Breaking Unhealthy Habits

Quote From: hardheaded32

Getting of soft drinks that are not diet is I believe one of the best habits to break, it helps you lose the weight really quick.  I think it gives us a good jump start!!  Now if I could just break the chips habit that would be wonderful lol!

switch to the light chips. They are good, and the have a lot less calories. Also if you weigh the 1 ounce ahead of time, and only get that much out it is easier to stop. Jennifer

oh! how i miss the caffine.ive given it up now for ,i think about 8 weeks now.it was hard to give up but once you hit the first week you realise how toxic caffine is to your body,i cant believe how it scattered my mind.the next thing for me is the smokes, havnt started that yet? i think you need to have a action plan for that one as my smoke is my best friend,he is there through thick and thin,so im not sure how to tackle that one.i wish we could just take a tablet  for the smokes, but un fortunatly they dont have a miricle cure.i often wonder, they can put man on the moon.....but they cant invent a tablet that makes me give the fags up????oh well when i take that  step i will let you know how and what im doing to give them up,but dont hold ya breath waiting for me as i think this is the hardest thing i will face and i too would love to hear from anyone who gave the smokes up??????

I was up to 224+ and trying to get over a bad 5 year relationship.  I have bad asthma which was worsened (?) when my weight accelerated.  I had a Gastric Bypass which was alot cheaper than me going to the ER or DR every other day.

i feel much better now, but I now have other issues.  I have recently gained weight after loosing my Mother this April, and my Dad 2 years ago.

I guess my problem is different than yours, I find comfort in Alcohol.  I know this is not good for me, I have recently started a diet.  I have given myself until  April or May to loose 30 lbs.

Both of my girls are in College, and working.  They are both out of the house also, I am very proud of them.  A few years ago they told me they were not imberassed by my weight, since I had lost it.   I do not want to imberass them again... so, maybe we can help each other.

If you loose this.  my e-mail is justshandamom@yahoo.com.

I eat good, go to the gym about 2-4 times a week... I need to go 4-6 times a week.  No reason I do not.  Just lazy.  Buy, maybe between the two of us we can weight ourselves every two weeks and loose weight together???

suggestion - see your MD for craving control

There are meds available to control cravings and weight gain following discontinuation of smoking - medicines containing Wellbutrin.  They seem to help regulate dopamine response,   a brain chemical involved in habit- forming behavior.  (The medicine in Wellbutrin and similar medicines is not the same as a nicotine patch.)  Bovioulsy controlling the craving and the tendency to gain weight makes dropping a bad habit less of an ordeal.

Of your two habits, smoking is by far the worst.  Coffee drinking is  even thought to have some health benefits, and it's main "badness" is the way you have linked it to a really destructive, nasty habit of smoking.   Perhaps if you keep drinking coffee, you will always want the cigarette you smoked while drinking the coffee.

Both caffeine and  the stimulants in tobacco control calorie expenditure.  They do not directly keep you from losing weight, and you may gain more weight if you stop them without changing other habits ( improving diet and adding excercise).  However, the medicines I mentioned have been shown to help those quitting smoking to keep weight off or even drop a few pounds instead of gaining weight, as is more typical.

Stopping smoking without weight gain

I have started on a new med. to help stop smoking but I have had two back surgeries and I am on numerous medications for pain (which only makes it tolerable) and because of the pain, I am limited to the types of exercise I can do. I am already approx. 30 pounds overweight and horrified of gaining more weight when the smoking stops. My mom is obese and I don't think I could live that way The continous back pain is stressful enough. I would love to hear from anyone with suggestions. vikki3558@yahoo.com, Thanks for any advice.

What new medicine are you taking?  If it is the brand name Zyban,r a kind of bupropion ( same medicine as in the anti-depressant brand name Wellbutrin) this is the medicine I mentioned below.

It has been shown to help users keep off weight or even drop weight after quitting smoking.  It reduces cravings, and makes it much easier to begin to break a long habit.

Walking at any time..indoors

I'm new to this.  It's my first message.  I went to a "cholesterol lowering class" at our local hospital three weeks ago.  My triglycerides are too high.  I need to walk.  I live thirty miles from a  very small town in the woods. I just hate getting dressed to go outside and walk up the road then back.  During bear seasons, I just won't.  I'm scared of bears.  Well, I discovered (drum roll)  walking in place.  You don't need a treadmill.  I always used the excuse that I needed one to walk indoors..  Nope.  Today I was watching Dr. Phil on TIVO and did an hour walk.  I walk briskly, move my arms and if music comes on, I change to dancing.  It works..  I won't go out to walk, but now I have no excuse.  I've walked nine days out of the last twelve.  I love to watch TV and now I can just jump up and do my walk.  I feel so much better.  I was having a hard time remembering to do it so one of the people at the Cholesterol class said she'd call me every day but Sunday.  So she gives me a "walk up call"  just before she goes out to  walk her dog.  I don't need the reminder anymore..well, it is very encouraging.  A buddy is always a good thing.

Well, try walking in place while you watch the tube.  It's just as good.  If someone tells you that you should just go outside to walk, tell them that if you'll walk in place but you won't go out to do it, then obviously in place will be for you.  Good luck... now stand up and walk with me.

This is so true, Do you know me????

Quote From: ritehere

I was cleaning out my bookshelves this past weekend and found this. It used to hang on my refrigerator and I would read it before I opened the door. Hope somebody finds it as helpful as I did.

I overate for happiness - and became unhappy.
I overate for joy - and became miserable.
I overate to be outgoing - and became self-centered.
I overate to be sociable - and became argumentative and lonely.
I overate for friendship - and made enemies.
I overate to soften sorrow - and awakened without rest.

I overate for strength - and felt weak.
I overate for relaxation - and became more tense.
I overate for assurance - and became doubtful.
I overate for warmth - and lost my cool.
I overate to feel Heavenly - and found Hell.
I overate to forget - and became haunted by my excess fat.
I overate for freedom - and became a slave to food.

I overate for power - and became powerless.
I overate to erase problems - and saw them multiply.
I overate to cope with life - and invited an earlier death.

I overate because I had the RIGHT - and everything turned out wrong.

So I made it a rule, I don't eat unless I'm truly hungry!

My gosh this hits every nail on the head.  I did not know just how much over eating was a habit.  I came home from the hospital in 1999, I had a Gastric Bypass and was not feeling too good.  But, While watching TV is never noticed how good food looked, and I was Hungry!  Why??  My stomache was shrunk down to nothing at that time.  I stopped and thought, wow the mind is a powerful toy...(tool)  and it truly had me under a spell, or bad habbit.   you have probly listed everyone and any I might think of?    Now I have gained 50 # this year and my asthma and depression are taking over AGAIN

 Thank you!!
