Do you know someone whose behavior is always making you raise an eyebrow? Dr. Phil helps his guests distinguish what's normal and what's not. Kelly says she’s tired of her husband, Scott’s, jokes. She says they’re inappropriate, obnoxious and rude. Scott admits that his jokes can be sexual in nature, but he loves being the life of the party. Will Kelly loosen up, or does Scott need to tone it down? Then, Vicki fears that she’s dying and visits the doctor at least once a week. Her husband, Harvey, says she needs to stop worrying about her health or she’s really going to make herself sick. Is it all in Vicki’s head, or does she really have a reason to be afraid? And, Shelita refuses to celebrate the holidays because she says they’re pagan festivals. Her sister, Akea, says she contradicts herself by accepting presents. Will Akea be able to embrace her sister’s decision, or is Shelita being unreasonable? Plus, Dr. Phil and Robin kick off their participation in the 2006 Toys for Tots holiday campaign! Join the discussion.

11/01 Is This Normal?

Quote From: jahluvs

She is right, however she still has more research and studying of the Bible to do if she truly wants to please God.  I don't believe she was being judgmental toward anyone else, just stating what she believes the bible to say. Eph. 5:10, 11: "Keep on making sure of what is acceptable to the Lord; and quit sharing with them in the unfruitful works that belong to the darkness, but rather, even be reproving them." Remember, the Bible does say that the wages of sin are death.

The bible tells us not to take part in "traditions of man" or to be making festivals of seasons, etc.

A genuine love for Jehovah [God and a strong desire to be pleasing to him will help a person break free from unchristian practices that may have had emotional appeal. A person who really knows and loves Jehovah [God does not feel that by shunning practices that honor false gods or that promote falsehood he is in any way deprived of happiness. Genuine love causes him to rejoice, not over unrighteousness, but with the truth. See 1 Corinthians 13:6. (information taken from Reasoning from the Scriptures)

We don't need traditions of society to dictate to us how or when to be giving or kind. Charity begins at home and occurs on a daily basis as is needed -our neighbors, our friends, our families, and others with whom we come in contact.

As for me, I would much rather put my efforts toward pleasing God rather than man. Man has no power over my eternal life, but God does!

I leave you all with this thought:  The bible tells us that if we continue seeking the truth, it will find us.

The bible tells us not to take part in "traditions of man" or to be making festivals of seasons, etc.

Well...that's dull...I don't understand the point of that rule...you'd think God would like to see people celebrate together and get along and smile and treat each other nicely...

mete and mote???

Quote From: saemae

Shellita, I found it interesting how you said us Christians would be judged for celebrating Christmas.  Ever read a little book called the Bible?

"Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged; and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then thou shalt see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.

THAT, my dear, is in the book of Matthew.  I'm not half as worried about the judgement I face because I bought my kid a Barbie this year than the judgement YOU face for judging me.  You are just a cheapskate that used a bunch of propoganda websites to back your frugal nature.  The websites you are looking on are ALSO the ones that showed a bunch of kids in a blurry photo worshipping Satan because they read Harry Potter, and that was proven to be a HOAX provided to these "well-meaning Christians" BY Harry Potter fans to make zealot Christians look stupid because they thought Harry Potter was a Satanist guidebook.

So, pardon me if I'm not a jerk like you.  I'll let my kids have the magic of Christmas for a little while longer.  I'll let my kids dress as princesses and trick or treat in our neighborhoods.  I'll let the kids look for plastic eggs in my mother's front yard.  I'll give my husband a big box of chocolates in a cardboard box.  And I WON'T worry about you being a world-class hypocrite by slamming your relatives and their beliefs, all the while waiting for your handout.  You are a real piece of work.

I'm not real sure what a mote is but I went thru the Harry Potter thing with some other parents at my son's school. Also, he learned to read really well by reading his favorite books which were the RL Stein Goosebumps books!!! They would not allow them in his school library, but he read all of them. (they did have a book on Alfred Hitchcock movies -now the "birds" always freaked me out a little. You wouldn't have to spend a lot of money for X-mas. Build a snowman, make hot chocolate, sing the music , make cookies and  spend time with family and your kids. Watch a Christmas movie together. A funny one. I hope her child gets to go to her sisters house. It's OK to have your own thoughts but let your child have a little magical time and fun even if you think its all evil and  Pagan . Who really cares -the important thing is to connect with others and  enjoy the time of year in some way. Otherwise when your child grows up they will rebel by working for Hallmark greeting cards or something with a side job as a x-mas elf at the Dept. Store and  they will celebrate everything including ARBOR day to make up for what they missed.

ooops, forgot about one...

that is not condemned, and that would be the celebration of marriage.

