tatoo for years.  I really hate tattoos and find them ugly and low class, however now that he is an adult, of course he can do what he wants.  I do implore parents to help set limits for their children because as we all know (as adults) our beliefs, perspectives and decisions at a young age are not those that we maintain as we grow older and hopefully wiser.  Because a tatoo is such a permanent expression of a point in time, I believe it is better to avoid making such a long term decision until later in life.  The way I delayed my son's tatoo for years was to tell him that if he is able to afford to spend money on a tatoo, then he doesn't need my support for his college education, living expenses or other ways that I financially support him.  He needs to be spending his money on things that positively impact his future - not wasting it on a trendy tatoo.  I was fully prepared to end my support of him if he chose to spend hundreds of dollars on a tatoo.  He did choose to get his ears pierced (at one point with a wide guage) and bleach and color his hair.  As another poster mentioned, these are temporary expressions and can be changed - they are not permanent like a tatoo.  I love my son and want the best for him, and if he now chooses to get that tatoo he's been wanting, he can take some of his college graduation money and do that.  I just hope he decides to put it somewhere that can easily be covered - he is considering law school or politics and I wonder how his clients or constituents would feel about it?  To the poster above - it's naive to think that people aren't judged on their appearance - why do you think the diet, cosmetic, anti-aging and clothing industries are worth billions?  We don't even elect politicians anymore who aren't attractive and look good on television, regardless of how humanitarian they are.  As a society we make quick decisions about people and judge them based on their appearance - every study I've read proves that.  Even ancient civilizations and third world countries judge their members based on appearance - it is part of being human.

Tatoos aren't so BAD!!

When I was 19, I got my first tatoo. I was vey much single and a mother of a 2 yr. old. My tatoo best describes me(dolphin). I don't regret having such a beautiful tatoo. I liked it some such, I went and got another one to represent my oldest daughter. About one year later I went and got my last tatoo.  There is nothing wrong with tatoos if you find one(s) that best represent you. I got my tatoos where they can be easily covered.  I'm proud to have them and my kids and husband also like them. I know lots of people with tatoos, and they are friendly people. I think people should be more respectful towards eachother,TATOO(S) or NO TATOOS! We are the same in the inside, so what is the big deal???? If you were in an emerengcy and needed help, would you stop to ask if that person(any occupation) if they had any tatoos? THINK ABOUT IT! DOES IT REALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

Your daughter is still the same person just packaged differently.  If I were to instantly judge Cindi, the mom, I could think that you are a bleached blonde and we all know what that means!   Ok, that statement was inane as instantlym judging your daughter because she has tattoos.  The daughter seems to have her head together.  And hey, Dr. Phil, why wheren't you more supportive of the daughter's  choices?

Love My Tattoos

I got my first tattoo when I came home from college along with my first motorcycle.  I come from a  household where things like this were not permited.  It was the most fun I had.  I have added more tattoos over the years, and have never regreted having any of them.  I still wear dresses that show the ones on my back and for work, I wear shorts all day, which shows the tattoo on my ankle, which I have received a lot of compliments on, from the public time and time again. I have a total of 12 tattoos in different areas of my body.
I also have 8 earrings in my left ear and 3 in my right.  When I am interviewing for any job, I take out most of the earrings and cover the tattoos so my furture position is not influenced by my art work or piercings.  I am also a competive power lifter, so my size already intimidates people even when I dress professionlly.  A lot of people are not used to women that are physicaly strong and likes different tastes then the norm.
So I see no reason why a person should not have a tattoo or two as long as the person understands it will be there for a very long time!!!
