(Original Air Date: 09/27/06) Parents, you might be your kids' drug dealer. They could be getting high from products in your pantry, under your sink, or in your medicine cabinet. Dana says her 16-year-old son, Josh, has been experimenting with over-the-counter drugs. She says he's downed bottles of NyQuil, packs of cold pills and an entire bottle of mouthwash -- all in an effort to get high. See what drastic measures she took to bring Josh to the show. Then, 21-year-old Christina says she can't start her day without taking half a bottle of cough medicine. Her four-year addiction to robo-tripping is spiraling so far out of control, she fears her days are numbered. What will it take for Christina to kick her habit? Plus, a mom whose son died from an overdose of over-the-counter drugs shares her tragic story.  Share your thoughts, join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

help for families

I just saw the show about teens and drugs.  I have
been down that road with my son so I'm very familiar
with the path.  I was disappointed that Dr. Phil did
not give resources e.g. Al-anon, Alateen for family
members.  I was also disappointed that Dr. Phil did
not share about using the court as a resource e.g.
the marchment act, Baker act, or drug court.  NOt everyone can use the Dr. Phil to send their child to rehab, so it would be helpful to the masses to know
about services in their area

TALK TO HIM!

Quote From: sodap906

Is there an over the counter drug test kit that will detect pills and cough meds? where i live i've called and the only ones i can seem to get will detect pot, cocain and meth. but if they don't detect the other stuff how can i find out if my kid is doing something he shouldn't.

Talk to him. Spend time with him. Check out his friends. Know his schedule. Know the parents of the friends with whom he "hangs." Make sure his free time is used for quality things. Kids who have too much time on their hands often make POOR (and sometimes dangerous) choices.

Make a routine of sitting and talking with him daily. Find an activity you can share with him weekly. Develop a strong relationship and trust will grow. Soon, he'll come to you and share things (not like a girl shares, but he'll still share the big stuff).

Don't give him money to blow. Have him earn his money. Then monitor it to see how he spends it. If  you SUSPECT anything, there's probably good cause to suspect. We mothers need to listen to that little voice inside our heads that tells us when something just isn't right.

If his grades are lousy at school and he's uninterested in extracurricula things, he's probably disconnected. With disconnect often comes lonliness, helplessness and the chance that he'll turn to drugs (etc) to make himself feel good.

Again, if you really believe you need a drug test than you should know that you ALREADY have a problem. Even without the test, you can treat the situation as you would if you knew for sure that he were using. Pretend he IS using. What will you do now????   That's exactly what you need to do with your suspicious. Why do you need a test to prove your suspicions. 99% of the time we mothers already know the answer to our questions!

Good luck and God bless. Always remember, if he's using drugs, he's HURTING. And if he's hurting, he NEEDS YOU!

addiction

I watched todays show about teens using household drugs to get high.  I am the mother of a Herion addict and I just would like all who say not my child she/he would never do this.  You are wrong. I thought the same thing and my son was 18 when I found out he was snorting herion and with in one year he was shotting herion.... He had done rehab after rehab and now is in a state prison doing 7 years... he was only 22 when he went in....Watch what you children do and make sure you put all the stops in their way . If you think your child is doing something you are properly right.   We are not to blame for our childrens addiction , we are to blame if we do nothing about it.

Message to Dana--Girl I hope you read this

Hi Dana, Let me tell you Mom, you are the best you and your husband (Dad) and your daughter (Sister-Girl) I just got done watching the show and what you just went thru, was so very hard, this message is nothing more than words to encourage you.  I use to do "lots of drugs"  (I am 48 years old now) by the pure Grace of God I do not anymore, I was not lucky enough to have Dr. Phil but I was blessed to have God.  But thank God for Dr. Phil right? Ok, then.  Don't worry about Josh being so upset, for I am a still recovering drug addict and let me tell you, his anger will fade with time, and after the 4 months are over and he is done his time in rehab he will thank you for loving him enough to take the risk of his anger.  That is what you call "Unconditional" love.  WOW what a GREAT family you are!!!!! My hat is off to you.  God bless you all!!! From the bottom of my heart.  Tears roll down my face by the end of the show, your daughter, you and your husband I just wanted to hug all of you, the love was all over your face, and the fear all over Josh's face.  How 'bout that Dr. Phil, I sit with my "I love Dr. Phil" tee shirt and my "I love Dr. Phil" coffee cup and watch the show.  We are so lucky to have his advice.  God has truly blessed us.  Take what you learn from him and spread the word Dana. I will keep your family in my prayers and Josh is already entered in my nightly prayer journal, I am serious.  Again, you have a great family and you lady are a Super mom, what a great example you are setting for your daughter, I only wish I could of had that as I was growing up, I did not.  So it just makes my heart smile when I see someone like you Dana.  God Bless.  Love you Sandy

There are always exceptions, thank God.

Quote From: sister3

I disagree with you saying that it's the kids that don't get attention at home that get into trouble. I know parents (and I am one) that has raised two boys the exact same way and they turned out totally different. They had the same loving home, the same upbringing. One breezed through the teen years the other barely made it through them and we thank God every day that he is finally getting his life back on track. You can't always judge the parents by the kids behavior! My parents were wonderful, I had 7 siblings and only two of us were real brats during the teen years.

