excess skin

Quote From: barb_mc61

I had a gastric bypass and lost 400lbs. I need excess skin removed from my legs, arms, back, and sides. Insurance won't pay for it and I don't think I'll ever be able to afford it myself. I want to be able to get around better. I don't know what else to do. Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

I don't have the problem of excess skin, but I've often wondered WHY insurance won't pay for the removal of the excess skin.  From what I've heard, the excess skin can cause skin infections and other problems, which the insurance does have to pay for...they should get a brain and realize that prevention is the best cure.

Many plastic surgeons offer financing...if you can afford the payments, you might want to look into it.  Otherwise, I don't know what you should do.

Good luck, Becky

physical changes

Quote From: sjames

I am 23 years old and have a two year old daughter. Thanks to my pregnancy my stomach is full of strech marks and im not talking about a few or even normal strech marks im talking bout strech marks that  range up to a half inch wide and it just looks like some one took a knife to my stomach and had a field day. and on top of the strech marks my stomach has alot of loose hanging skin. So yeah i would love a tummy tuck but like many just cant afford it payment plan or not. i have to say my pregnancy did a work on my body. i have strech marks all over my body where there never was any and my breast are not where a 23 yrs olds breast should be but none of that really bothers me so much i invested in some great bras. Its really just my stomach that bothers me enough to want something as extreme as plastic surgery. Its been two years and i've lost all my baby weight and plus some but i still cant wear all the clothes i want because of my stomach. And i'm not talkin bout the type of clothes that show your belly but i cant wear anything other than t shirts with out showing the built in muffin top i have. You know how when you put on jeans that are way to tight and your tummy and love handles hang over so it looks like a muffin well thats what i look like even with out clothes on!!! So maybe one day when i win the lottery i will get a tummy tuck but until then there are alot more important things in my life that come first financialy and like always im the mommy and i gotta put myslef on the back burner.

A changed body is the price of having children.  Most people never do get their old bodies back.  You have the right attitude.  I have a tummy, and I just choose clothes that flatter my current figure...nothing tight and clingy.  My sister uses a body suit that is supposed to disguise the tummy, and prevent the "muffin" look.  Personally, I've never tried it...I don't like the idea of my body being squeezed into a tight body suit...I like breathing.

Good luck with the lottery...I'm still  trying to win it...Becky

your mouth is key to good health

Quote From: puma_nz

I am a Mother of 5 and I work Fulltime. I have and always will put my family before me. This is where the problem lies.

I have very bad teeth to a point where I cant eat, smile or talk sometimes (Very embarrassing) my diet consists of almost Baby Food as it hurts to chew.

I used to have very beautiful teeth when I was young and over the years I had been stupidly neglectful and after giving birth to my son 2 months ago. My teeth finally had enough and they came out. I now only have 4 top teeth and most of my bottom.

This has done alot of damage to my self esteem and my confidence in ANYTHING! has dropped considerably.

We only live on a single income and all that money goes towards bills and food etc. I cannot afford to get treatment at all. I have been to 5 different dentists here in NZ and they all ask for more than what I EARN in a month for ONE treatment!

I go back to work in December 2007 and I dread every moment..

If its surgeory that I NEED (not want) it'll be to have my teeth back

I dont care about my Baby fat or my nose.

I am absolutely miserable yet I still get up and do what I have to do to make my Family happy.

Has your dentist ever suggested dentures?  It sounds like that might be an option to consider.  It is important to be able to eat normally.  It is important to take care of your own health, so you can be there to take care of your kids.  Bad dental health can lead to all sorts of health problems.  It's time to stop dwelling on the fact that you neglected your teeth (it happens), and look toward the future.

Is there any way you can get dental insurance?  Dental implants can be done, but not usually when a whole bunch of teeth are missing.  Implants can be used to make a denture more secure and stable.

You are a great mom to put your family first, but do take care of yourself too...you deserve it.  I hope that your financial situation will improve enough that you can afford to take care of your mouth. In the mean time, brush the teeth that you have to help keep them from getting infected.

Depressed Needs Help

I know I let myself go over the years, it's been years of depression, feeling ugly, feeling unwanted and

then when your husband starts flirting with a woman at his work, picking her up and carrying her to work and even buying her wine. That really hurt! She was small, petite and had real long hair (he likes

long hair) and I cut my hair short, it helped cut down on my migraines. That did not seem to matter to him though, he wanted me to have long hair. I was still the same person inside, just with shorter hair

and fewer migraines. I told my best friend the other day that I would love to be able to have a "Mommy

Makeover", she said she would to. My stomach sticks out so far, I look like I am four months pregnant

and gravity is really doing a number on these old breasts. Thanks for letting me tell my story and thanks for listening, usually it's the cats that listen to me.

