Dr. Phil continues his tour of New Orleans one year after Hurricane Katrina. He gets a progress report from New Orleans’ mayor, Ray Nagin. Then, Dr. Phil checks in with former police chief, Eddie Compass, in the same spot he comforted him a year ago. What has Compass been doing since he left the force? And was he fired from his job by the mayor? Dr. Phil gets to the bottom of the controversy. Who’s telling the truth? Then, Dr. Phil takes a look at the award-winning photographs of David Woo. His book, Eyes of the Storm, captures the devastated ghost town that was New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Share your thoughts, join the discussion.

You Are Nuts ----- > lol

Quote From: deja126

I have watched so many shows about Katrina and all the people suffering, it makes me mad and sad. I'm mad at Bush because he promised so much and gave so little, I'm sad to see how these people are living when they don't have to live this way if the government would get off their asses and help. I was thinking if everyone who could afford to, pick 1 family and send them money once a month until they get back on their feet, even $100.00, I think it would help them buy things they need and take some of the stress off. I know alot of you reading this think I'm nuts for sugesting  we do this but if we don't then who will. I know I would love to recieve help if I was in their shoes. The kids need school supplies and clothes . I'm not even from the states but my heart breaks for all of them and I can afford to helpif I could figure out  away to reach them one on one. I don't want to sen money to Res Cross or Salvation Army because I want to know the money I send goes directly into the familys pocket for things they need.

If anyone has any input to add, please do I need some advice on how to do this.

Did I hear you right?

These days the working people are having trouble just buying food, gas, and Floridians are being forced to sell and move because insurance companies canceled them, and in many cases declined claims and passed them off as flood instead of wind damage. Home owners has gone up 200 to 300 %. Yes, you read that right and it's not a typo error. Everyone has reached hard times. Many many people donated. I sent gift packages for kids with a company from Tampa, that contained an array of things from toothbrushes, toothpaste, crayons color books, playdough etc, just to help them thru that crazyness. Not much but I'm sure they enjoyed it.

Yes the kids needs help, but what is insure any will go to school supplies. Only 29% have returned to school.

Ain't that the doggone truth!

Quote From: sunflagal4

Nagin should have paid attention to Gov Bush and the success Florida has had with it's hurricanes. Florida is the most prepared and the most experienced. Jeb Bush has always been there and  has made discisons and taken action way before the storms approched..

I sometimes wonder if Jeb is even related to the Bush family.

Dr. Phil Relief

I am a Katrina survivor still fighting with FEMA to receive property damage.  FEMA alleges I did not lose enough (only everything I had ever worked for) and has awarded me $0.00 for property damage.  I was promised a one year rental agreement and that was cut short too.  I find it amazing that our country's Federal Emergency team won't help its own people.  I am very thankful for the Eddie Compass story and hope the horrible truth about Mayor Nagin finally comes out!  When I watch the other people from New Orleans, I realize I am not alone.  I managed to move on and graduate from college in May, 2006.  I am now working on a Master's degree just to occupy my mind.  I hope if any of the FEMA employees ever go through a natural disaster, somebody treats them the way people from the Mississippi Coast and Louisiana have been treated.  Amen for people like Dr. Phil!!!

A DISGRACE to New Orleans

It's a shame that New Orleans has a leader that can't tell the truth, who makes racists statements and who's such a camera junkie that he felt a need to force out a man who's performed his job as Police Chief  to the best of his abilities, with what he had at the time. This "leader" isnt' HALF the man the Police Chief  is....and will never be, not EVEN on his best day.

New Orleans should have written OFF this "leader" on the ballot and wrote in Eddie Compass's name.

This "leader" fired the Police Chief and can't even admit to that ,let alone admit to the country what a  100% FAILURE he is at the job of running the city. He plays the blame game. Blame everyone and anyone as long as it isnt' HIM. The Govenor, The President, FEMA, THE Police Chief....everyone but himself.

New Orleans will NEVER recover from Katrina as long as this man is in office. And being they went and re-elected him.......it may be a while.

Keep New Orleans "chocolate".....words spoken by a racists man who's bringing the city down.

This is a man who's alienated just about anyone who was in a position to help him rebuild

the city......and now he's gotten on the Dr. Phil show, lied, and got caught.

To Mr. Compass......never be sorry for showing a human side. Never be sorry for trying to do the job

you we're hired to do. And if I we're you.....when election time rolls around, consider running for MAYOR. What a glorious thing it would be to watch you WIN. Maybe then New Orleans and her citizens can recover and move forward verses treading water.

God Bless America, God Bless our Troops!

