Do you know someone whose behavior is always making you raise an eyebrow? Dr. Phil helps his guests distinguish what's normal and what's not. Kelly says she’s tired of her husband, Scott’s, jokes. She says they’re inappropriate, obnoxious and rude. Scott admits that his jokes can be sexual in nature, but he loves being the life of the party. Will Kelly loosen up, or does Scott need to tone it down? Then, Vicki fears that she’s dying and visits the doctor at least once a week. Her husband, Harvey, says she needs to stop worrying about her health or she’s really going to make herself sick. Is it all in Vicki’s head, or does she really have a reason to be afraid? And, Shelita refuses to celebrate the holidays because she says they’re pagan festivals. Her sister, Akea, says she contradicts herself by accepting presents. Will Akea be able to embrace her sister’s decision, or is Shelita being unreasonable? Plus, Dr. Phil and Robin kick off their participation in the 2006 Toys for Tots holiday campaign! Join the discussion.

I'm guessing "not"

Quote From: hotmomma79

As one of Jehovah's Witnesses, i can tell you that we shouldn't be accepting gifts for holiday's.  It makes me sad to think you may have been exposed to some hypocritical people who gave you the wrong idea about the way we believe!  I am also interested to see if this person is one of Jehovah's Witnesses, i guess we'll have to wait and see!
I think she's heading in the direction of truth, but because of something she said, I don't think she is a JW. She said something about burning in hellfire. So, even if she's had some contact with JWs, she has more learning to do.

why?

I obviously understand and respect peoples views and opinions, but when it comes to people speaking about something they don't understand, and not only speaking about it, but down right disrepecting it....that is something I cannot tolerate to well.

People should be informed about certain things, such as paganism, or should not talk about it at all! Paganism is a FAR cry from satanism, and if someone were to take the time and even TRY to understand what it's about, maybe they would be more tolerant of it and other religeons, such as this. Pagans respect the earth and all that abound on her, including other people. One of the first things we learn is  'an it harm none, do what you will'. Which in essence means that whatever we do, it cannot be against anyone, because it will come back to you, threefold.

I have heard that ignorance is bliss....but come on now people...it can't be that blissful to think that everyone is out to harm you or those you love....am I wrong?

"Tell is like it is" fell short on this one.

OMG!  Finally, a show that talks about Pagan holidays! LMAO!

Let me just say that, I didn't read anything about this (the info isn't up yet), but if it's Halloween she's talking about, she's right that is a Pagan holiday.  Easter and Christmas has Pagan traditions as well. =)

Should be a very interesting show to watch and I am anxious to see how the Doc "tells it how it is." LOL

In my humble opinion, I think he should've done a bit more research before this one aired.

11/01 Is This Normal?

Quote From: kleesun

I'm glad somebody finally asked that.  People get much too wound up about atheists, agnostics, and pagans.  I mean, we're cool but we're really just ordinary people.

*****

I'm an atheist myself (which doesn't make me an anarchist, Satan worshipper, or debauchee, in spite of what you may have heard).  Got a quotation on my gmail homepage the other day that made me laugh:

"We are all atheists about most of the gods that societies have ever believed in.  Some of us just go one god further."  (Richard Dawkins)

You quoted Richard Dawkins...I love you! MARRY ME! LOLOL

There is only one day...

Quote From: beleevers

Shelita is right...with just a little research, people will know that many of the holidays the world celebrates (including Christmas and Easter) have pagan origins.  Shelita is not wrong if she chooses not to celebrate these holidays.  Right now, it appears that she would be sinning against her own conscience if she did so.

As a Christian and a serious student of Christ's teachings, however, I believe that as she grows in her faith, she will realize that it is possible to celebrate these things as "holidays", not "holy days".  When each of these holidays comes around, we emphasize to our kids that these are not holy days...and exactly what the issues are with them.  We then conclude by saying, "but it is good that the world recognizes the birth (or the death, burial and ressurection) of Christ at least one day a year."  For us, Easter is about candy and colored eggs only; Christmas is about the spirit of giving, the love of family and presents; Thanksgiving is about family time and good food, etc.  I can not , however, find anything redemptive about Halloween.  I blast this holiday to my kids, but I do let them go to their school's Fall Festival to get some candy--no witch and ghoul costumes, of course!

Not trying to tell you how to raise your kids, Shelita, but balance can be created by distinguishing the difference between "holidays" versus "holy days."  There is scriptural basis for this.

that the bible tells us to remember and that is of Christ's death. He said to remember him in that way. Other traditions, festivals, celebrations are condemned in the bible.

