Dr. Phil continues his tour of New Orleans one year after Hurricane Katrina. He gets a progress report from New Orleans’ mayor, Ray Nagin. Then, Dr. Phil checks in with former police chief, Eddie Compass, in the same spot he comforted him a year ago. What has Compass been doing since he left the force? And was he fired from his job by the mayor? Dr. Phil gets to the bottom of the controversy. Who’s telling the truth? Then, Dr. Phil takes a look at the award-winning photographs of David Woo. His book, Eyes of the Storm, captures the devastated ghost town that was New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Share your thoughts, join the discussion.

Eddie

  Dear Dr. Phil:

I think it is absoutely outrageous, for the Mayor of New Orleons, to be upset with Eddie, for being emotional on your show and crying over the death of a police officer!!! How can anybody judge, what this poor man has had to go through, dealing with the results of Hurricane Katrina. I'm sure anyone who has to go without sleep, due to their jobs, will understand just how hurtfull the coments about his "red eye's" are  so hurtful. The nerve of some people, to even suggest that this man had been drinking, or doing drugs, is tatally out of line! I hope that most people out there, will have some empathy for what Eddie has had, and will have to deal with, from Hurricane Katrina!

In closing

Thanks for bringing this to light. When Eddie compass resigned I thought that Mayor Nagin was behind it. How come this stutting peacock has never been held accountable?

1. He fired the chief of police for doing a good job.

2. He forgot to arrange for the bus drivers for all those buses we saw under water.

3. an Amtrak official called his office and offered an empty train to go to New Orleans before Katrina and he was refused.

4. New Orleans received federal money, before all this, to hire additional police. He didn't hire any then to cover-up he claimed that the police had deserted their posts. Asked by a reporter "what happened to the money?" he stated that he spend it to pretend that the police were on the job...the phanthom police.

5. He made a racial slur that New Orleans should be "chocolate."

Is there any accountablity?

I live in South Carolina and went thru Hugo the one thing we were told over and over again be prepared get at least 5 days supplies in and here I sit now waiting to see what  Ernesto will bring.  I can not feel sorry for the people I saw on TV holding up babies and complaining they didn;t have any milk why weren't the parents prepared for this.

As far as there sorry Mayor will what can anyone say they voted him back in so I guess they deserve what they get.

What kind of person are you?  Did Hugo hit like Katrina?  Do you have children, to be speaking the way you are?  No matter what, they are still humans, black, white or indifference, NO ONE DESERVES THIS!!!!!!!!  We all make mistakes in our lives, are you any different, he without sin, cast the 1st stone (something for you to think about)!

Thanks for paying tribute to Eddie Compass

Quote From: emeryyo

I knew when the Police Chief resigned last year it had everything to do with Mayor Nagin.  And I knew the truth would come out.  Thank you Dr. Phil for asking the tough questions.  Thank you Chief Compass for telling the truth and being so gracious.  Thank you for being a leader.  Thank you for thinking of the city and your police officers for resigning in the way in which you did.  Mayor Nagin will get his.  As my mom says, what goes around comes around.  You never have to seek revenge on a person.  If they are wrong, it will come back to them.  It's not that you wish bad on that person-it's just one of the laws of life.  I think Nagin is the worst.  How do you send thousands of people in to a convention center without water or food or medicine or security and you never take responsbiliity?  He's a liar and frankly he makes excuses for not being a leader.  Firing the Chief only made him look worst.
Thanks, Dr. Phil. You told a story today that really needed to be told! One year later Eddie Compass is STILL the face of true heroism in New Orleans. I hope he plans to unseat the mayor in the next election. New Orleans is going to need it if they are to survive!!

Thank you for showing us who Nagin really is...

I want to say you really exposed that man for who he really is. A liar and a person only there for himself. He is the reason NO is like it is today.

Just to let everyone know as well, Warren Jeffs was arrested this week! Finally.

todays show

It was very uplifting to see that Eddie has somewhat come passed this.  I feel sorry for those first responders that are not getting the respect they deserve for all their hard work.  Mother nature is the main culpret for the New Orleans issue.  As I sit here in Florida awaiting what Ernesto will bring I want to make sure my family and myself are prepared.  But sometimes you just dont know what will happen and how to be prepared for it..you can have your food, water, gas, generators etc...but you never know what your going to be hit with until it happens.  I see what others have written about those in New Orleans and I agree and disagree with some.  Those that can get out and do, should, and those that can't should help out in another way.  Cleaning up new orleans isnt the only thing that needs to be done...children need clothes, schools, books....we need to show the children of New Orleans that they are not forgotten about as well.!!!

