Do you know someone whose behavior is always making you raise an eyebrow? Dr. Phil helps his guests distinguish what's normal and what's not. Kelly says she’s tired of her husband, Scott’s, jokes. She says they’re inappropriate, obnoxious and rude. Scott admits that his jokes can be sexual in nature, but he loves being the life of the party. Will Kelly loosen up, or does Scott need to tone it down? Then, Vicki fears that she’s dying and visits the doctor at least once a week. Her husband, Harvey, says she needs to stop worrying about her health or she’s really going to make herself sick. Is it all in Vicki’s head, or does she really have a reason to be afraid? And, Shelita refuses to celebrate the holidays because she says they’re pagan festivals. Her sister, Akea, says she contradicts herself by accepting presents. Will Akea be able to embrace her sister’s decision, or is Shelita being unreasonable? Plus, Dr. Phil and Robin kick off their participation in the 2006 Toys for Tots holiday campaign! Join the discussion.

Agree w/ Shelita

I think Shelita has very valid points about the holidays. I think it is rediculous the mental energy and financial resources that go in to buying presents. At my inlaws, the stack of presents for six children is five feet high, and I know that they spend thousands of dollars on gifts for the kids. That is not what the true spirit of the season is about, but it is definitely what the majority of Americans focus on. I think it's a tragedy, and one reason our society is so superficial.

I am a nurse, and I've decided that this year I will work on Thanksgiving and Christmas on the cancer floor. This to me is a more responsible way to celebrate my maker. AND, no gifts please! I am blessed  in other ways  and don't need more material possessions.

Religious freedom

Shelita,

I totally DISAGREE with Dr. Phil on this one.  You have a right to your religious beliefs.  I think

it was wrong of Dr. Phil and your sister to try to make you out to be the 'bad' guy on this.

Just because your views have changed, does not make you worse or better then anyone else.

You have a right to raise your child as you wish, WITHOUT condenscending people Talking AT YOU instead of talking TO YOU.

If you do not 'wish' to celebrate the holidays, neither YOU or your children have to either..

Stand your ground.

Not necessarily

i LOVE LOVE LOVE your GED essay idea.  You sound like someone who is very intuitive and who thinks very hard about life and consequences...you go girl!
The JW's are not the only religion that believe the same way on this topic.  Their are other religions, for example the Christadelphians.  They believe everything as Shelita said, but do not have much more than that in common with the JW's.  I'm sure there are other religions out there that share that common belief also.

11/01 Is This Normal?

Quote From: homeboy

You would think that there would be more respect for a persons "religious" belief, especially when they present themselves in such an intelligent and sober manner. Since when does the traditions of some people automatically prevail over those of others? Dr. Phil should have advised the "sister" to respect the opinion of the guest. The only "holidays" that our Creator endorses are the Holy Days He instituted Himself. "Love not the world, neither the  things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lusts thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth forever." 1John 2:15-17
If she doesn't want to celebrate holidays, that is her business. However, isn't accepting holiday gifts a bit hypocritical? Also, what right does she have to tell other people's children that their holidays are wrong or evil? If any adult ever spilled the beans about Santa to my kids, I would be furious. If any adult ever took it upon themselves to force religious doctrine upon my children without my consent, heads would roll. If she wants her beliefs respected, maybe she could start by respecting others' beliefs herself.

No, she wasn't completely correct.  She said Paganism is satanism, which it is NOT.

And Pagans do believe in a God(s), it's just not her God and that is what she was having  a problem with.

And yeah, you're right, we Pagans do like to celebrate! LOL

I think Pagans have a good attitude. What the hell is life with out celebrating and feasting now and then? It breaks up the day in day out chores..it gives you something to look forward to.

11/01 Is This Normal?

Quote From: jettav

Actually I understand more then you think I do, but as far as these holidays having pagan roots is  not reasons why or why not I celebrate, in fact, paganism isn't even in my vocabulary when it comes to my belief system. I celebrate in ways that I can glorify my God and I am teaching my kids to do the same. I realize that there are people who do not celebrate these holidays for thier pagan roots, but I, personally  have never based my beliefs on those, As I became an adult, a muture Christian, a parent, I sought out my own way of celebrating, I do the things I do, the way I do them, becuase it benefits "my" lifestyle and my kids are kids, they enjoy our holiday festivities, they are missing out on nothing and to me that is a good thing. ANy way, the main thing I am expressing here is I don't care what the roots of a holiday are, I celebrate or nto for my own reason, paganism has nothing to do with my beliefs.