11/01 Is This Normal?

Quote From: poetmom

Just wanted to let Shelita know that she is NOT alone, and there are PLENTY of other Christians out here who have chosen not to celebrate holidays that have wordly rather than Heavenly origins. We have to do what we believe is best for our families, and our eternal lives, and if other family members, or Dr. Phil, don't understand, then that's their loss.
I just don't undertsand this...

Holidays bring people together, they create a feeling of unity and of community celebration. Why would someone reject that?

It's so sad to me. Here we have this time of year where everyone just has fun, and smiles and there is warmth. And now some people want to take their ball and go home!!!

11/01 Is This Normal?

Quote From: mistyc

I want to say up that I think Shelita is a NUT CASE.  I'm sorry that is just how I feel.  Last night was Halloween and my husband and I had a WONDERFUL doling out the candy to our dozens and dozens of trick or treaters.  We had lady bugs, and football plays and princesses galore.  I don't think God was frowning on me as I dished out Hershey Bars and Tootsie Pops to the children of my neighborhood.  For the past two Christmases my husband and I have participated in a program in which we buy Christmas gifts for a child who's parrent is incarcerated in a state prison.  Last year my husband went out and bought a few gifts for our unborn daughter ( I was eight months along) because he loved her and he didn't want her to feel left out!!!

It doesn't matter what the exact day of Christ's birth is, it only matters that we honor his birth and we try to follow everyday.

Thank you...really.  I'm not Christian, but I used to be and I cannot see how Christ would object to giving kids a day of fun and pretending!  A day that is all about kids and having fun and playing a part and getting a sugar buzz...I honestly always thought, if Jesus was alive today he'd probably be handing out full sized candy bars to all the kids! LOL

11/01 Is This Normal?

Quote From: elffie

Jetta, I have to ask, (even though you probably won't give me an answer) do you decorate for Christmas?

I bet you do.  And sure, you'll say that the real meaning of Christmas is about Jesus' birth (even though he wasn't born in December) and is about family and loving one another.........where do you think those traditions started from?  Would you not decorate for Christmas the same way you do not decorate for Halloween?  Do you not get a tree and decorate it?  Do you not give gifts, or have wreaths, or sing Deck the Halls?  All of which are Pagan.

I guess I don't understand why you can't do one holiday because it's Pagan, but you can do others.  Is it because Jesus is involved?  That's why the early Christians did that, to convert Pagans.  So you see, you are celebrating the Pagan traditions, even if you don't call it that or see it that way, you are.

Have fun with your holiday planning Jetta.  It will be here before we know it.

I celebrate Christmas not only as a day to celebrate the birth of Christ (and yes I know it isn't his real birth) and because it is a time of giving and a time set aside to show our love and all. and the reasons why I do or do not celebrate have absolutely nothing to do with whether it is pagen or not, not once have I ever mentioned the word pagen in my postings until now. My children are taught to love, honor and respect Christ as well as others, and this is what Christmas is all about for me and I do not decorate for Halloween, I decorate for fall, won't see witches, and ghosts in my home, sorry if that offends any one, I celebrate according to what I feel is appropaiate for me and my family, not what others do or think.

Again, sorry if I am offending but pagen or not, it is not what I base my celebrations on. And besides, wht's the big deal if I don't get into Halloween, how is that hurting any one?  As A Christian I choose how I celebrate and what consists in my celebrations and I have made up my own traditions as well during the holidays. My kids decorate the tree themselves wih their ornaments and we sit around the tree reading Bible Stories and reinacting some of those stories, we also pray before we open gifts and eat and of course before Christmas, we have our traditions that involve helping others, Not the traditional ways of celebrating, but our way and that's the way the holidays should be, a family event, celebrating life as it is for us.

My holidays are not based on pagen or not, they are based on how I feel to celebrate and Jesus is a part of every celebration, in fact, we have a bday party for Jesus, might be wrong for the pagen tradition but the holidays are public holidays therfore family's may choose how to celebrate, That is the the good thing about the USA, we get to choose our religions and the way we choose to celebrate, no one can control that  for us. I choose what I like and discard what I don't like as I am sure everyone does. I am sure you don't like the idea of Christ being in Christmas so you don't celebrate Him, I don't like the idea of witches on my window, therefore I don't decorate with witches, tradition or not, pagen or not, has nothing to do with how I celebrate.

Satanism and Paganism are very very different religions...but even Satanism isn't a horrid religion.  I agree with a lot in Satanism and I agree with a lot in Paganism...along with some parts of Christianity.
