Dr. Phil's guests are trying to convince him that they're not doing anything wrong. First up, Ty Beeson produces a video series where the homeless are encouraged to fight on camera and perform what some describe as demeaning stunts. Some critics say these videos could be responsible for inciting young men to commit heinous acts of violence, because Ty actually pays for the footage. You won't believe what happens when he comes onstage. It's a Dr. Phil first! Then, a woman whose homeless brother was beaten to death says what Ty is doing is dehumanizing and wrong. And, what do you think about the ban on models who are too thin? Drew is against the ban and says that it's not the fashion industry's job to keep an eye on the models, and skinny models promote a fantasy, not reality. A former model who was rejected by the industry at 6 feet tall and 135 pounds, disagrees with Drew, and she says her struggles to stay thin are still affecting her today. Then, Drew squares off with another model who was told she needed to lose weight. She turned a deaf ear and is now a model on Deal or No Deal. A heated discussion ensues, and Dr. Phil weighs in on these controversial issues. Share your thoughts, join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

Please stop dieting IF...

Quote From: mcneil42289

Dr. Phil I am amazed that that man actually thinks that skinny is in! My goodness I am 13 and I weigh around 114 lbs and 5 foot 4inches. You would think thats the average weight for a girl my age. Ha-ha. I am a softball player with really muscular legs. having models the size of coat hangers don't work for me . A pair of jeans don't fit  usually because  they are made for girls like that. As fast food restaurants have been getting bigger so has America so why cant our models get bigger too? I'm going to become a Famous actress I'm already getting turn down for certain roles in plays in my town. They say "You don't FIT for that role" what they are really saying " your too fat to have that role"  ( the nice way). I'm the biggest girl in my friends they are all dancers or way active in sports. (I'm not!) so some times i feel pressured in being thin. I think having models on the runway being the average Jane and Joe will make people feel better about themselves. I know I would. I have not eaten for a day or two before to look skinnier. All i look like is sick. If there was one thing that I could change about the runway is change there shape! If i was to ever buy something from the off the runway i would want it to fit. By having models look like the girl i saw on the street that is my size i could say "that would fit me i want to by that" Sadly not everyone sees that way.

You mention that you are a softball player with really muscular legs. I too, had the same type of build when I was your age. My parents were so concerned with how models looked, that I started dieting way too young and completely messed up my metabolism. 20 years down the road , when a Doctor finally told me that my dieting is what was messing me up, it was too late to undo the damage that I had done to my body by yo- yo dieting. IF you TRUELY do not over eat, and stay active it will all work itself out. My sons are both living proof of it. Don't let extremist  influence you.

You are right

Quote From: lavmack

I think the 'walking hanger'  model concept is ridiculous.  I don't want  to see how a garment looks on a hanger,  I want to see how it will look on me.  A person can pick out an item they think is great only to find out, when they try it on, it's not for them.  Or pick up something they think they'd never wear only to find out it's great on them.  So, how do you tell by looking at it on a hanger?

How dumb people must be to believe everyone would look good in those awful, shaggy garments like you said "Hanging from a hanger."  That is a very good way of describing it.

Who designs the clothes

This "designer" is such a phony, it make my stomach churn. I don't believe this post will be published, but I'm going politically incorrect and saying that the real problem with the fashion industry is that the designers are, for the most part, gay men who try to make their women look like 11-year-old boys. This has been going on since Twiggy. And this goofball is crying,"Woe is me...the fashion industry is being picked on."  He should be ashamed of himself for his position.

ultra thin models

dr. phil,

my co-workers and i are watching your show at this moment.  we do not feel the pictures of the models currently shown show the "true" ultra thin model.  please refer back to your topics of anorexia....that, we believe, are your ultra thin models.  the women shown appear to be your "typical" body type for a model.  the women who were removed from the show in madrid were so thin you could count their ribs and every vertebrae in their spine....now that is disgusting!!!  thank you and it was great to watch you remove that IDIOT from your show earlier.

eating disorders

Quote From: dupontb

My junior and senior years of high school, i suffered from anorexia and bulimia. It rips your life apart. Girls with eating disorders don't see what they are doing to themselves. Once you discover that you can lose weight, you are never satisfied wih your weight. I am 5-7 and i got down to 107 lbs. The way i got through it, was my xanga web site. there are tons of girls going through what you are. On this site girls would post thinspo of their favorite models and celebrities. It is obvious that girls look up to these people. i don't think that models should be banned or anything, but i think that they all shouldn't be stick thin. They should have more average sized people on the runway and billboards.

You could also control something such as your weight loss during a difficult time in your life.(stress of grades, friends, etc).  The support on your website gave you and others the exceptance that was needed.

he's in true denial!

