Kids across the country are playing pranks and harassing teachers. Tericka, a high school science teacher who loved her job, lived in fear of her scandalous past catching up with her and getting her fired. Students eventually found out about her shocking past and the news spread throughout town like wildfire. Are other teachers taking her side, or do they feel her punishment was justified? How can she move forward? Then, Anna, an assistant principal, was harassed on the Internet when two students created a fake MySpace page alleging to be her. She says they completely attacked her character and need to be held accountable for their actions. Was this just a practical joke gone bad, or were these students out for revenge? Find out what Anna did to show these kids that some jokes just aren't funny. Could the mischief your kids get into end up costing you thousands of dollars? Talk about the show here.

Find out what happened on the show.

12/06 Teacher Troubles

Quote From: iheartmusic13

im watching this episode right now. the teacher who is complaining about the fake myspace of her is so rediculous, i just had to join the site and post a message on this toppic. I'm a teenager, have a myspace page mysef, and have had MANY fakes made of me. I really think all this teacher wants is money.Taking the myspace page down would have been as simple as a few clicks to send a message to myspace customer service. Giving the kids detention would be completley understandable, but taking it as far as sueing them and the parents is totally uncalled for.

since this was done off school grounds. Also done on private time. The school isn't liable to dole out punishment. The jury will decide what is the right recourse. There is a few factors to consider

1.) motive- They hated her because they were punished by her numerous times. So revenge is a factor.

2.) time and place where the crime happened- like I mentioned it was in the privacy of their own homes on their private time 4 pages of character assassination and slander.

3.) age- both were 16 and 17 respectfully. old enough to know better. Yes I realize they are minors. However, slander and libel is a crime, regardless. There is penalties for it. whether or not the jury will enforce it. remains to be seen. By the time this hits trial, sometime next year one boy will be 18.

hmmm

i am a former student of the teacher that is sueing the students over myspace. The story made headlines in town several months before the airing of the tape. I wish people could keep in mind that there are always two sides to every story. Many details were left out of the story. I was shocked to see my former teacher on TV but as I heard the story I wasnt surprised. I do agree that students should be accountable for their actions but the lawsuit itself is based at the parents. Myspace is easily accessible from any computer even computers at school. Even though the site is supposedly blocked, I know ( Ive done it) there are many ways to work around this. There is no concrete evidence that the access to the site was at the homes of these students. Even so, as an administrator, that job entails the ability to monitor students and properly punish students for their actions. When is it appropriate to take parents to court? I think this just signifies that it is ok for teachers to take students to court when they feel students have misbehaved. When did we give students this much power over teachers and administrators? When do administrators start doing their job?  When did Myspace become a credible source? Most importantly, what exactly is going on to make students make such a hateful site about a teacher?? It has to stem from something. Every teacher has their critics, but why at such a huge magnitude?? Personally I know, she was my teacher at some point. I dont think it was appropriate for her to appear on Dr.Phil. Her appearance added fuel to the fire and possibly damaged her image more than any student made page could have.

I think the problem is that everybody just thinks that if they say "sorry" that everything is just magically supposed to be alright. Think about it? If you had spent your hole life living as a  professional and not making the dumb choices, making all the sacrifices that go with that, than only to have someone come along and thrash your name and everything that you stand for. I'm proud of her for bringing them to court. There are too many people that go through life believing that they can do anything to anyone and no-one will hold them responsible. It is long overdue and hopefully others will learn from this. It is unfortunate that it has come to requiring the help of the judicial system. Just remember this is the way that Parents and Students wanted it. If not they should have thought of that before they started brining teachers and administrators to courts! The bed has already been made.

Teachers only have responsiblity for students during school hours - not when the students are in the custody of their parents. During their 'home hours' the students should have been monitored by one or both of the two adults who are their principle caregivers. If the students had taken a gun to school would that be the responsibility of the teacher as well?

Computer use should be monitored. Put the computer in a public area of the home like the living room. Check the cookies and the history on the computer. Look at your child's MySpace pages. Most of all, teach your child that s/he WILL be held responsible for his/her actions - even actions from the virtual world of the Internet.

No one gets a free ride in this world and it's inhumane not to teach this to your children.

Thanks for speaking on behalf of teachers.  As a teacher, I am always surprised when parents blame everyone else except the child.  Even if you didn't monitor your child or couldn't, or they were older and did it somewhere else, it is still the child's responsibility.  It's not even all the parents.  By that age, they know exactly what they're doing.  They don't know the consequences  because parents aren't making sure their children know what consequences are.  It's just easier to let it go.  We are in an age of lazy parents.  Sure it hurts when your child messes up.  That's when you bite the bullet and make sure they understand what they've done.  I had to do that with my child and it was quite serious.  In fact, the law gave him ten times what he deserved.  The police officer, judge and lawyers all agreed it was ridiculuous what he had to suffer for the offense but we never once told him he shouldn't be punished or have to follow through with what he was given.  The judge apologized to us for having no opportunity to make the punishment fit the crime.  We suffered, but we are all better for having learned a tough lesson.  You mess up, you pay.  I do think the principal could certainly choose a better option as she has the power to do so.  An apology in front of the entire student body from both the child and the parents.  Written apologies to the principal from both child and parent and posted on the internet under myspace an apology and explanation.  The students should also post myspace warnings for all students that they too could suffer.  It's about time we started remembering that teachers and principals are educators not police officers.  Stop sending your children to school with no regard for the law or authority.  Stop sending children with no conscience or concept of consequence.  Do your job as a parent and we'll do our job as educators.  Then, if the educator messes up on their job they can be fired.  You as a parent, cannot.

