A staple of any weight loss plan is moderate daily exercise. Pilates, yoga, and aerobics are hugely popular, along with good old-fashioned walking! What exercises do you find most effective? Share your routine with us!

any advice on finding time for fitness with 2 kids?

I am going to have my second child any day now, and my first is 4 and a half. I am not extremely overweight, 20 pounds or so, pre pregnancy. My whole family has weight problems, and I am the only one that weighs under 200 pounds. My mom had gastric bypass to help. I really don't want to end up in that boat. I know eating well is important, but so is exercise. I want to know what is the best way to do it with 2 young children. My boyfriend is away a lot because of his job, so it is me and the kid(s). I like to ride my bike, but that is out. Walking is good, but pointless if you are walking child speed. Should I buy arobics tapes or something? So far that sounds like the best idea.

Exercise

Hello and welcome.  Join the rest of us reaching toward a healthier and happier tomorrow.  Should you join?  Not necessarily.  I had a treadmill and used it all the time til it broke beyond repair.  currently I live in a tiny trailer with no room for exercise equipment. so, I did join Curves.  If you find that you need outside motivation, then joining a gym might not be a bad idea.  The key - find something you like and can stick with. Jewels

HI,

Glad to write.  I had knee replacement when I was 28 years old.  It's not easy but with physical therapy my knee became better than my real knee.  Now that I am over 50 I have put on a few extra pounds  to be exact 35 pounds.  I have lost 10.  I joined Curves but I found that the workout was not hard enough. So I began a exercise program at home.  I purchased some weights and a tape.  I also drink alot of water and I write everything that I eat down.  This way I can see what I am eating.

Hope this helps you

Hello!  I can feel your pain.  I am a single mother with one child, and working full-time.  It can be very challenging to find time to exercise.  My motive is it's better to do a little than none at all.  Do you have a stroller both of your children can fit into?  If so, take a walk with both of them in the stroller.  Even if you can't walk fast, you'll burn more by pushing the weight of the stroller.

Perhaps there's a family member, neighbor or friend who will watch the children 3-4 times a week for you, just for 30-45 minutes so you can take a brisk walk by yourself??  Maybe get a carrier you can strap on  to yourself for the baby, and let your 4 1/2 yr old walk or ride a bike.  Even if you go slow, every little bit helps.

If I'm tied up at home with cleaning, laundry, etc, I'll run up and down the steps extra (sounds a little silly, I know), but it works.  Or, just do jumping jacks or jog in place while the kids watch TV, or have your 4 1/2 yr old do them with you.

On days I cannot get to the gym, my goal is to do an extra 20-30 minutes of ANYTHING to stay active.  Just remember you don't have to do anything formal - just keep moving!

Good luck!

I think a good thing to do would be to try something really wacky and fun.  Take a bellydance class, maybe a martial arts class, learn to juggle, try jogging behind someone really attractive LOL.

I went to a middle eastern dance class about nine years ago with some friends and I've been hooked ever since!  You just never know what kind of cool fun stuff there is out there.

This seems to be the dilemma for most people trying to lose weight, finding the time in their already busy lives to work out regularly. And when they carve out the needed time, to actually do the work outs and not fall prey to the "shoulds". (I should be sweeping the floor, washing something, etc.)
I attended a hypnotherapy class and it helped with the "shoulds" tremendously! It helped me to get clarity on what was important to ME and MY FUTURE. Yes, a clean house is important, but it will wait for you. Your health is a much more fragile thing and much more important in the long run.
To carve out time, I decided that nothing I put on my face or fingernails, or how I arranged my hair looked better than a slim toned body. I cut back drastically on my make-up and hair time (it was very hard at first!) but it was worth it. The time I spent on that daily, and some other things, was traded for time on the treadmill, weights and stretches. And here too, the hypnotherapy helped, because I remembered how much I loved MOVEMENT as a child, and it all came back.

When I started menapause I  started gaining weight and now I'm about 50 pounds over weight. Please help me to loss but help him gain.

Are you sure the weight gain wasn't due to an emotional reaction to the stress of your fiance's cancer? And when you quit smoking you did away with your number one stress coping behavior. I think you should get Dr Phil's weight loss book. It's not the only one that helps with the reasons why we overeat, but it's the most comprehensive one I've found.
As far as the discrepancies over your problems, I would make healthy meals, eat the same foods, but give him bigger portions and more starches that you eat.