How Long are they going to stay in the trailers?

Hi ,

My question is how long are those people planning to live in those trailers?  Do they have jobs?  Are they saving all the money they would have spent on housing for the past year to buy a nice house?  Is there a plan?

What it appears is that their houses were lost.  Their jobs blew away and they are still standing there a year later just dazed and confused thinking that their houses and jobs will be back if they just hold out long enough.

Dr. Phil should have told them to make a plan to get out of there or five years from now you could still be going down there and talking to  the same people waiting for the government to come and fix their broken trailer.

For many people this was -a life wreck- no doubt about it.  It can be a set back or a way of life-their choice.  After a year if they are still standing in the same spot saying their house blew down I believe it's become a way of life.  They don't need money or a hand out at this point they need a plan to get their lives started and back on track.  They need counseling and Dr. Phil.  They need to get started to make things happen.

We all have life wrecks.  Some of us get the news we can't count on our health, some have aging parents that we are going to have to take care of when there is barely enough to make ends meet now, some are getting a divorce and losing half of everything including their partner and kids.  All kinds of things happen.  We don't have the luxury to  stand there for a YEAR and drink it in.  We have to get on with our lives.  We have to adjust and make things happen. Change is coming-for all of us.  We can't just stand there and wait for the government to do something about it.  Many many survivors of Katrina are relocated, doing jobs they didn't imagine.  They are making things happen.  Those are the real survivors- Horay for the survivors.

Eddie is a what America is all about.  As the truths start to trickle out of New Orleans people like Eddie should be standing tall.  News reports showing Nagin wearing Nautica tee shirts while the city drowns and $500 suits at the 1 year anniversary while the city still suffers put the frosting on the cake.

The nerve of a man who wanted more publicity then his employee.  PPAAHHHLEASE!!!!  Mr. Compass needs to run against Mayor Nagin and kick his ass out of office.  Mayor Gulliani had a whole city to deal with also but you seen him running the streets making demands.  Nagin didn't even row a boat till days later.  Whatever!  Mr. Compass, you need to unseat him for sure.  Mayor Eddie Compass I presume?

Chief Eddie Compass

As Dr. Phil says so often in his shows...

'Somebody needs to step up and be a hero....'

I think he's found his HERO with Eddie Compass....and to sit here and watch a decent, gracious man like Chief Compass get shafted by SCUM OF THE EARTH Ray Nagin is inexcusable.....

I cannot believe that the citizens of New Orleans were STUPID enough to re-elect this pompous, selfish, racist pig of a man....

Like many of you, I know feel that New Orleans with the re-election of  'Chocolate City' Nagin has made their own beds and let them deal with it...to let a man like Chief Compass go while Ray Nagin remains is incomprehensible.....

But its not fair to blame all for Nagin, just like its not fair to only blame FEMA and the Federal Government for not reacting to Katrina.  I really hope that the citizens impeach Nagin, it makes me sick to my stomach that he's being paid a salary after his colassal failure and the way he stomped all over 'his' people (the citizens of New Orleans), the way he treated Chief Compass, and the way he continues to spew hatred and racist remarks.

I also wish Dr. Phil would remember the victims in Mississippi......from Biloxi to Bay St. Louis to Waveland.....how about giving these people a hand and some credit?

Oh right, they don't b**ch & moan like the people in New Orleans do.....

What happened is tragic....it will take years to rebuild...and yes there are abuses with the system just like there always are.....we cannot forget the victims, ALL the victims, but I certainly don't want to donate any monies to New Orleans as long as Ray Nagin is in charge....

I took a truckload of supplies and hauled a camper to a friend in Bay St. Louis....and went back a few weeks later with more supplies...I'd go back there before I'd ever set foot in New Orleans, and its all because of the bad taste left by one MAYOR RAY NAGIN.

08/29 Hurricane Katrina: One Year Later, Part 2

Quote From: mississippifan

Hardly any media coverage has been shown to the Mississippi gulf coast. YES, new orleans diserves the coverage but yet so do the rest of the counties that Katrina destroyed including Jefferson Parish in LA and Harrison, Hancock, and Jackson. They werre all destroyed and/or heavily damaged as well m(not to mention other neighboring counties that recieved less but still very damaging winds and rain) Dont forget about us. We feel neglected down here as if no one cares that we are still living in Fema trailers with no towns to call home. Thank you

I couldn't agree with you more!