My brother feels this way

I have a brother who has a belief similar but he is also a lot of fun and celebrates birthdays with gifts always. But Geez, you make me want to go out and rent "Bad Santa" again!!. It has no redeeming social value whatsoever, but  my sister and I laughed so hard when we watched it last  X-mas visit from her. ( the unrated version) :>)  Who decided God doesn't like celebration and fun? I know there are varied degrees of strictness in religion and we need to respect those who are different.  Maybe God works thru people to share their talents and possessions                with others and not be scrooges and stingy either. People can be unloving by not having fun too.

The Bible, in my belief, is the Word of God. So it goes to say that God has said so. But that doesn't mean we aren't to have fun -just a different sort of fun than what secular society deems as "fun".

11/01 Is This Normal?

Quote From: purplepenny

I just don't undertsand this...

Holidays bring people together, they create a feeling of unity and of community celebration. Why would someone reject that?

It's so sad to me. Here we have this time of year where everyone just has fun, and smiles and there is warmth. And now some people want to take their ball and go home!!!

I reject it because, as a Christian, I'm to be in the world, but not of the world. We aren't supposed to partake in the celebrations of the world, but only those of the Lord. Those are my beliefs........respect them as I respect yours, whether I understand them or not.

bringing people together, unity and community, fun, smiles, and warmth, my household/family has all this during the holidays as well as other times of the year so hubby and I must be doing something right, traditional or not, we are blessed.

Gotta get back to work, Anna is staying to herself to day for some odd reason, usually a sign she is coming down with something, let's hope not.

I agree, there is only one holy day to commemorate

Quote From: jahluvs

that the bible tells us to remember and that is of Christ's death. He said to remember him in that way. Other traditions, festivals, celebrations are condemned in the bible.

My family (and my church) commemorates the death, burial and resurrection of Christ every Lord's day (Sunday, first day of the week), as the bible dictates (Acts 2:42, Acts 20:7).  Worshipping idols and other gods are condemned, but celebrating national "holidays" are not condemned in the New Testament (the Christian's rule book, if you will, as the "old law" has been nailed to the cross and we are under the new covenant (Colossians 2:14; Hebrews 8:6-13; Hebrews 9).

1 Corinthians, chapter 8 is a good book that deals with the conscience--and gives some perspective on the mature (and novice) Christian view of idolatry.  Paul told the church at Corinth (all Christians, of course) that there were those among them who knew that their was only one God based on their Jewish upbringing.  Idol gods meant nothing to them; therefore, if they ate meat that was originally sacrificed to idols, it was no big deal because they did not recognize their existence.  But for those converts who came out of idol worship, it would be a tremendous sin against their conscience, not only to eat, but to see others eat as well.  "Their conscience, being weak," he says, "is defiled."

Followers of Christ have no fear of paganism or idol worship, because it is not a part of their reality.  Therefore, just like the 1st Century Christians who were free to eat meat sacrificed to idols as long as it did not defile their conscience, we too are free to celebrate "holidays", as long as we don't elevate them to "holy" status.  Christ came so that we might have life, and that we might have it more abundantly! (John 10:10).  We must be careful not to bind things on our fellow Christians that the bible does not.

Pagan or Christianity

Shelita, did the research herself...... omg.... Literally Oh My God! Help that poor poor woman.  Yes, Constantine established Christmas, Easter etc near pagan holidays.  the purpose was NOT to worship pagan beliefs but to assit the conversion of pagans to christianity.  if we celebrate christs birth on december 25th, and it isn't really his birthday.  do you think he sits upon his throne and says HOW DARE THEY CELEBRATE MY BIRTH ON THE WRONG DAY!!!!  No, I believe our love and faith warms his heart and knows that it is a celebration of his birth.  The dates of Jesus life were not written as specifics.  And yet we still have faith.  Shelita, lacks faith and presents judgment.  Not her job.  God's job to sit in judgement.  Small children playing dress up on halloween is not celebrating evil.  It's small children running from house to house asking for candy.  Period.  Now, those who are in to Pagan rituals may be doing that on that night.  But that is their choice to recognize it as a pagan holiday.  A 5 year old only knows Woo hoo, its Halloween and I get candy!  So, if you raise them to love and honor God ON ALL DAYS!  it doesn't matter if we have the date right, only the intention.