A reputable plastic surgeon won't operate on a depressed person.  Plastic surgery will not magically change your life.  If you husband is looking elsewhere, it is his problem, not yours.  I would recommend that you have a Mommy Makeover of the mind.  Go see your doctor, or a qualified psychiatrist.  If you are depressed, you need help, not plastic surgery.  You need to learn to like yourself just the way you are, and if your husband can't see your inner beauty, then he is the one missing out.

Just a note about me...my tummy sticks out too, and I am fatter than I want to be.  I had a mastectomy last year, and have had breast reconstruction since then.  Really, though, the whole thing hasn't changed me at all.  I am very lucky to have a wonderful husband who sticks by my side...married 26 years and going on 27 on Valentine's Day.

What I do to feel better about the way I look is to get clothing that does not emphasize my tummy.  No clingy anything.  I am 46 years old, so the crop top look isn't for me anyway.  I look for clothes that tend to hang straight, and shirts that are not too long.  I usually like button-down shirts the best.  I wear tshirts around the house, and they are not the most flattering.  When I want to look good, I go with the clothes that look best on me. You may have to spend some time in the plus-size department, trying on clothes to find the ones that look the best.  Personally, I shop at Goodwill and Value Village.  A shopping trip to get clothes is fun if you have the right attitude.  I am 5'3", and I weigh 172 pounds, and I am in a size 18.  Although I would like to be thinner, I don't stress out about it.  Due to medical problems, I recently have gained 20 pounds, and I have had to be buying bigger clothes.  I try not to stress out about the size tags...I am just looking for what looks good on me.

So, go shopping, buy some bras with proper support, and get some clothes that you can feel good in.  AND go see your doctor...antidepressants can work wonders on your self-worth.

Good Luck...Becky

Dental care

I am hoping someone reading this will be able to offer advice! I am in desperate need of dental care that I am sure will result in the loss of most of my few remaining teeth. I haven't been to a dentist since I was a minor (I'm 32 now) and I still can't afford to go. I have contacted the Minnesota Dental association several times and they have not returned my calls or e-mails. They have a list on their website of dentists who will "work with you" on payment options, but In calling around I found that none of those options are applicable to the "cosmetic" portion of dentures or a bridge. I have a hard enough time at work trying to hide my teeth and look professional and recently I didn't get a promotion I'm certain due to the state of my teeth. It was a position I was more than qualifed for, but requires many face to face meetings with our vendors. I am worried that without teeth at all, this problem will increase. We don't have a lot of money, but I am desperate to get my teeth fixed. Has anyone else been in this situation, and if so, how have you overcome? Thank you!

I've had gastric bypass surgery and I've lost 160 pounds since my surgery.  I have to wait untilI have finished graduate school but I want to have the extra skin removed from my legs, bottom, and stomach.  If I am able I would like to have the extra skin removed from the upper arms and back.  As an adult I have always been fat, so I am very happy to have lost this weight.  It has totally changed my life.  I feel like such a different person.  My husband agrees.  My children have never seen me this size.

It is possible to remove all access skin there are a few web sites you  can check out for information about these types of procedures,
www.vanitycashstar.com for cosmetic surgery risks, what to avoid and information
& www.realself.com were you can ask actual surgeons about the procedures you are wanting and can get feed back from everyday people who have these procedures done

make sure you consult with at least 5 different surgeons and if just 1 of them says no dont go ahead with it, its not worth the risk

I Want Plastic Surgery Because...

I would only look into plastic surgery if there is some sort of medical reason that caused me to want it.

When I lose weight, I think I will need it.

I believe that I may have lost my elasticity in the skin in my abdomen.  However, by being african-american, I have keloid skin, and that will leave a nasty scar and the cost is not worth it to me.  But if I could be promised that the scar will not be that bad, then I would have it, but I don't know what to do in order to get rid of it.  I will be on the line to get rid of 50lbs.

I'm with you there.  I had a mastectomy and had plastic surgery for breast reconstruction, with implants.  I would otherwise never have considered plastic surgery or breast implants.  That's not to say that I have the perfect body, but I just saw no reason to change anything.  I earned every wrinkle that I have (I'm only 46, so not too many yet, but I'll be proud to wear every one.)

Anybody who is considering plastic surgery for non-medical reasons, please think long and hard...why not just accept yourself for who you are...plastic surgery will not change your life.

The only cosmetic work that should be considered is dental work...but if a person has crooked teeth, beauty isn't the only reason to have them fixed.  A nice smile goes a long way.  Crooked teeth can be a big factor in developing gum disease and bone loss in the mouth...go see a dentist, not a plastic surgeon.

That's my take on the issue...Becky
