(Original Air Date: 09/28/06) It begins on a dating Web site with flattering e-mails and IMs with handsome photos attached. The man pours on the charm and soon professes love, but he needs money -- to pay medical bills, fund investments and, most importantly, to get back home to the States and finally meet his long-distance love. Is his love for real, or just an elaborate con? Despite being taken for thousands of dollars in bogus money orders, Dee-Dee believes the man she knows as Cole just needs to get home from Nigeria to make good on his debts and marry her. Then, Annette is sure she's being deceived by a man who claims to be a contractor in Africa, but that doesn't stop her from sending him money. Have these women really fallen in love or just fallen for an international scam? Share your own online dating stories and talk about the show here.

Hard to Believe

I too was contacted by 5 different "men" when I put a profile on "My Space"  All the men were very good looking and claimed to be born in the USA but for one reason or another were in Africa.  I thought that was odd, but decided to talk to them to see if it was real.  I immediately noticed that their use of English wasn't very good.  Their sentence structure was bad and they used a lot of the same words.  I believe that there were no more than 2 men between the 5 profiles that I saw.   I may be a born skeptic, but I didn't find their stories believable.  One of them even claimed to have his 10 year old son with him in Africa but didn't have a tutor for him.  He allowed the child to spend 8 hours a day sitting in the motel room by himself. (I told him that he was the worst parent I had ever heard of)  I feel sorry for anyone who is so lonely that they don't look at what's happening before they get emotionally involved.  After about a week I got bored with the entire story and blocked them from sending me any messages.  Even when confronted they denied everything.  Simple amazing!  I'm amazed at the number of predators that are on the internet.  Everyone needs to beware and not believe it just because it is said by someone on the internet.

09/28 Love Scams?

Quote From: swchick

" He went on to say that I missed the "'est'.He was testing me to see if I truly loved him. We had never spoken before and he already said he loved me????"

Not my definition of "slick."  I still cannot see how any woman with a mature understanding of love relationships could even for one moment think that fellow was on the up and up.  GOod for you for  shooing away Mr. Ridiculous Request.  The only think I would do differently is delete his mails *without responding* to him, in addition to notifying the dating service or my ISP.

The women who are taken must think to themselves,  "I'm limited in some way and have limited dating options, but this wonderful guy thinks I'm the pink of perfection.  If I prove how devoted and loyal I can be, by doing things an "ordinary" woman would not do for him,  he will see our realtionship is truly special, and his devotion will only grow and all my dreams will come true".  In other words, the women are epitomy of the perfect "mark" -  you can't cheat an honest man or woman, but you can cheat someone sold on the idea that they are getting in on a hot deal if they can be "just a little" unethical themselves.

LOL..........No, he wasn't "slick" in this case, but I have come into contact with a lot of smooth talkers.

Women with really low self-esteem usually fall prey to these scam artists because they feel like they can't get any better. These guys tell these women how much they love them and want to be with them. These guys really make the women feel like they are worth something.

The guy just randomly started instant messaging me.  I didn't even say anything to him and he told me he loved me.......lol! You are right when you say he wasn't slick. I guess he was a novice and just needed more training ;). It is hard for me to believe that some people fall for it, but then again, I don't know how badly that have been beaten down emotionally. Emotions can cause you to do some pretty strange things.

I agree with what you posted here. You make a lot of sense.

Take care of yourself.

This is unbelievable

I received an email today from a guy who contacted me earlier this summer. At that time he was living in Maryland. His profile said he was an accountant, but during a chat he said he was an interior designer. We only chatted a few times, before he went on vacation to the UK. He never contacted me again until now. I wanted to post this message as a warning.

Dear Friend,
My name is Harris Cole. I just came about your email address and your brief profile through an email listing affiliated with the US Chamber of Commerce and I would be very interested in offering you a part-time paying job in which you could earn alot.I just resigned my job as a research scientist for ARINI(Agricultural Research Institute of Northern Ireland but I still work as a freelance consultant for the instistute which gives me very much time to do my own work which is basically being a freelance researcher who could be employed by research institutes to do research projects anywhere in the world.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO FOR US?

Presently, I have just been granted a funding to head a research project in the tropical regions of West Africa regarding rare and vulnerable plant species and this would be commencing very soon, However my funding were by my American counterparts which sent me the bunch of payments mostly in US based money orders and cheques. Getting an accountant in the states or opening an account would have been my best choice but I have a deadline to meet and taking any of those choices would cost me time and a whole lot of other requirements I am not ready to deal with as I would be traveling a lot in the meantime. So presently, assuming you would be able to deal with cash, I would be willing to employ you on contract basis to be my payment representative back in the states, this way I could issue and make these Funds out to you, you could then cash them easily, withdraw 10% of the total amount on these money orders as your commission and then send the rest back to me through Western Union wire transfer.

JOB DESCRIPTION?

