(Original Air Date: 10/23/06) Dr. Phil conducts a groundbreaking social experiment. Six individuals from different walks of life, with different judgments and prejudices live under the same roof in an attempt to break down the walls of hatred and intolerance. Gary, 26, is a white supremacist who hates all people of other races. B., 58, is an African-American woman who thinks all white people are "ignorant sociopaths." Staci, 22, is a thin woman who thinks obese people are "disgusting blobs" and not people at all. John, 24, is over 600 pounds and hates skinny people. Christina, 22, believes all homosexuals are sinners. Tessa, 19, is a lesbian who hates straight people. Dr. Phil puts them to the test with assignments that force them to work together with their adversary. It doesn’t take long for hostility to break out, sending Dr. Phil over to the house, saying, “This has got to stop.” Will these guests learn acceptance, or turn on each other? Share your thoughts here.

So so sad

When watching this episode, I was really interested to see how it would turn out. But when the people were brought together, it was so sad to hear the ugly things they said about each other. I know we all have preconceived notions about differences in people but dang! They were down right MEAN.

I thought B was over the top. She has reason to be angry about how she was treated but to be so nasty towards all white people isn't fair. I have been treated unkind by whites as well but I don't believe all of them are socio-pathic killers. Gary has major issues and is ignorate.

I don't agree with homosexuality because I believe it is a sin. I don't hate them but I chose not to deal with them either. I think God is the only judge that counts on this one.

Fat folks are people too! They need love and acceptance the same as everyone else. I have not issues with them. I think it's up to them to change their lives and be happy with who they are. However, John was just ignorate.

I hope they all start to focous on their own issues and stop trying to avoid the reason why they are there in the first place. Good luck Dr. Phil, you're going to need it.

Bea is the most likeable

as a caucasian i can  really understand her anger.  she is elderly and has probably dealt with some serious nasty racism over half of her lifetime.  i hope she can get over most of her anger i believe she is the one who has the most hope and having hatred in your heart isn't good.

John the obese guy is a manipulator and will be friends with anyone for the moment if it benefits him.  by the way, he probably did smell, even the lesbian and the lesbian hater were spraying Lysol around the apartment.  I remember having a roommate long ago who was 100 lbs overweight and when she didn't bathe she smelled bad but i didn't comment on it.

i have to give all the people credit for this experiment.  even if i don't have any of their prejudice to be living with several strangers in one house - I couldn't handle it.  by the way when is the 2nd part?

Stephanie, your assessment is so right on!  Thank you for your logical responses.

As far as John is concerned, he is messed up.  Yes, everyone in the house said he smelled (I can't imagine having to live with a roommate that smelled - yuk!)

The second part is tomorrow (Monday). Can't wait to see it.

I'm sorry, but I've seen cars with stickers that say  "Black Power" on them. I think to myself, "what's with that?" Any car that had the opposite on it would at the least have a note put on it. If not, I'd put one on.

We're all one race, the human race, and we need to stop dividing ourselves and work together.

I totally agree with you.  Unfortunately I don't see a time in America when we will stop dividing ourselves. We've been divided for so long; it's engrained in our culture.  This country has a history of "divide and conquer."  I don't see it ending anytime soon.  Look at the responses on this message board. Most people are coming down on B and not Gary. I wonder why?  He said he wants a country with all white people, but everyone is getting angry at B because in many ways, she's speaking the truth. I DO NOT agree with her anger, but I understand it.  I feel carrying around anger only hurts the one carrying it.  But that goes for everyone in that house.

I really don't mean to sound so pessimistice, but in 2006, there are some very hostile feelings between whites and blacks; a lot of misunderstandings.  I hope this experiment will help.

Thanks for the interesting link. My fear is that for every factual website from a reliable source like this one, there is a counter-site maintained by racists professing their revisionist version of history.  I had a Neo-Nazi classmate once in college  who was trying to get all kinds of revisionist history books put into the school library -- you know, the kind that say there was no holocaust, there was no slave trade, etc. Of course the college staff laughed him out of their offices... but now that we have the internet, anyone can claim anything as the truth.

Yikes.

Quote From: janissi43

Just recently there was an article about how mankind started in Africa (actually this has been a widely received fact) so I'm not quite sure where you got the information about the first recorded man being in Greece.

I don't think B was saying that "her race was the only one that built this country."  My interpretation is that she wanted it to be acknowledged that her race played a major part in the building of this country whether people want to believe it or not.  It is rarely documented that blacks not only built this country on the sweat of their backs, but have played a major part in discovering inventioned used to this day.

Not too many people know this or care to know.

First of all, I think it's simplistic and dismissive to say that any one group (ethnic, religious, whatever) "built" America.  It was a group effort.  Not all of them contributed voluntarily and not all of them contributed in the same way, but the history of any country is much more complex than the input of any one influence.

I thought it was pretty well documented that blacks provided a lot of the "sweat equity" behind the U.S. economy (just ask Brown University).  There are a lot of other underappreciated ethnic groups in U.S. history--how about the Chinese  who built the railroads and provided a lot of other services and labor out West?

I think the theory that humans evolved (yes, I believe in evolution) out of Africa is neither here nor there, but I don't see why B insists on making such a big deal out of it.  If it's true--so what?  It's not like any of us, of any color, had anything to do with it.  And doesn't it make racism look especially pointless (whether you're white and hate blacks or black and hate whites)?

