(Original Air Date: 12/1/06) Do you ever look in the mirror and think, "How did I get this big"? For Angelique, 28, her compulsive eating is becoming deadly. She is morbidly obese at over 500 pounds, is afraid to go to restaurants because she says she'll break chairs, has to sleep sitting up, and her mother is raising her daughter because Angelique is too big to care for her. How is Angelique literally poisoning herself? Robert Reames, trainer and nutrition expert, makes a surprise visit to Angelique's house to clean out her cupboards and get her started on her weight-loss journey. Then, DeeDee weighed 750 pounds when she first appeared on Dr. Phil. It took five men, a van equipped with a special lift, a motorized wheel chair and multiple oxygen tanks to get her to the stage. Have things changed for her, and are her children still trapped in her web of guilt? And, Jennifer lost 162 pounds but was so ashamed of her body because of excess sagging skin, that she could barely look in the mirror. Dr. Phil arranged for her to meet with top Beverly Hills plastic surgeons. Did surgery change Jennifer's view of herself? Talk about the show here.

Find out what happened on the show.

Re: Xylitol

Quote From: anon_slc

Xylitol is a natural occurring sweetener found in many fruits like strawberries, pears and plums.  Pure Xylitol is a white crystalline substance that looks and tastes like sugar. On food labels, Xylitol is classified broadly as a carbohydrate and more narrowly as a polyol. Because Xylitol is only slowly absorbed and partially utilized, a reduced calorie claim is allowed: 2.4 calories per gram or 40% less than other carbohydrates.

Xylitol has 40% fewer calories and 75% fewer carbohydrates than sugar and is slowly absorbed and metabolized, resulting in very negligible changes in insulin. About one-third of the Xylitol that is consumed is absorbed in the liver. The other two-thirds travels to the intestinal tract, where it is broken down by gut bacteria into short-chain fatty acids.

Chemically speaking, Xylitol is not actually a sugar, but a sugar alcohol. It differs from other sweeteners such as sorbitol, fructose and glucose because the Xylitol molecule has five, instead of six, carbon atoms. Most bacteria in mouth are unable to make use of such sugars. This is one reason why Xylitol helps prevent cavities.

Xylitol tastes and pours like regular sugar, but provides 40% fewer calories.  Xylitol mixes and dissolves readily and is heat stable, making it the ideal sweetener for hot beverages, baking and other cooking applications unlike artificial sweeteners.

Xylitol looks, feels, and tastes exactly like sugar, and leaves no unpleasant aftertaste. It is available in bulk and many forms.  It can be purchased at health food stores and over the internet.  Xylitol was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1963.

Hope it helps!

It also gives you the volcanic squirts!

Natural alternatives are Stevia and Agave nectar, both available at healthfood stores.  I prever Agave; it has a low glycemic index and tastes good.

Angelique you really need to change your ways!

Stuffing yourself with food is not the answer to your problems.  When you go to a Chinese resturant you don't need to eat until you're ready to throw-up.  When you go to McDonald's you don't need three double cheeseburgers, a large fry, a large soda, and three sugar cookies.  You are getting very little nutrition from that.  That is also a fact with Pizza Hut too, you don't order one pizza, you order two, and two bottles of soda, and all those appitizers.
