(Original Air Date: 09/28/06) It begins on a dating Web site with flattering e-mails and IMs with handsome photos attached. The man pours on the charm and soon professes love, but he needs money -- to pay medical bills, fund investments and, most importantly, to get back home to the States and finally meet his long-distance love. Is his love for real, or just an elaborate con? Despite being taken for thousands of dollars in bogus money orders, Dee-Dee believes the man she knows as Cole just needs to get home from Nigeria to make good on his debts and marry her. Then, Annette is sure she's being deceived by a man who claims to be a contractor in Africa, but that doesn't stop her from sending him money. Have these women really fallen in love or just fallen for an international scam? Share your own online dating stories and talk about the show here.

Great show!

I am so pleased that this show aired.  There are so many scams through the internet, it's quite sad that people are constantly falling for them.  I almost did.  But of course, "if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is".   I get approximately 50 email scams per day.  I always check things out before I give up money that I don't have.  I found a website about a year ago that people can go do to post the internet fraud emails that they have gotten so that other people who are about to be scammed can view these other scams that are similar or likely the same.  The website is called www.internet-fraud.com.  I have gotten so upset over these scams that I want to do something about it.  I am going to start out at some local Western Unions and find out if they have some type of warnings posted in their locations for these types of crimes.  I think that it would be great if these companies would educate people before they go wiring money to Nigeria, etc.  I think that could possibly put a halt on some of this criminal activity.  It needs to stop.  There are a lot of senior citizens that get taken for all their life savings.  I think if people would just get involved in their own states and demand that some type of warning be posted to these would-be-victims, we could save so many people from spending their much needed money.  Please everyone, try to get involved in putting a stop to identity theft and internet fraud.

Sincerely,

Linda Phillips

Thanks Dr. Phil

I recently joined a dating website and had responses. One response was from a man that said he was from CA and posted in London as an ambassador. He claimed that he was a widower. He stated that he had attended the University of East London. He proclaims that he is in love with me and can't wait to meet me in person. Says his work will pay for his air ticket back to the states. I had met someone online 5 years ago and had 6 months of a wonderful relationship before he was killed on 9/11 so I know a online relationship can work. I think after Dr. Phil's show I am nibbing this thing in the bud before I become a victim. I just hope that I am not stopping something that could be great.

Men are also targets

My son got involved with an overseas relationship as well.  He was hurting from a broken marriage and was easy prey.  This person said she was Russian.  These people must have a scam school they go too.  It starts out nice and sweet and then Oh I would love to come and visit but I have no money can you send me some.  Oh I missed the plane because customs thought I was smuggling a treasure from Russia.  Can you send me more money because they have me in jail.  I really want to come but my former boy friend is scaring me.  Then you get an email from a friend saying she has been in a terrible accident and is unconcious and not expected to live.  Boy friend is dead and she needs money for hospital care.

Everyone told him she couldnt be for real and she wasnt and it cost him several thousand dollars some of which he begged me to lend him.  Fool me.

Her name was Olesya M. and she lives in Russia.  She also has a friend Marina.  She claims to be well educated and she certainly doesnt look like she is hurting for money from her pics.  They are well posed.

So beware

Wow!

This totally hit home with me. Although I never sent any money to these people, I heard how they were stuck in Nigeria, had a sick kid that needed medical attention, etc. There is too many excuses they used to get money to list on here. One thing that I gained was a real good friend. After she sent me an email on myspace everything clicked and we were working together to get him back good! We would both talk to him on the internet and he would say that I was "the one" all the while telling her that she was "the one". He ultimately quit talking to both of us. I just hope that this gets out to all women!!! They are preying on single, divorced women and will stop at nothing!!! Women beware!!!

be smart about money

Quote From: smartcookie

Imagine my surprise when I saw today's show! The same thing almost happened to me, and after signing up for match.com...I was shocked.  A beautiful man, pictures sent promptly, working construction in west Africa...family all killed in car accident. wanted to marry me..after one chat on Yahoo at his request! He was never clear about where he lived in the US, changing from Iowa to Illinois in the same conversation.Letters were misspelled, poorly written, hardly understandable. I asked him what was up; that I knew something was definately fishy. He had given his name as Richy Billy, then as Richy Adams. After I told him that I was going to research him more fully using some legal connecions, "just to make sure, you understand"....his email address was blocked.

I am niave, beleiving people are usually upfront. especially on Dr Phil's site! This show just blew my mind...but I followed my instincts, thank god! Hey Dr Phil, pay attention to complaints a sign with your endorsements!

be smart with your money and who you give it too... make sure you know them personaly money dosnt grow on trees. be smart be careful..

Scams

I too received the nigerian scam e-mails and also one from the Phillipines.  I immediately went to the FBI Website and found out that IT IS A CRIME TO REPLY TO THOSE KINDS OF E-MAILS.  So I forwarded the e-mails to both the FBI and Secret Service.  I had seen reports on the news about the scams.  I absolutely stay out of chat rooms-You never know who's on the other end and what kind of harm they can cause you and your family.  BEWARE!

It is easy to fall victim...

I "met" this man on the internet.  Who also told me that he was stuck in Nigeria.  I believed that I really loved him, have showed everyone his picture, and everything.  I had a suspician that he was taking advantage of me, but I didn't want to believe it.  I had sent him over 5000 dollars via western union.  Including cashing a check that I found out was a fraud.  I have been black listed and can no longer get a bank account.  He repeatedly tells me that he is coming to the USA to pay all of the bills.  I guess I believed him because he has also sent me gifts, such as a surround sound entertainment system, a fruit basket.  I also have heard the same stories that was given to the ladies on Dr. Phil's show.  I beg anyone out there, please do not be victimized.  I sent him a text message saying that I was going to watch the Dr. Phil show and he was talking about internet love scams.  I told him that their conversations sounded a lot like ours.  I am going to turn off my cell phone, because that is the only contact he has with me, besides my email addresses.  But I just wanted to send a big thank you to Dr. Phil for waking me up.

Another scam for the lonely

Something like this recently happened to someone I work with.  He was conversing (online only) with a woman from Russia and she agreed to come over to be with him/live here in the states.  She sent beautiful pictures of herself but to come over-he had to send her $3000 for train and airfare.  She (if it even was a woman) was very convincing in all aspects and I think he fell in love with her.  He did just that and never heard from her again.  I wouldn't consider this person to be stupid, I know he was looking for a companion and felt he had exhausted the local dating scene.

Craigslist.org has seen this scam more than a few times-especially with housing-people claiming to be moving here from another country for college and stuff:

  • value of cashier's check often far exceeds your item or deposit or rent - scammer offers to "trust" you, and asks you to wire the balance via money transfer service
  • banks will often cash these fake checks AND THEN HOLD YOU RESPONSIBLE WHEN THE CHECK FAILS TO CLEAR, including criminal prosecution in some cases!
