(Original Air Date: 09/28/06) It begins on a dating Web site with flattering e-mails and IMs with handsome photos attached. The man pours on the charm and soon professes love, but he needs money -- to pay medical bills, fund investments and, most importantly, to get back home to the States and finally meet his long-distance love. Is his love for real, or just an elaborate con? Despite being taken for thousands of dollars in bogus money orders, Dee-Dee believes the man she knows as Cole just needs to get home from Nigeria to make good on his debts and marry her. Then, Annette is sure she's being deceived by a man who claims to be a contractor in Africa, but that doesn't stop her from sending him money. Have these women really fallen in love or just fallen for an international scam? Share your own online dating stories and talk about the show here.

09/28 Love Scams?

Quote From: onrygrl

This guy is on several dating sites all with the same pictures of the model Michael. He talked to one of my friends giving her the same lame story about needing money to get home that he was over seas on a job. He told her he lived in California and his name was Kelly Pamela.  This was on American Singles.  He was also on Yahoo Singles and a few more.  What a winner! My friend didn't send him anything because she didn't have anything to send him. I feel sorry for the women who fall into this trap!  I hope there is some sort of action they can take to get some of their money back!

That shift key is hard to use, isn't it?

Quote From: cajuncat49

NOT ALL SCAMMERS USE A MODEL PIC. I BUSTED ONE ON  MATCHLINK.COM  LAST NIGHT. HIS PROFILE HAD PICS OF A REAL MAN. THEY CPOY AND PAST PICS OFF REAL PEOPLES PROFILES AND US THEM. LIKE I HAVE TO KKKEEEPPPSAYING IF YOU HAVEN'T BEEN THERE DDDOONN'T JUDGE.

YOU LOOK LIKE THE FOOL HERE...

Love,  the models are "real men" too, FWIW.
Both of the overly-credulous women featured today fell for pictures of models,  and  this point is an example of just how foolish these particular women were.

It's fair to point out that the pictures of  handsome-but not-a-model faces or less-perfect faces, or even rather homely faces can be stolen and used to present a false front.    My point is that these women are looking for shortcuts to magical perfect love, and are therefore vulnerable to being suckered because they are looking for a cheat themselves.

Todays Show

There will be a women in the audience today, she is a large lady with blond hair..she was to be on the show but never got to. She is representing RomanceScam.com(on yahoo) and from what she informed us in our group there, Dr. Phil really didn't get to the heart of the matter. He should have shown people WHERE some of the Cafe's are in Nigeria and different places these scammers do there scamming.

The Cafe' owners can't keep up on all of them and they are trying to make a living i guess but i would think they would monitor there customers better.

We in the group have sent our input on the subject to the Oprah, Montel and other talk show circuits to jump on the ban wagon and lets expose these people and what there doing to our people here in the states and all over!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

nigerian scams

Yes I have been contacted by so many of these nigerian scammers that I have learned the scripts better than some of them. I think they must be passing my name thru all of them . My blocked list has been so full that I had to clear some out and they contact me again.  I know that there must be some good people living in Nigeria, ghana and lagos but I don't chat with them online. There are too many that are just scammers to be bothered with them. would be great if the internet brains could figure out how to block communication with whole countries.  but I seem to be contacted by west african scammers at least 4-5 times every  week or recieve letters from Bank clerks that are looking for partners to claim money of a deceased depositor.  Besides reporting these as spam to yahoo or msn, is there anyone else I should be reporting them too?

Love scam

I to have fell for this scam. I had a man by the name of Richard, who said he was working for a company that would send him around the world to work. He had beautiful words to share and it was like a script being said to me. He would never answer my emails with a direct answer. I tried calling the cell phone number he had given me and he would answer and say a few words and than I would loose the call. I much information that i had printed out from this love scam. I never had anything to give this man other than my love and he kept saying i was not being fair because I wouldn't help him. I had a few other men who knew this was a scam and warned me and help me though this man called Richard. Which was funny was that when I thought I had gotten rid of Richard another man with a totally different race yet the same way of typing said he was in love with me. This was 3 different people who tried to scam me. I feel for any one man or women who find this heart break and trying to take advance of us. Please be safe and be aware. God Bless

Exactly!

