Obesity is a medical disorder that can be treated, but sometimes society doesn't look upon the obese with compassion. Find support and understanding here as you or those you love cope with obesity.

You can have friends too

Quote From: lonalea200

I wish people knew what it was like to be obese.  That is it...I am fat. I don't know why my body insists on eating.  My stomach doesn't say "hungry". It is my taste buds that scream " Food" !  So I feel that I am eating for mental reasons rather than physicall hunger.  What do we do? It is a constant battle. We eat because we are fat and people make fun of us which makes you more hungry and depressed.  I don't just sit down and pig out on a box of donuts everymorning. Matter of fact..I am a diabetic because of my weight.  I very rarely eat a candy bar, but when I buy one, I feel like the whole world is watching and thinking, "That fat person is eating Candy !!!". the guilt is so strong.  I can't enjoy a good treat without thinking.   I know that I shouldn't care about what people think, but you know what....I do. I want people to like me. I want to have friends.  When you must go a life of ridicule and no friends, ( true friends),  you see how important it is to have a friend.   I am a good person.   I wish people knew what it was like to have people pay more attention to weight than who you are. I have yet to find someone to agree. Maybe I am wrong, but I think not. Everybody needs a friend. I just don't have one.
They say the best way to have a friend is to be one. I'd like to invite you to come and be a friend to our group here on the Dr. Phil message boards--there's a special board called 200 pounds or more to lose. But we also have a few people with a little less than 200 lb. to lose. Yes, we are obese, but we are helping one another to get healthy. Many of our members are diabetic or insulin resistant. We are all good people and caring. You won't find criticism there--just loving, caring help from friends who are in the same boat. I hope you'll look us up and join our little group. Together we are doing it!! And we all need more friends, so won't you please come and help us too?

i am post gastric bypass i once weighed 350 i am now down to 172 i have been fighting obesity sonce a young child. i have some to terms that its not just weight it is an addictsion. i was and still am addicted to food, even though i had gastric bypass i still think of food constantly. i feel that a support person/group an dprofessional help is much neeed in my situation and think some others coul dbenefit from it. the reson im posting this is because i feel that when you los the weight no matter whater what it will always be a battle and you need some kind of support system in place. just my input....

I have 140 pounds to lose and will be going to an educational meeting this evening for the gastric bypass.  I know it is what I want to do it is just a matter of getting an insurance company that will pay for it.  My husband feels I would be much like you with the surgery and I tend to agree, but I have to start somewhere and losing the weight is a great way to strat.  I have been advised by friends who have had the surgery that going to the support groups is a must.  How long has it been since you had your surgery?

Group

I'm in South Africa and eventually envy you guys for supporting each other. I NEED the Ultimate Weight Loss book by Dr Phil but can't find it anywhere here. I've very low self-esteem, I don't socialise because of my obesity. People often stare at me, I once went to a friend's party everyone was happy dancing instead I was sitting on the corner hiding myself in baggy clothes. We're about to go to our school reunion in 2006 I don't think that I will because I didn't get a chance to attend my PROM night as my mother couldn't afford to buy me that DRESS so I stayed at home instead. The reunion will be my last chance to wear it but not in this body. It's killing me. I wish somebody could help me not to give up.

Keep up on supporting each other.

wanting to lose weight!

Hi everyone,  Maybe someone out there can inspire me a little to start losing weight! I would love to be a part of Dr Phils weight loss challenge and bet I could really give some of them a run for their money, but it is very difficult trying to lose weight on your own - so a little advice would be great.  My husband also needs to lose weight, but he looooves his food!  My baby is 9 and a half months old and while I was pregnant with her I went to gym and ate healthy food, but now just munch on anything I can get my paws on!  I now weigh 95kg's!

First of all, get the Ultimate Weight Solution book and read it, then read it again and again and again. And when you hit a plateau or stumbling block along the way, read it again. Also, there are many message boards where people can get support from others who have something in common with you--maybe those who need to lose the same amount, maybe people your age, maybe mothers of young children. Go exploring on this website and find a few groups to explore. Post a message and read what's been posted before until you find one you are comfortable with. That support is vital as you progress on the WLC. It's not necessary to be on the TV program to lose weight--thousands of people all over the world are losing and forming support groups. Your group will give you more great ideas, but those are the starting points I strongly recommend. Good luck on your journey.

Hay Rarybaby - I am in South Africa too !! What great news.  I have a copy of the Ultimate Weight Solution book  (even better news!) - which after searching for months, my Dad managed find for me. I am going to start reading it tonight! Where about in SA are you?  How about we support each other!?  Can't "Weight" for your reply! Maybe you will fit into that dress after all!!

The UWS book

I'm confused--why is the UWS book so hard to get in SA if it's available here online? Will the Dr. Phil people not ship to SA? I thought everything online was EASY to order no matter where you live.

Anyway, I'm happy you were able to get a copy and I hope Rarybaby can get one too--it is the key to permanent weight loss, we all are learning it's not just about the food, eh?

I do have a word of caution for you though. It's great to have an e-mail buddy or even face-to-face buddy to make the journey with, but I also strongly recommend getting involved in one of the message board support groups. The buddy you have may not stay on the program as long as you need to (or vice versa) and if you've focused all your support needs on that person, where is your support then? But the message boards are there for you 24/7 and even though some people drift in and out of being active on any particular board, the basic group is still always there for you. So please do both--there are message boards based on age, lifestyle, amount you want to lose, etc. So browse the list and try several--after a few days you'll find one or two that "feel" right. So then just post regularly after that and you'll find the support you need.

Good luck on your journey,

Cherie