I would like to say that I believe in the religious freedoms of our country. Anyone has the right to worship as they wish. What I would like to say is that as a person who believes in the Word of God and the God of the Bible I have to adhere to the authority of the Word of God. God separated his people apart from the heathen nations and therefore they could not participate in the heathen practices without displeasing their God. I still believe that Jesus Christ, (Yahshua) expects his people to turn from these practices. I know that there are alot of good people in every religion. But again, as a bible believer, my salvation is not according to my good works but according to my showing my love for my Savior by my submission unto him through obedience to his word.  As Shelita said, "Who do you want to please, your child or God?"  I must please God first and then everything else will go well. As far as the remarks of your children missing out on things, I have to say that the God of the Bible also set aside special days for thanksgiving, worship, and family times. These festivals if observed correctly will give your children and your whole family good wholesome quality time together. And yes, even some fun. Your children will know One who is real and faithful and true. Santa is nothing more than an ungodly counterfiet for the one true God. And no, I am not a jew. I am a gentile believer who just wants to please God. My transition out of the holidays was not an overnight one, nor was it an easy one. I used to love Christmas ect... just as much as anyone else. But I can truly say that now that I am free of the hold of it that it is like a weight of ton off my shoulders. And I believe my God is so glad that I took him out of it too! The Truth will set you free! God bless!

Then why does she accept gifts and  let her daughter go celebrate with her sister? Sounds to me like the sister is right. She's CHEAP and using her "research" (which is only partially right) as a way to get out of paying for gifts and other things.

Well put.

Quote From: bmiddleton

I too have done research on these Holiday's and do believe the guest on todays show has it right.  Good for you.  As Christians we are called to set ourselves apart from the world.  We are not to conform.  We do not celebrate Halloween but we do celebrate Christ's Birth and his Ressurrection.  I am aware that Christ was not born on Dec. 25th.  But his birth is worth celebrating.  I do not believe Christians will go to hell if they do celebrate Christmas and Easter.  No one says you have to put up a tree, decorate, and buy gifts on Christmas or even celebrate his birth on Dec. 25th but I do believe it is not a soul judgement issue.  What gets you to Heaven?  Believing by faith that Christ died for me, accepting that and ask forgivness for my sins.  By doing this does it make me a perfect person without sin?  Absolutly not.  We are still Human and by no means perfect and we still sin.  But by the Grace of God I know I'm saved and will spend eternity in Heaven.  Even though I'm not perfect.  Wasn't that why Jesus came in the first place!!!!
I agree. I too am a Christian and have enjoyed the freedom that has come from my relationship with Christ. With that freedom comes my ability to enoy the holiday season, without condemnation or fear. These holidays may have been adapted from pagen holidays, but we enjoy them today in our society as family get togethers, and a celerbration of life and the year to come. Enjoy the holidays!

It is what you make it.

My mother is a god fearing women, who always gave my brothers and I the right to believe in what ever we wanted. I was never interested in Christ and always felt uncomfortable around Christmas when my friend's families or my family would go to church. My mom always said "do what you want, it's Christmas." I know what she means now. Christmas is what you make it, and I make it a time to be lazy, eat a lot, watch football, listen to music and see my friends and family. There is no baby Jesus about my holiday nor is there celebration for the son god! My advice is to make christmas what you want it and if you are Christain and don't like the pagan part of it then don't celebrate Jesus that day or go to church. Make it just another day to be with your friends and family and go to church and celebrate Jesus on every day of the year. By the way I wonder what that young lady does on Christmas?

Blessed Be, Elffie.  She did some research. But she didn't do all of her research. It's amazing how someone can think that their way of worshipping is the only way. And this, from a text that is over 2000 years old. Has been translated through hundreds of languages and has been re-written many times. Most recently by a church that did not want to lose members. Scare them with an evil being called Satan and they will stay with the church to find " salvation "....

Brightest Blessings, elle1951