I Agree

Quote From: mssylady1

It is never too late to help.  I too do not agree to send money to the Red Cross or other governmental agencies.  I have my reasons.  If you or anyone plan on a vacation, go to New Orleans, find a family who need help and purchase things they can use, eg. clothing, food, make arrangements with someone to facililate their living situation.
I agree! How can we ever call ourselves a real leader without first putting human life before the book! It appears to me that Mayor Nagin was more concerned with his job and doing things by the book! A ture leader is not afriaid to take charge even if it means standing alone. All past great leaders put people first before themselves, that was their job!!!! What is the worst that could have happened? Perhaps if they had used the public service transportation system to evacuate the citzens of N.O. they would owe money to the drivers and gas. Wow what a bill !!! They owe a lot of other people for nonsense, but lives would have been saved!

Todays show

I just watched today's show and all I can say is that Eddie Compass did a wonderful job when HK hit. The poor man worked 24/7...and Ray Nagin has the gall to say he was on drugs?? Unbelievable!   Ray Nagin looked like he didn't miss any sleep, he always looked bright eyed and bushy tail! I think what he did to EC is horrible and just plain unforgivable, cheating him out of his pension.   RN should give him his job back, if he'll take it, which I doubt. But then seeing EC addressing RN at the end of your show he acted like he might have taken his old job back, holding no grudges, kind of looked desperate to me, maybe not. I hope not. But I think he's a prince of a man!   EC should get himself a darn good lawyer and sue!   I'm not one to judge people but today's show really rubbed me the wrong way... so sorry if I went on and on. :)

New Orleans folks got what they asked for

Let me make this simple... the people of New Orleans feel forgotten and discarded.  And then they sent the people in the rest of the country a clear message:  They re-elected Ray Nagin.  This is a man who was presiding over a completely corrupt system of goverment, & who has since Katrina, proven himself to be a complete buffoon in the public eye, who has done nothing in the media but alienate his city by his ineptitude and crass remarks.... And the people of New Orleans re-elected him to be their leader.  So they get exactly what they deserve from the rest of us.  __________

The other huge issue is that the people of the United States are, thank God, smart enough not to want to help a very corrupt and poorly run city rebuild in a flood plain.  Why in the world would I want my efforts or my tax dollars sent to rebuild a city  that should not have been built there in the first place, and to rebuild a city a who re-elected for itself easily the most corrupt and inept government in the Unites States????  No way.

The New Orleans Mayor

Quote From: sunflagal4

Can you believe they elected him again? What is wrong with those people?

After the 911 comment he made ( the I'm sorry didn't cut it ), he is not fit to be in office

PW

The Mayor won by less than 200 votes.  The only reason he won was because he had he buddies drive residents in from places like Houston (to vote);  his people paid the homeless New Orleans residents to vote for him (he made promises; they believed him); this is why he won.  I live in Monroe, Louisiana and visit the City often (I have friends who own a second home in the French Quarters; being a small State, it's easy to keep up the politics and gossip).  The Mayor owes the former Police Chief $300,000 or a job and much more.  He was a lousy mayor before Katrina; he fired the Police Chief he was well liked and doing a better job than the mayor was;  the State was asking the mayor questions he couldn't answer; he couldn't handle the job; he still can't handle the job.  He lied to Dr. Phil today (on the program); the former Police Chief was a class act; he could have exposed the mayor for what he is, but he is a good person and loves God and his family and New Orleans and Louisiana too much to expose the mayor's lies and bad deeds.  Please keep New Orleans and Louisiana in your prayers and please do not forget the people of New Orleans; they will need our help for a long time.  Thank you!

Ray Nagon lies

Once again a politician has proved himself to be a liar.  Ray Nagon (Mayor of New Orleans) says that he did not fire the chief of police shortly after Katrina devastated that city.  However, upon further scrutiny we discover an email that was sent to Chief Eddy Compas saying he should plan a 60 to 90 day exit strategy (Political speak for you are fired).  I wish it were in my power to appoint this man of honor and courage to our local police force.  I believe Eddy Compas to be an extraordinary public servant after seeing the interview Dr Phil did with him on today's show.  I wish I knew of a way I could help him directly.

Sincerely

08/29 Hurricane Katrina: One Year Later, Part 2

Mayor Naggin completely dropped the ball on Katrina!  The Hurricane Center tried repeatidly 5 days before Katrina hit to get a hold of him, and he would not return their calls.  The Center finally called the President who then called Naggin to warn him to call for a mandatory evacuation.  Naggin then waited 2 more days to decide whether or not to evacuate the elderly and the sick.  And we all know how that ended.  19 hours before it hit he rounded up the people who stayed and piled them into the SuperDome.  FEMA told Naggin that it would be about 3 days before they could help, which in other cities worked out fine.  What about the thousand busses that were just sitting there?  What about Naggin doing his job and calling the Gov. to bring in the National Guard??  That is NOT the President's job.  That is the state's responsability.  But you bring any of this up to Naggin, and he says that now is not the time to point fingers and place blame.  Forgive me mayor, but isn't that what you have been doing from the beginning?  I can't believe they voted this idiot in again!!