I am not dumb enough to think that ONLY the kids lacking attention turn to drugs. I said "mainly" and I stand by that. There will always be exceptions to every rule. I, too, am raising two kids and both have very different coping skills. One is beautiful (a model), bright, compassionate and atheletic YET she doesn't like herself very much and internalizes everything. The younger one is male, very bright, compassionate and lacking in physical skill, yet he's so self-confident and lights up a room with his presence. BOTH are being raised in this nurturing household, yet both are very different in their means of coping with problems.

Sorry, but the apple usually DOES fall close to the tree. Again, there are exceptions, but as a teacher 99.9% of the troubled kids had TROUBLED parents who came in to save them from their detentions. All we had to do is to look at the parent and we could understand CLEARLY why little Johnny was so mixed up.

Stop

Quote From: iiiglowwormiii

What pain killers are you taking exactly? Opiates (Vicodin, Oxycontin, et cetera), or just over the counter pain killers?

DON'T TAKE LARGE AMOUNTS OF ADVIL!!!!!!!!! Its not psychoactive at all; its not doing anything for you, and it probably is the main reason you have had headaches, fevers, and have vomited. You aren't addicted to advil, you can't be. Stop doing it, especially if you are taking prescription pain killers that already have acetimetiphen in them.

I am sure-no I KNOW  that you are a beautiful girl and are very intelligent.  There are other ways of dealing with your stress.  You don't need pills to get you through the day.  Try prayer if you believe(even if you don't).  Ask the Lord for strength, patience, whatever it is that you need.  It nevers hurts to ask, and you won't get what you don't ask for.  Is there anyone(even a little older than you) that you trust enough to discuss how you feel?  I know a lot of the time if I just talk about it to someone, it makes me feel alot better.  Or even keeping a journal, writing can releive stress.  Even if no one ever reads it, it feels good to get it out of your system.  Just remember that you are better than that, you deserve better than that.  I hope you can stop this habit, and find other ways of coping with problems.  Keep your head up!!  You deserve better!!

God Bless,

Regen

God gets the glory

Quote From: amwhiteside9

I was watching the show while I was cleaning and was shocked to hear you say that you have never seen someone find religion and quit drugs in 27 years.  When I was fifteen I got in to drugs heavily.  I did everything from weed to heroin.  My drug of choice was cocaine.  I did drugs for over a year and my mother tried everything to get me to stop.  I have a wonderful family with three siblings.  We are very close and lucky to be living in such a wealthy area outside of Houston.  Teenagers had nothing to do and almost everyone I went to high school with was rich.  So drugs was a huge problem in the town even though parents were scared to face it.  I got kick out of school and sent to alternative school when I was in ninth grade.  One night my mom came to the house were I went everyday to snort cocaine.  She grabbed me and put me in her car.  I was screaming and punching her the entire time.  The whole ride home she just sat there and never said a word.  Finally, when we pulled up into the driveway she said (without even looking at me), "Do you not care about me, dad, your brothers and your sister anymore.  You are killing us and all we want is the have the regular you back."  And then she went into the house.  I sat in that car for about two hours thinking.  That day I made the decision to quit on my own!!  I went inside and told my mother that I was done with drugs.  Of course, she didn't believe me but I was determined to prove to her that I was serious.  The following days were awful.  I was vomiting, shaking, and sweating.  Through that whole experience my mother was there.  Cleaning up, putting cold wash cloths on me, and holding me when I was shaking.  My mother is my hero and always will be.  She prayed everyday and I believe I would be dead if it wasn't for God and her.  So the point to my story is that people can quit on there own. I have been sober for seven years now and I am living proof that people can do it if they have hit the bottom or put there mind to it.

Sincerely,
Anne
You are living proof that the whole "disease" thing is a crock.  You chose to do drugs, and  you later chose to quit, through the grace of God.  It is all about choice.  Remember, you can do ALL things through Christ who stregnthens you.   Now before all the hostile people write me nasty-grams about how I don't know what I am talking about, I used to be a drunk and a junkie, and decided one day to CHOOSE not to drink and drug.  God gets the glory for my choice to no longer use.

my son

I only caught the tail end of the show today but all of the lying and the attitudes of the boys really hit home with me. Currently my 21 year old (who is emotionally about 14) has been told to leave the house AGAIN, as of last night. We have been through so much with him in the past year, and hearing Dr. Phils words "you are not dealing with him, but his drug induced mind" is finally starting to sink in. We thought we were on the upword swing, after he just got out of jail for 15 days for an old warrent he could have taken care of with 8 hours of community service. To sum it all up, we finally found proof that he was doing cocaine, he stole 3 checks out of my desk drawer and wrote over $1,000 on them for drugs. Everyone told us to arrest him, but when it came down to it, we just could not do it. After finding proof, everything else added up...the sniffles, blowing nose all the time, the cards he used to cut up the cocaine laying around on his dresser, the cold medicine, the over use of beer. We tried helping, they would only commit him to an out patient clinic which was only 1 day a week for 2 hours. We do not have the money to place him in a rehab center, or a "Dr. Phil" to bail us out. I fear he will remain on this path and we will find him in prison or worse yet, dead. I feel hurt, mad, like my heart is broken. Right now my mind is telling me to be angry with him (something I havent really tried yet) not to talk to him, to basically ignore his needs like he does ours. My heart tells me "what if" what if you ignore him and he dies, how will you live with yourself. How can he face his problems when he isn't thinking clearly. He ran 5 credit cards up to 12,000 dollars, took a loan out for a motorcycle for 4,000. He has no money, works right now for $9 an hour. "where will he live, what will he eat, how will he survive" the mother in me cried out. I have no clue what to do, or what to think anymore. I'm walking around in a daze