12/06 Teacher Troubles

Quote From: idamag

I am so sick people saying it is alright for kids to do anything they like. When I was in grade school we knew what defamation of character meant. You add these kids prank to the incident that happened in Piper, Kansas, and people are devolving, getting dumber instead of smarter.

In Piper, Kansas, a high school class was given a paper to write. The teacher said plagarism would be an automatic failure. Several students turned in papers that were identical, word for word. The teacher investigated the internet and found where they had copied the work from. She failed them. They were on the football team. The parents, the coach and the school board acted against this teacher. Their consensus was that high school kids didn't know what the word "plagarize" meant. Doesn't say much for the intelligence level of that particular area, does it?

As they are getting ready to put you under anesthesia for surgery, ask yourself if your surgeon was one of those children who cheated his way through schooll.

What is so hypercritical about the attitudes is: It is okay for them to drive cars, use roadways, have cell phones, but they are just children. Bull.

I 100% agree with this.  Kids are not stupid, by far from it in fact because they have so much more access to information from a variety of ways that were never available even a few years before.  These kids knew exactly what they were doing and how much trouble it could get the teacher in in someone read it at face value.  They did in maliciously and purposfully and you can't tell me that they didn't know it was wrong.

I've read other comments about how teachers should get out of the job if they can't take the poor treatment and that the kids go through more than they do.  How do you know that? everyone was a child/teenager at one point and therefore have had our own problems or have our own problems in life. Don't you dare tell me we don't have heartaches because "we're older" that's bull.  As a newly graduated teacher, I chose this profession because I want to be able to relate to the students and make school fun and interesting for them.

Regarding the teacher who made a mistake in her past with the porn movies, that's something she will always have to live with but look at what she's done for herself now.  She's got a family and had respect from her school before the past came out.  I don't think she should be blamed for something that happened 15 years ago.  Everyone grows up and makes mistake that's what life is.  I would rather have someone who can say they screwed up and changed their life teach instead of someone who hasn't lived a day in their life and can't relate to what's going on in todays society.  There is no need for this poor teacher to have to go through what she has.  It's not like she is still doing movies or has for a number of years.  There are doctors who were strippers in order to pay their way through school, do we humiliate them, force them out of their job and distrust them with our bodies because of this? NO! It's not illegal to buy or rent these movies if you're of age and therefore even though it's not the most praised job in society it's still not illegal therefore she did nothing wrong.

When I see how educators are treated by society, I drag out my soap box. The person who said teachers should get out if they couldn't take the poor treatment is an example of societies messed up priorities. They will spend every Monday night watching a bunch of muscles crash into each other and it is okay to pay those masses of muscle 3 million a year each, but heaven help the teacher who wants to make enough he or she does not have to moonlight. Many of my friends are teachers and they don't have a full evening with their own children. They are busy with lesson plans and correcting papers. When the class has needs and the funding doesn't cover them, a lot of money comes out of the teacher's pocket.

To the person who made that boisterous remark: A teacher teaches because he or she is an idealist. They sure as h are not doing it for the money. How would you like to make $40,000 a year and put at least 2,000 of that back into your job? How would you like to be treated like a second class citizen? Teachers obviously care more about the kids than their parents do. It is the teacher who tries to instill a love of learning and values into the kids.

Summer comes and the kids get out of school. The teacher has to go back to school for CE's to keep her profession upgraded. Despite what you think, because you didn't even bother to learn what is real and what is not, teachers do not have 40 weeks and summers off.

And to rub salt into the wound, kids are not taught respect for teachers anymore.

Off the soap box now.

Role Models

Everyone makes mistakes!  It is not easy to become a teacher.  It takes hard work and dedication.  Teachers are not perfect and should not be expected to be perfect.   Yes, the teacher made some bad choices to earn money to pay her bills when she was young, dumb, and desperate; that doesn't mean she does not deserve to have, earn, and pursue her dreams through a professional career choice such as becoming a teacher.  She is a new kind of role model now for students, and any American that she is living proof that you can change your situation and fulfill your dreams.  The teacher needs to be forgiven for her past mistakes; she has made a new life for herself and her children, please don't take that away from her.  (I did not watch the show).   It is a shame that the children had access to her past mistake.  How did they get access to adult content material.  Who is responsible for that?  the parents? the school? now that is something to be ashamed of!
