(Original Air Date: 10/24/06) Aging used to be a word that made women cringe, but now 30 is the new 20, and 40 is the new 30. Along with his wife, Robin, Dr. Phil talks to fantastic 50-something women! Donna is 52 and says her 22-year-old son, Anthony, disapproves of her frequenting the same clubs he goes to. Anthony says his mom likes to stay out until 4:00 in the morning, date guys his age and wear revealing clothes. Will Anthony learn to accept his mom’s lifestyle? Then, Dori says she’s clueless about fashion. She wears jeans and a ponytail every day, and has only bought two new outfits in 20 years! Robin and fashion expert Cojo come to the rescue! Plus, the big prize winner in Robin's “50 and Fabulous!” search is revealed, and Dr. Phil and Robin honor an inspiring woman who helps ailing children of war. Talk about the show here.

Find out what happened on the show.

Life Begins at 50!

When I was a child, I used to think 50 was old.  As the years went by, I'd here people going on and on about how depressed they were to be turning 50.  I almost fell into that negative trap. But, back in 1999--actually between October of '99 and March of 2000--I went to 3 wakes and/or funerals.  All three people were under the age of 50, and all three died suddenly.  In fact, the last of the three was someone I'd just seen the DAY BEFORE she died, and she was smiling and talking, even though she was in the hospital at the time.  I made a promise to God and myself, that when I turned 50, I wasn't going to be sad, that I was going to be thankful and celebrate!
That was 3 years ago--I'm soon to be 53(November 9th), and every day I thank God for being alive, for my health(even though I was diagnosed with MS last year), my daughter and the fact that I still have BOTH of my parents(Mom is 78, Dad is 81.  Both are active--they still go dancing!).  I make sure to thank God every day for SOMETHING--because all one has to do is read the papers or watch the news, and they'll see that a lot of people aren't living to see 50!
I walk 3 days a week, and am considering working with a trainer to help sculpt my body--I recently saw a picture of a woman who is 86--and she weight trains several times a week, and she didn't get started until she was in her early 70's! If she can do it, so can I!!!
Aging doesn't have to be depressing if you make up your mind to live life to the full, trust in God, and be thankful everyday!

You Go, Girl!

Quote From: pearlhanna

I am often compared to cheese...  I'm aged but have a funny smell.  I'm kidding of course!  I don't have any grand kids.  I had an okay childhood.  Working for the public aged me a bit.  What aged me more is, well, time.

I , like you, don't lie about my age--I always tell it(52).  Plus, I love the way my hair is graying--I have a natural streak of gray going right in the middle of my head, and lots of gray sparkles in the front.  I consider it a blessing to live long enough to get gray hair--look how many YOUNG people are dying way before the age of 50!  I say embrace life, thank God everyday, and you'll age gracefully!

I cut my own hair too.

I saw today's show the first time around, & didn't get around to posting.  I'm 56 & doing better now than in my 20's, 30's & 40's!   Back then, I struggled with depression constantly.  I have a totally different perspective on life, having spent several years as the mother of an addict while supporting my husband's long fight with cancer.  Both are "in remission" right now, and Life Is Good!  As for the fashion thing Robin & Cujo did.... that woman looked terrific.  HOWEVER.... I didn't appreciate the crack about never letting anyone touch your hair except a professional.  I can count on my fingers the number of times I have gone to a pro.... and have only gotten a decent result twice.   I have been styling my own hair since I was a teen.  I cut it myself (it's a short haircut, too) because the stylists that I can afford are either not very good at what they do... or they don't care.  I get nice compliments most of the time, and if I do screw it up, at least I haven't spent money on it!  So don't knock those of us who can't afford the big bucks for a 'real' hairstyle!  And, about the shoes:  Robin, some of us at our age do have orthopedic problems... How about showing some stylish shoes that won't put us  on crutches??  LOL
I cut my hair and it looks great! But, you know what, a lot of people just can't cut hair very well. (Even some professionals) I don't care for heels. Years ago I would wear shoes with heels because I liked the way they looked. I've since outgrown that, I wear shoes that are comfortable. I have found that getting older gives me the freedom to do what I really want to do, rather than what someone else thinks I SHOULD do. I'm not talking about being rude or disrespectful or anything like that. I'm talking about being the me that I am and not worrying about what anyone else thinks. I am more comfortable in my own skin at my age now , than I ever was back in my younger years. I don't mind getting older at all.

07/20 Fifty and Fabulous!

Quote From: pearlhanna

I turned 50 yesterday.  So today I'm OVER 50.  My parents didn't share in my amusement when I told them I received my first issue of AARP magazine.

I am watching at Robin and Cojo give Dorie a make over.  WOW.  What a difference!  Not to be a smart alec, it took a a few bucks with that make over?  I'm in the class, as Cojo stated,  "construction crew".  Any advise for that look for a coupon-clipping, apartment dwelling, over weight gal?

Thanks Robin, Dr. PHil and Cojo.

Me at 50

I'm fair, fat, fifty and flatulant and......fabulous.  At least  some of my friends think so.  I don't waste my time on anyone who thinks otherwise. At fifty, friends and family are what is important, not botox, designer clothes and a face stretched out of shape from surgery.

D.G.s from Canada rock.

07/20 Fifty and Fabulous!

I am 47,  I wear a size 10 low straight  505 levi. I have them in dark blue, white and black. I also have a few custom made hemp draw string pants for the summer. I have a collection of Rolling Stones t-shirts, several different types of blouses, keds and converse and addias sneakers, sandals and flip flops.  This is what my income allows me to buy and I  haven't been able to buy anything new in over 2 years.  When I see the shows about fashion and what and what not to wear, they may as well be screaming classism.

I can not afford the type of outfits being presented on these shows. ALSO, depending on your geographical location. they are not even offered at the local department stores. So it just seems to me, that when you have these types of shows, you are only talking to the women who have husbands (second income) or women who have a disposable income.
