Parents want the best for their children, but what’s the best way to educate them? Dr. Phil’s guests face off in a debate about whether to school, homeschool or unschool. Dana and her husband, Joe, call themselves radical unschoolers. They say education happens as a side effect of life, and they don’t believe in tests, curriculums or grades. Are their three kids learning what they need to know? Then, RaeAnn says public schools are death traps and wants to homeschool her children. Her husband, Steve, says their kids are safer at school than they are at home. Can this couple reach a compromise? Plus, Nicole feels like an outcast at 26. She says she hated being homeschooled, and couldn’t relate to other kids. Share your thoughts here.

11/24 Great School Debate

Quote From: penny_lady

I am sad this board died out.

I learned a lot here ladies...it has helped a lot in my decision to home school my daughter.

And I thought I would also give an update on my babysitting...it's going well and I love my niece and nephew a lot, but man, it has solidified my position on day care...that's for sure!

Me too Penny, I have really enjoyed most of our conversations. :)

Glad to hear the babysitting is going well for you and that it has helped solidify your position on day care.

I have great news as well! My ex husband has granted permission to homeschool our child. This is our year to do some much needed remedial work in addition to his 9th grade credits lessons.

*There's lots of hard work ahead of us, wish us luck!*

That is good news...and if he doesn't like the results,  then he can change his mind, but might as well at least give it a go huh?

That is really great news!

I have more good news, some on topic, some off. Emma is going to be the flower girl at my brother's wedding on Thursday. She is going to be such a doll. I will share a pic.

And Emma is now starting to read!!! Not anything super fancy, but she is learning the sounds of each letter and is making real attempts at reading some words. Her favorite letters are "P" and "G"...LOL....it's so fun and exciting.  I am dismayed, her cousin Tyler doesn't know any letters yet...but Emma is having fun helping him learn. It's hard to move along with Emma when Tyler is farther behind than her...another disadvantage to watching someone else's child.

Yeah, I check here about once a week, and see no new posts...
But it's been a stimulating conversation.
Take care all.

Sorry it has taken so long to get back to this. I've been swamped. :)

The flower girl role sounds beautiful. I bet she was a doll. And how awesome is it that she's beginning to read. Even better that she's excited.

Oh hey, that's cool. I just happened to check over here just now. What a weird coincidence...lol

I thought of this board because I was explaining on another board my reasons for homeschooling and I must say, it made me feel for those of you here who go under attack for your choice when your reasons are solid.

Frank is already chipping away at a timeline program he is making for Emma's education. Basically it will be a world timeline that Emma can enter in information as she learns it about any topic. If she learns about the discovery of a planet she can enter that in. If she learns about the discovery of a disease she can enter that in. She can enter in if a cure is found. She can enter in periods of time, such as the dark ages. And you will be able to zoom in and out of this timeline in order to get a good idea about what was going on in different parts of the world and in different subjects (math, science, social events, historical events, natural disasters etc) at the same time.

It's going to be great! i am very excited about it. He is hoping to have the whole thing ready in a few years...if he works on it now and then.

You aren't kidding!  I'm finding this out too - and they aren't the least bit shy about expressing their disapproval. A few people surprised me with support though.  I can't wait until the other kids start back to school and people realize mine isn't going back.

BTW, Penny, what do you tell people?  Ultimately, what IS your reason.  I can't give a short answer. For me, this started because of a few horibble teachers .  As time went on, I ended up with so many reasons  - now,  I don't know which one to give LOL!

I definitely concur with the above for how it all *started*.  But for why we continue...

It's because we're so blissfully happy and things are going so well, and well, interrupting it will make me pout <G>

Epilepsy foundations

The Epilepsy Foundatin of America needs to live up to its name and start leting the country know about epilepsy. Seeing cancer, aid, autisum all taking action is frustrating.

To many people are suffering from epilepsy, I suffered from seizures for 21 years.

I have done charity work for The Epilepsy Foundation of Western Ohio, their excuse for not advertising makes them sound like a bunch of epileptics. They are affraid to advertise for they feel that epilepsy is not known well enough. In my opinion that is why you need to advertise to help people learn about this medical problem and seek support.

11/24 Great School Debate

First, I want to point out that there is a HUGE difference between unschooling and homeschooling.  IMO unschooling should be illegal.  I homeschool my 2 children and we go through a private school in Baltimore.  I have 24/7 access to education councilors and to teachers who all have Bachelor degrees in education.

I have a whole support team behind me when I am educating my children.  I have a lesson manual and all the books, workbooks and materials that I need in order to teach my children at home.  We have a set schedule to keep up with, and testing dates to meet.  I take homeschooling very serious.

Unschooolers teach at whim and most unschooled children ARE behind acedemically.

Please do not get the two confused.  Unschoolers give us legitimate homeschoolers a bad reputation.
