just thought Id share this

just thought Id share a little factoid that made my day today!
I watched a NOVA special about E=mc2. And guess what I found out when I went to the PBS websight?
E doesn't equal mc2 !!!!
it only applies to stationary objects.
E2=m2c4+p2c2 (p= momentum)

IM SO HAPPY- It finally makes sense why photons are "massless" since they have energy and mass is supposedly equivilent to energy.
This has been bothering me for so long. (This is why you shouldn't just skim the books)

So few friends

I have a church friend that keeps sending me e-mails to pass along to "X" number of friends and you will get a blessing.

I don't have that many. I have never had many friends.

Usually I have only one friend, to be blessed with 3 friends is a windfall for me.

I am not in the best of moods today to have  pointed out how inadequate I am as a person to not have a great number of friends.

I could not handle a lot of friends.

Mary,

I get those emails alot too and feel bad that I don't have friends to pass them along to.  I personally feel though that I'd rather have a true, good friend than alot of people that hang around but aren't really close friends.  Too many people today label people as friends when they are just aquaintances.  You're true friends are there for you in good times and in bad.  When they ask you, "how are you doing," they really want to know.

I've babbled enough for now.

newly diagnosed

Hi i am new to this board and i am so depressed, i got depression from having so much anxiety and well i had this problem for about three years and i finally got some help. I ended up getting put on paxil.

Now i need some info. Is this drug safe? I am so weary of taking stuff. So does anyone take this mediaction? If so can someone tell me how it has helped them? Also what are the side effects you have had, if any?

Can you drink any alcohol while taking this drug? I know it says not to but i do drink sometimes. Does anyone here drink while on paxil? Also on my info sheet about the drug it says that you should not use aspirin. Why? Can I? I have bad headaches so i need my aspirin.

So sorry bout all the dumb questions.

Thanks for any advice.

I've never been to this page before as I usually hang out on the addiction board. I have however suffered from clinical depression for many years and have been on various antidepressants before finding a combination that works well for me.  I am an alcoholic in recovery who now has almost 13 mos of physical and mental sobriety. I am also a nurse and will try to answer your questions about Paxil.

First I must stress that no pill by itself will cure or control depression. If you have not done so you need to see a psychiatrist and get your self a qualified therapist. The pill may decrease the chemical imbalances that accompany depression but you still have to address the emotional aspect of this disease.

Second you need to be aware that almost all antidepressants take about 4 to six weeks to reach effective levels in the blood so it is important that you stick with the therapy for at least 3 months before deciding it's not working for you!

Third in a very small portion of the population antidepressants have been associated with an increase in suicidal ideation. It is not known if this is caused by the drugs or not, but if at anytime you start to think about suicide you must contact your caregiver immediately. If that person is not available try a suicide hot line.

Also if you have been depressed or suffer from anxiety for any length of time you need to have a complete blood work-up including a Thyroid panel. Fluctuations in Thyroid hormones can cause depression and anxiety.

Now for your questions

Paxil is generally safe for most people. There are some side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness and vivid dreams but these generally go away after 2 to 3 weeks of therapy. If you have any side effects that trouble you it is important to discuss them with your Dr so that adjustments can be made in the dosage if necessary.

Alcohol - you really should not drink any alcohol while taking psychiatric medications for two reasons. one it can increase side effects and two as alcohol is a central nervous system depressant it is counter productive to treating depression. That being said if you are an occasional drinker meaning 1-3 drinks per month it's probably OK but discuss it with your Dr.

Aspirin - I did not see anything about aspirin specifically in the drug information but there are specific warnings about blood thinners such as coumadin and warfarin. Since aspirin acts like a blood thinner you should avoid it as it may increase your risk of bleeding. For headaches I would suggest Tylenol or Motrin. Though you should not take Tylenol if you drink more than 3 alcoholic beverages a week and this can cause liver damage.

Every persons metabolism is different so no antidepressant is a one-size- fits-all solution. Some people have great results with Paxil others do not. I took Paxil for about a year and did not find it very helpful ( although I was drinking alcoholically at the time) . I am currently on a combination of two antidepressants Wellbutrin XL 150 mg and Trazadone 100mg a day and combined with weekly therapy and being sober I am finally living in a world that has color and beauty. I am much better and happy most of the time. Oh I also pray a lot which also seems to be very helpful.

Feel free to write to me. As I said I usually hang out on the addiction board so if you don't see me here drop by over there. In the meantime......

Remember : It's never too late to live happily ever after.

This has been bothering me for so long. (This is why you shouldn't just skim the books)

That was a FACINATING special. Wasn't that fascinating, too, about that woman mathematician who wrote her paper at 16? At fifteen I wrote a paper on light and showed it to an adult neighbor in our apartments and the adult said, "No, that's not possible." So...I didn't turn in. Although, against conventional school of thought so likely my teacher would have said the same thing and the class laughed. My theory has since been proven. Some things that can "seem" impossible is only that... "seem impossible". How Einstein feels is a lot how I feel and I think a sort of nirvanna to feel so at one with nature. However, sadly, a lot of what Einstein discovered was put to destructive use with WMD's. I could see my mannerisms both in Einstein and that woman. Seeing out of the box and observing how magnficient life's dance is whether light or whatever. I just thought it'd be fun to live in a house like that woman did with all the great minds just sitting around pondering math and science (if she only hadn't slept around too she wouldn't have died at 43 after giving birth to another man's child). Wasn't the depiction of Einstein and his wife considering the properties of light and speed of light fascinating too while they both were sitting on a bench watching the woman in the boat on the water and the waves? Talking about what you are talking about about stationary objects. I like that new President Show with Gina Davis on ABC but deplore commercials so often during commercial I channel surf to PBS etc. However, sometimes so fascinating I forget to surf back. I watch PBS specials too. I love Antique Road Show etc. Have a nice day Mary. Hugs and prayers, SEA