In terms of ancestry, most people aren't what they think they are, anyway.  Most African-Americans in the U.S. have some white ancestry (not voluntarily, unfortunately, but it's there now).  A lot of whites have some non-white ancestry.  I had a friend whose mother swore up and down that they were "pure English", but when my friend finally had the chance to do the genealogy, she got back five or six generations and discovered that everything had turned to German and Cherokee, and she had maybe one English branch of the family, 200 years ago.  She thought it was hilarious that her family had been so stubborn about it; she didn't really care what she was but she thought it was interesting to know.

My family started coming here over 300 years ago; as far as I know I'm mostly Western European (British Isles, Germany, France, Switzerland) and maybe a little Jewish, but there could be a lot of things in there that I don't know about, so what's the point of worrying?

i too see a guy so desperate for a friend, i relly think hes already spent most of his life being talked down to for his size, i just wish he would let people take him for the person he is on the inside, thats what matters, he did show he sees past color with B but he at the same time hurt B with his words thinking it would strenghtin his bond with gary, that was sad, hell i know B has a big mouth thuth be known she probley came from a very large family just as i do, and we all know if your growing up in a big family lol  you better be loud if you want to be heard, but gary needs not to try to make his friendship have strings attached such as the ones he has put on it.B DOSE NOT DESERVE THAT, and at the same time gary dosent deserve the cold dish he is being served, but as we all know when you go in the kitchen to cook it can get messy they just need to change the dish they are all trying to cook here, and clean the kitchen up a bit, it will make the next meal taste a lot better.
when it comes to john he always feeling sorry for himself its time he fixed that

10/23 The Dr. Phil House: House of Hatred

Quote From: fthayer

Dear Dr. Phil viewers. I became flabergasted when I saw those six people go at each others' throaths. The hostility was at a fever pitch. It was a good thing that a security guard was close by to protect each other from all the chaos that was happening.

The one guy who I felt the least sorry for was John. He not only hates thin people, but it appeared that he hated life in general. His attitude of not being a team player in the Dr. Phil house was awful. Underneath all that fat and blubber was a very bitter person who blamed everyone else for his predicament. If he's too lazy to take a shower, then John ought to lie down & read Dr. Phil's ultimate Weight Loss Solution. Previous guests of the Dr. Phil Show have worked hard to achieve their target weight. John will never get there if he just sits around and does nothing about it. He needs to stop being such a wimp & get real about his morbid weight.

Staci is the one in the Dr. Phil House who hates fat people. I really like Staci a lot. She has a lot of gusto and isn't afraid to speak her mind. I find Staci to be a very attractive young woman. If this episode of the Dr. Phil show was on dating, then I'd be one of the first in line to ask her out. I like both her looks and her fiestiness. I too, think that fat people are disgusting blobs. However, I was best friends with a fat person. He was named Mark. The reason why I didn't nag him about his weight was because he was a kind person who lived life to the fullest. He didn't whine or feel sorry for himself like John. Mark took good care of himself as far as heigene is concerned. Mark is a hardworking person who goes through life with his head held high. John could learn a few things from him. Getting back to Staci, Dr. Phil called her shallow but we all have faults. I don't think that she would have a problem with me because I am just slightly overweight. Still, I look nothing like John. Staci just has to be more aware that weight is a very sensitive issue. For example, I once called my friend Natasha a fatso. Apart from being slightly overweight, Natasha is a very beautiful woman. I apologized sincerely for my inappropriate slur & we instantly became friends again. If Staci learns that same lesson, she will become a real catch. Even with her obvious shortcomings, Staci is someone who I would like to meet in person.

The other person who I had a problem with was Gary. Who the hell does he think he is? Racists are not good people at all. While I too am proud to be white, I also respect people from other cultural backgrounds. People from every culture have something to contribute. After the 9/11 attacks, I was very skeptical about Muslims. However, those responsible for various acts of terror are extremists, just like Gary. Muslims are typically good natured people who deserve a closer look and a fair chance. They contribute to society just like everyone else. I agree with B. in that black people have roots in America. I feel bad that their ancestors had to go through slavery. If white people like Gary weren't so hateful all the time, then maybe B. might not get so defensive whenever whites are around.

I won't get into the homosexuality issue too much. I will confess that I used to be homophobic. I hated gay people with a passion. Then, I went to Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada. They taught me how to be more tolerant and understanding. At first, I hated gay people for being so different. Now, I accept gay people for who they are and the lives they choose to lead. I can't remember the name of the homephobe in the Dr. Phil house but I'm confident that she'll come around, just like I did.

Sincerely,

Fred.

i have to agree with thia one i have a boyfriend that is over wieght but he carrys it well for he is 5feet 9 inches tall and he is solid but for john he has to make a choice here to get most of that off and weight at least 200lbs

You're so right! We all are not what we think we are. my family came here from Germany thru Holland (about 300) years ago. we've always considered ourselves P.A. Deutch on (Dad's side) I found out recently that  yes there's German AND Jewish on that side. Mom's side is French, Native American,Irish, and Welsh. So.. I'm a mutt that happens to look like the proverbial blond blue-eyed girl next door. Like I've said before, who knows who slept with who's milkman all those years ago. And really, aren't there more important things to worry about?

Yes everyone black, white, and every color in between have those racists that will try to warp the truth but the truth needs to be told no matter who it benefits. To cover up some truths only benefits the racists on the other side.
