(Original Air Date: 09/28/06) It begins on a dating Web site with flattering e-mails and IMs with handsome photos attached. The man pours on the charm and soon professes love, but he needs money -- to pay medical bills, fund investments and, most importantly, to get back home to the States and finally meet his long-distance love. Is his love for real, or just an elaborate con? Despite being taken for thousands of dollars in bogus money orders, Dee-Dee believes the man she knows as Cole just needs to get home from Nigeria to make good on his debts and marry her. Then, Annette is sure she's being deceived by a man who claims to be a contractor in Africa, but that doesn't stop her from sending him money. Have these women really fallen in love or just fallen for an international scam? Share your own online dating stories and talk about the show here.

I had this to happen to me just a few weeks ago...a guy who I met through Yahoo personals sent me an IM saying he needed to talk to me.  He wanted me to cash a payroll check $3700 and send it to him via western union.  He kept wanting my home address so he could have the check sent to me.  I refused to give him home address but told him to send it to a PO Box.  He said he didn't think it was safe to send to a PO Box.  Then he told me to keep $250. for myself and send him the rest.  I DID NOT DO THIS.  Then just a couple of days ago, he contacted me again and wanted me to loan him $250. I told him to send me the information to my email address which he did.  I had a friend to check out his email address and he told me is was from Nigeria.  I knew the guy was trying to scam me especially when he said he knew by looking at my pic and profile that he could trust me and that I was the only one in the United States that could help him get his money so he could come home.  He gave me a companys name in England that he supposedly worked for but, I couldn't find the company when I done a search for it.  His profile said he was from Calif. and that he was in the "militery" and showed a picture of a white haired guy in army fatigues and said he was 50 and retired.   The last contact I had with him when he "told" me to loan him money I asked him "who the hell he thought he was" asking me for money.   Haven't talked to him since.
You used your brain. Nice to read that once in awhile.

Wrong impression !

Quote From: dgbent56

I just had to share this. Two years ago I was scammed by a Nigerian. It cost me over $11,000 and a bandruptcy. I did everything that I was told to do but  nothing could be done. I almost lost the business where I had received the counterfeit cashier's check. I have done all kinds of reading on these types of scams and others and I don't want to see anyone go through that.

I have had countless folks ask me for prices for my products and they were going to outfit their stores with my products and pay by credit card. There credit cards are phony! I know to not answer any emails that come from Nigeria or any other foreign country. It is a waste of my time.

Please don't do business or anything personal with these people until you check them out, thouroughly!!!!!

Now, I feel better! And thanks, for letting me share.

I am sorry but I am offended by you comment about South Africa - I am a 28 year old South African woman and these scams are done by Nigerians! Even in our country "South Africa" the Nigerians are a BIG problem. They run about 80% of the drug trade in our Beautiful country and for you to associate South Africa with Nigeria is a big mistake. Please in the future make sure that when you make a statement like this that you have all the facts. Maybe the person trying to scam you, was living in South Africa but was NOT a South African citizen!

Where was the comment about South Africa? Scammers live in every country, are from every country in the world. Your being offended is ridiculous. There are a lot of scammers from South Africa, and murders, and rapists, and child molesters, and thieves. Grow up. Every country on earth has monsters. Some countries have bigger problems then others, but people are people wherever you are. Bad, good, stupid, kind, smart, funny, selfish... whatever we're all humans.

My comment was made following the blog on 23 Sep 2006 - the title was"Nigeria/South Africa Scare the Heck out of me!" the person who posted it was dgbent56 :

I did not say that me country was 100% crime free and yes all countries have there problems - I just did not want a misreprestation of South Africa. The blogs that I read regarding this subject - (Love Scams) makes it seem that most of the scams are done on Yahoo and that is why I asked if it has happened on other messages boards like maybe ICQ?

The other similarity, was that the people doing it was Nigerians. So the question is this - Does other countries follow the same trend?

I was just trying to protect my country, like I would assume you would do for yours...?

And if that is why, you say I should grow up, then maybe you need to find it in your hart too see other peoples point of views on matters, as I would assume all adults do?

Regarding matter closed!

You implied your country is crime free, or at least no crime is perpetrated by South Africans.

" ...these scams are done by Nigerians! "

" ... person trying to scam you, was living in South Africa but was NOT a South African citizen! "

Your statement about yahoo was incomprehensible.

" ...after reading most of the bogs is that Yahoo is not save? Or has this also happened on other sights? "

Nigeria is apparently the computer scam capital of the world at the moment. It is not surprising that there is so much crime in Africa. It is so poor that people are extremely desperate. I don't hate them for it.

I have no need to protect my country with hyperbolic statements. It is the best country on earth (not perfect), but if there is a problem with it I certainly won't sweep it under the carpet, or turn a blind eye to her faults. I will fight to keep my country the great place that it is.

" ...I should grow up, then maybe you need to find it in your hart too see other peoples point of views on matters, as I would assume all adults do? "

You refused to see anyone else's point of view that is why you made the statements you made. I never assume anything, but based on your writings here, I would assume you are a very young child. You didn't state it as just an opinion, but as a statement of fact. You chastised the other poster for their opinion, just like you have done to me. You demand other's accept your opinion while denying other's the same courtesy.

Now the matter is closed. Have a nice day.

Nigeria Nightmare

A few days ago, I was asked to let someone named cole harrison into my instant message session.  I refused but wrote down what the box said.  I emailed him and asked him who he was and how he got my information.  He emailed me back stating he got my information from Yahoo Personals and I told him that no one with that name had viewed my profile.  He said his was still under review.   I let IM me and we did that for a couple of days.  On the third night, I got a feeling all was not right.  He did not think I had long distance on my phone so he sent me the number he was at 011234805086621 in Nigeria.  I called the number and after many rings, a man answered with an oriental accent.  He claimed he was cole and I told him that just could not be because Cole was not oriental.  He said he was Dutch,  I told him he did not have a dutch accent.  He asked how would that sound and I said not like you.  I immediately hung up and tool the measures to assure he could not contact me again.  He uses many IM user names one of which is his email address cole_harrison54@yahoo.com cole_harry and cole_harry 2007.  Being the inquisitive I called up the Houston phone book because that is where he said he was from and there was only one cole harrison there.  I called and made contact with his wife and she has turned these details over to the police.  If possible Dr. Phil please mention this again on your show.

INTERNET SCAMMERS USING COLE HARRISON'S NAME

My name is Mrs. Cole Harrison.  I watched this show last year and remembered being shocked that a scammer was using my husband's name.  It did not effect us until  this past December when we started receiving invoices for items NOT sent to women all over the country b/c of a  credit card issue.   The company alerted us to the 'Internet Cassanova" scam.  NOW, these scammers in Africa are not only using my husband's name, but OUR home phone number and address.  He is claiming to be 54, lives in Houston, is a contractor working in Africa and has a 15 year old son.  THIS IS NOT TRUE!  This week 3 women have called our home.  We have filed a report with the local police department and they are investigating this matter.  They will contact women in Yahoo! personals, IM and My Space and that is what we know of...there probably is many other ways they are contacting women.  I urge women to NOT send money or accept money from anyone through the internet.  IT IS DANGEROUS!!!  Not only am I concerned for these women, I am EXTREMELY concerned for my family and our children.  I still haven't figured out why anyone would use our personal information.  Do they not realize that they will be discovered???  My family will take this as far and as wide as we need to go to get the information out there and shut these people down.  I have asked  Dr. Phil and Robin for help, as well as the authorities.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Cole Harrison