I agree that the term "walking hanger" is ridiculous. Hangers don't wear the clothes people do. I agree that some people are born slim but what about those that aren't? For Drew Linehan to say that agencies don't tell people to lose weight, he is in denial. Because I watched episodes of Janice DIckerson and she told a model to lose 10 or 15 pounds if she wanted to be reprsented by her agency. This girl was thin but being African American she had curves. But the girl was thin. I feel that it does cause models to try dangerous methods like starvation and laxatives to lose weight. I totally agree with Dr. Phil when he said that someone will want to go but something that they have seen on someone their size and these designers need to stop designing for olive ol from popeye and paint a picture of someone with meat and potatoes on her plate.

Quote From: ddeahoper

I can't believe people really treat homeless people that way, that was awful ! I'm glad you got rid of him too. Those homeless poeple Do not deserve that, I was homeless once,  it was No fun at all.  I also Host the Homeless on a regular basis at our church, as a matter of a fact Does Anyone Know why people just Refuse to host them ?
I was so glad to see Dr. Phil throw that man off the set. I think it's a shame that people would take advantage of another human being like that. He said he was putting them to work. That's the cheapest labor I've ever seen. Total expoitation!!

Be Happy

Quote From: elysian_fields

I am 20 years old, 5'5" and 98lbs...technically underweight.  I have always been this way, yet feel that my peers look at me as if I try to emulate those models.  I am nearly daily accused of having an eating disorder, despite the fact that I eat nearly everything in sight.  This makes me extremely self-conscious.  I am perfectly healthy, but speaking from this POV, there is really no advantage to being this thin.  To many, I am "too skinny."  You can never please everyone, so just be happy and healthy.
I am the other end of the spectrum...technically overweight. I too have always been this way, and felt my peers make fun of me. I also was accused of over eating , not getting enough exercise, not eating the RIGHT foods, when I was your age. But I was perfectly healthy. NOT So Today, after years of dieting, exercise programs, and eating CERTAIN good for you foods. Today I am 50 years old obese and have lots of medical problems. IT WASN'T what I ate, how much I ate, how much I exercised...IT was what  acceptance that I was never going to be like a model, no matter what I did, because that was not my body style. Acceptance of Self and Each other is the Golden Key. So lets start with the ones most of us see...TV, Broadcasting, Magazines, etc.

12/12 Convince Me!

Quote From: dmmaas

I just wanted to say that we should be promoting health not weight in the fashion or any other industry. The man on the show asks where are the parents? Well, I have a 10 year old daughter and there is no way to shield her from every unhealthy image she is bombarded with in our society. She is a thin and healthy girl but still is left feeling like she isn't pretty enough and has low self esteem. I have started having discussions with her about society and how girls are perceived but I feel like I'm fighting a losing battle because of how saturated our culture is with  this idea of beauty that is impossible to attain. I suggest everyone go to www.campaignforrealbeauty.com it is startling to see how distorted the images are that fill magazines and billboards. If we really have any hope of fighting this we have to challenge companies to take initiative and do the right thing. Thanks!

YOU stop talking to your daughter about her own and the appearance of other girls.  Start talking to her about education, her future, and making money!  Tell her she's smart, not pretty.  Shift her focus from appearance to acheivement.

I have a daughter too, instead of talking about how pretty JLo, or Beyonce are, I talk to her about how these ladies are making money, supporting themselves and giving back through their talent.

Last I heard, (at least here in Ohio), you can't put a picture of yourself in your electric bill and expect to keep your lights on!  Teach your daughter how to pay her own bills!

Skinny models

First of all I want to say that I am glad that Dr. Phil has made it a point to address this tragedy.  I feel that the model industry has gotten out of control.  The fact that 98% of all models are under weight is a huge warning sign and that one model died. Come on if that isn't prroof enough that there is a problem with the standards that models are suspose to live up to then what is it going to take to convince the model industry.  Are there going  to have to be more deaths in order for them to get the point. I personally am enraged that Drew would have the nerve to say that the model industry does not actually expect you to lose 5 pounds in 1 day.  What kind of message is this sending to girls and even guys.  With the rise in eating didsorders now there needs to be something done. As far as the parents being responsible for making their child feel beautiful and setting good standards  for them I do agree but think back to when you were a teenager.  Did you really care what your parents told you. They have to tell you you are beautiful. They are your parents. They are not going to go up to their child and tell them that they are not adequate enough. It is also proven that almost everyone is influenced by the media more than anything else so with 98% of models being super skinny what kind of message do you think they a getting.  If you don't think there is a problem you need to do your research before you get on t.v. and defend the model industry because if you ask anyone who has had an eating disorder they will more than likely confirm that the media plays a huge role in their thinking and their decision to lose weight.
