Until a couple of year's ago I'd never heard of Asperger's
I was watching a documentary on TVOntario about it, and felt I was hearing the story of our youngest son. It was amazing. Like the father on the show, we had been sent to have our son tested many times. Like him, we were told by the school he needed Ritalin, and like him, we gave it a try. We had the same results. Our son became zombie like and we stopped after a week or two. When he was two we were told he was borderline retarded, which I knew wasn't the case. Later, we were told he had autistic tendencies but wasn't autistic. His life wasn't easy. I think his worst year in school was with a teacher who tried so hard to make him fit in. Instead, he developed very odd behaviours, like hiding in his locker. The next year, with a better teacher, the most severe behaviours disappeared. During that difficult year, we also got called into the principal's office to be told he was being bullied and he needed to change so that he wouldn't be so easy to bully. I've often wondered if the parents of the bullies got called in and told their children needed to be more accepting of people who are different. Getting back on track, he was in his late twenties before we knew he had Asperger's. After seeing that show, I talked to him about it. We both did some research online, and he went to the doctor and got a referral to a psychiatrist. Since then, he tried to get help in Toronto but there's a long waiting list and the cut-off age is 30, so that's not likely to happen. He has never worked, but he wants to. He's working on his social skills. He is very intelligent. I have a lot of hope for him.