Quote From: texasgirl06

Wow.  Just... wow.  That must frustrate you to no end.  The obvious logic hole for your mom was, if he were really "very rich", why on earth would he need to borrow money?  Yikes.  That's upsetting when you see people you love making bad decisions like that, especially since you can't really change their behavior for them.  You would think that being stranded in LA would have been a big wake-up call; that's not exactly an easy hop back to Heathrow!

Exactly! Why would this rich handsome intelligent man be looking for a woman on the internet??? Duh! But she doesn't see reason. We've had to get used to not having her in our lives anymore, she wants nothing to do with us because we tried to talk her out of this absudity and she's hooked. I still worry that she'll end up a statistic one day, scamming her out of money is one thing, but she's flying all over the states meeting men, who knows what physcho's are out there. Thanks for listening. Can't wait for todays show, wish they showed it in the UK.

$975,000.00

I apparently won $975,000 in a email lottery in Spain.  The Infolottagency contacted me and told me I won.  After emailing confirmation letters. But not asking any info, but my name and phone number.  I had registered to moneyballs.com.  From that ,my email was put in a lottery and drawn every year. And I am suppose to give 10% of my winnings to charity of my chosing.  This morning,  I receive a call from Spain a Lawyer MS BARR> MARTIN SOTELO phone number is 0034-636-809-516, Fax: 0034-658-346-308, Email: consultoresmartinsotelo@yahoo.es and I think this is address: AYALA,11,1A PLANTA-28001 MADRID, SPAIN.
They sent papers for me to sign to represent me in Spain. Because I told them I could not make the trip to accept.  I have been trying to contact somebody to let me know is this a scam.
When I saw your show this morning.  I was hoping you can help me find out the truth.

09/28 Love Scams?

Quote From: karleen345

I find it amazing that an intellegent woman can be taken in by a con artist, myself included. In 1978 I re-met an old friend and let myself believe his line of B.S. I was so embarassed  that I allowed myself to get into that mess. This guy took me for anything and everything he could find while I was at work. I came home to find almost everything was gone, including my car! When he was late picking me up from work I knew what had happened and I prayed for myself to be wrong, but I knew in my heart that I was not wrong. Since then I"ve adopted a quote but can't remember whos quote is is. Anyway I quote "Isn't it strange that a woman can fake an orgasan, but a man can fake an entire relationship!" I don't date anymore because I've found that any man that is interested in me is only interested in what he can take from me.

Help me out here ladies.  How does this happen?  How do you turn into people who have zero self worth?  How do you allow yourself to be cast in the roll of victim in this manner?  Where are your full lives? Where are your interests, outside of an overwhelming desperate craving for attention from a man, ANY man, even a pretend one? Even one who asks you for money?  FOR MONEY?  Come ON.  No self respecting man would ever ask or take money or anything else from a woman that he even has a human relationship with, let alone a cyber one!  Honorable men do not behave in this manner. You must know this on some level.  How did you become such an empty shell?  Don't you want MORE in your life than this?  Don't you want to have a more meaningful existence than this?

IM SURE THERE ARE ALOT OF HONEST MEN LOOKING FOR WOMEN ON LINE

but ladies if the man your getting involved with cant provide you with a real address in the u-s-a, cut all ties, most people on line can be cheacked out, if you can invest in on line dating go the extra mile and pay the extra price to have a background check done on the person your getting involved with, relly its alot cheaper than what these two poor women went through on dr phils show today, and another rule of thumb to go by is, IF THE MAN OF YOUR DREAMS NEEDS YOUR MONEY YOUR DREAM IS NOTHING BUT A NIGHTMARE WATING TO HAPPEN!!!!  DROP HIM AS SOON AS HE NEEDS YOUR MONEYAND YOU HAVENT EVEN MEET HIM IN PERSON YET!!, a real man needs not your money to come to meet you!!!! only the address of a place to meet at!!!! remember that !!!dont be fooled, STOP THE SCAMMER BEFORE HE SCAMS, TURN HIM IN TO THE WEB MASTER!!!