1. Recieve payment from Clients
2. Cash Payments at your Bank
3. Deduct 10% which will be your percentage/pay on Payment processed.
4. Forward balance afer deduction of percentage/pay to any of the offices you will be contacted to send
payment to (Payment is to forwarded either by Money Gram or Western Union Money Transfer).
HOW MUCH WILL YOU EARN?

10% from each operation! For instance: you receive 7000 USD via cheques or money orders on our behalf. You will cash the money and keep $700 (10% from $7000) for yourself! At the beginning your commission will equal 10%, though later it will increase up to 15%!

ADVANTAGES.

You do not have to go out as you will work as an independent contractor right from your home office. Your job is absolutely legal. You can earn up to $3000-4000 monthly depending on time you will spend for this job. You do not need any capital to start. The employees who make efforts and work hard have a strong possibility to become managers. Anyway our employees never leave us. The only problem I have is trust but i have my way of getting anyone that gets away with our money,I mean the FBI branch in Washington gets involved if any of my employees want to play funny games so if you have bad intentions in mind then don't
just try it because you will be caught with ease.

MAIN REQUIREMENTS.

18 years or older
legally capable
responsible
ready to work 3-4 hours per week.
with PC knowledge
e-mail and internet experience (minimal)
And please know that Everything is absolutely legal.
If you are interested in our offer, please to reply. Mail directly to my personal email address: harristextile@yahoo.co.uk
Thanks for your anticipated action. And we hope to hear back from you.

Mr.Harris Cole,
MSawyer Researches Ltd Ireland.

I am in the middle of one of these

Quote From: mrszorn

I'm having a bad feeling that the meeting didn't go as planned. I hope you prove us all wrong. Are you still here?????
"My Man" is a Missionary from France who has been in Cotonou, Benin for the last 8 years, working for a Mission Outreach for Kids.  Up to seeing this show, I totally believed he was real.  Yet, just this morning, I talked to him on the phone for an hour, telling him all about this and my doubts, and he will not comply by showing himself to me on a web cam.   He does not have a reason.  Now I doubt.  Our first meeting didn't work out either,  and it looks bad for another one to happen.  Be careful!  I am eager to read how yours go.   Signed, Islandr

to accept mail from a list of known persons or compaines you designate as welcome emailers. All other emails will bounce - some programs allow the bounced person to ask to be let in.

You can block any specific email that you don't want to hear from.

If you want to let strangers send you some surprise mail or not have to bother with the trouble of enabling specific correspondents,  I recommend you do what I do.
Never review mail unless you know the person emailing.   Tos everything else. Don't even review it. Delete it.
If it's clearly annoying spam from the heading alone,  you might want to report it to your ISP's spam detection service.    Sometimes that is too much trouble for me.

People don't get scammed because of their looks

People don't get scammed because of their looks, they get scammed because they are trusting. They get scammed because of a need and the scammer comes across as the answer to their prayers.

Love scams, mail scams, internet scams aren't the only ones. How about the legitimate businesses that use emotions or other for gain?

My brother died. He had been sick for a long time and had his cemetery lot bought, his headstone bought and his funeral pre-paid. We didn't know about these things until long after his burial. There were things supposedly not covered by the pre-pay of $10,000. The cost kept going up until the final cost was close to $20,000. This was a legitimate funeral home. Has anyone out there had a funeral home pressure them to buy a more expensive casket? "After all, this is the last thing you are going to do for your mother."

How about the lawn service you ask to do two treatments on  your lawn a year and find they upped it to 6 or 8 and expect you to pay for it?

What about the scam, discovered in the prison system? Prisoners were using the newspapers and the television to advertise for a mate. These men had pictures of beautiful women and handsome men to send out to whichever gender was appropos.

There is the bank scam that appears on the internet and by phone. An error, questionable employee, whatever, has occured and they need your account number to trap this employee, to verify your funds, whatever.  There is a credit card scam that uses a logo so much like Visa, Mastercard, Discovery that people think it is their card company needing more information and giving them a questionnaire to fill out.

My credit union, bank, and credit card companies have all said they do not solicit information over the phone or the internet.

As a matter of course, I delete any e-mail I do not recognize. In fact, my niece called me and asked why I didn't answer any of her e-mails. She had changed her address and I deleted them all. I have told everyone that if they get a new address, to put something in the subject line to let me know it is them.

I have had to close two e-mail sites because of the amount of scam I was recieving. If someone sends you an e-card it is a way for scammers to get your address.

Quote From: swchick

The men  want citizenship and money.
The girls want the fantasy that they are blessed with a soulmate (who so desperately needs them, and so won't dissapoint them as other men have) destined to cross continents to worship at their homely spinster feet.

Tell your sisters, and report to  the police, and immigration officials what is going on.  Tell your sisters you are reporting the men and why.

The chances of these men being on the up and up is not vanishingly small, it is non-existent.

Thank you for talking with me.

My sister will never believe me. They  already told us this is there lives and they will live it there way. I don't won't them hurt but I don't won't them to hate me either. Helpppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp!!

Did this guy con you out of your mailing address? Just say no to "gifts." They are only interested in your address and your bank account numbers, not the thoughtfulness of sending you a present.
