Dr. Phil's guests are trying to convince him that they're not doing anything wrong. First up, Ty Beeson produces a video series where the homeless are encouraged to fight on camera and perform what some describe as demeaning stunts. Some critics say these videos could be responsible for inciting young men to commit heinous acts of violence, because Ty actually pays for the footage. You won't believe what happens when he comes onstage. It's a Dr. Phil first! Then, a woman whose homeless brother was beaten to death says what Ty is doing is dehumanizing and wrong. And, what do you think about the ban on models who are too thin? Drew is against the ban and says that it's not the fashion industry's job to keep an eye on the models, and skinny models promote a fantasy, not reality. A former model who was rejected by the industry at 6 feet tall and 135 pounds, disagrees with Drew, and she says her struggles to stay thin are still affecting her today. Then, Drew squares off with another model who was told she needed to lose weight. She turned a deaf ear and is now a model on Deal or No Deal. A heated discussion ensues, and Dr. Phil weighs in on these controversial issues. Share your thoughts, join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

Models

I am a mother of 2 girls and my 5 yr old daughter is already making comments that she is fat!  She has hardly no fat at all (maybe a tiny bit of baby fat).. she's average.  I work very hard to keep them from watching shows and movies that are unappropriate for a child.  So where does she get this idea that she's fat?  From sale ads, commercials, and just walking into stores and around the mall.  I once asked her why she thought that and she said.. well that woman is skinny.. so thats what I am supposed to look like. (pointing to a victoria secret poster at the mall).  I have consistantly since then have reassured my children on a regular basis that they are beautiful just the way they are.  I've always told them they were beautiful, but even more so now.  I tell them as long as they are healthy and they have a good moral personality, than that is what matters.. being super skinny is not what makes you beautiful!

I am 27 yrs old and I have watched women and girls my whole life try to conform to what the "Fashion Industry" and "Holleywood" think is Beautiful!  Most of them don't even take into consideration their height, bone structure, and muscle mass when making a decision if they are fat or not.  For 2 yrs, I assisted the Youth Pastors and we spent a lot of time with these teens on trips and etc and there is no doubt in my mind where they get their complexes from.  A parent can raise their child up with the best of compliments and to value thier inner self more than their outer and then they still look at these magazines and ads and commercials and think.. I wish I could look like that.  Why do they want to look like that?  Because society won't pay one bit of attention to you if you aren't up to their expectations and where does Society get their standards?  The Television, Ads, Magazines, and Commercials.

And something else that disgusts me is not only do our little girls gain complexes at such an early age.. So do our boys.  The majority of men will NOT give you the time of day if you aren't a certain size.  And if they do, they are still looking and staring at other women who are while their woman is standing right there.  Even after women are married, they are still trying to look a certain way just to keep their husbands from wanting another woman that is thinner or sexier.

It's a non stop battle and I only hope that some day, the media will start valuing a woman because they are healthy and have a great personality and make good decisions and THIS WILL START A MODEL THAT IS TRULY A MODEL.. NO MATTER WHAT KIND OF MODEL IT IS.  A MODEL IS A MODEL.. NO MATTER HOW YOU TRY TO COLOR IT AND PPL WILL TRY TO BE LIKE THEM.

12/12 Convince Me!

Quote From: iamvip

As far as I know, no one looks at a magazine or a tv show and suddenly develops an eating disorder.  These issues/illnesses run way deeper than than the media.

I totally agree with Dr. Phil's guest (Drew?), just because you aspire to do something doesn't necessarily mean that you CAN do it.  Look how many great athletes never make it professionally.  Or, look at all the "wedding singers" you see and hear in your town - - don't they sing as well, if not better than many of the people you hear on the radio?

Not everybody has IT.  So, don't blame the people that do have IT for your failures, illnessess.

To all the folks who look at magazines and wish they  looked like the models, how about you get a foster child or something and find a more useful focus in your life?!  Or, if looking at magazines makes you so sick, how about not looking at them!

I look at magazines and think about how I can adapt the latest styles to my proportions (I'm 5 feet tall).  How about all the short people start crying about the extra expenses we incur to find stylish clothes, pay full price for them and then have to pay almost as much to have them tailored?

The last time a checked, the media was not the greatest source for shaping and defining a life.  So don't depend on it to define yours!

But if anyone could figure out how to make yourself taller...they would be trying that too.

Everyone has a desire to some extent to FIT in and that is where our models, magazines, and media can be more helpful to society at large.

bumfights and ultra thin models

I have to say, I am really frustrated with what I saw on the show today. I feel this whole world is going to hell in a handbasket. This is absolutely sickening that someone would cash in on physically hurting weak and less fortunate people. Does anyone remember that there is a God, a higher power, overseeing all that happens or am I in a minority in this life these days. I feel hopeless sometimes when I see these topics because I feel like the world gets worse with every passing day. I know there are good people in this world but where are you???  I include myself in the "good" people category and it pains me to see that many people are not held accountable for their actions. Is this Ty idiot not breaking any laws here??? Encouraging fighting and putting someone else in the hospital does not break a law in this wonderful country.  In my opinion, the first amendment is so awfully abused in this country. There is no way on this earth our forefathers would have made these laws if they would have known how this world would be 200+ years later. I feel some of these amendments need to be modified so people like this idiot cannot cash in on sick and degrating things like this. It is insane!!!!!

The whole ultra thin model thing is just another frustrating part of life. The majority of women I know are always trying to lose weight. The reason for this is because they do want to look prettier and being pretty unfortunately is attached to being thin!!!! The fashion industry guy is just that "a guy." What does he know about being a WOMAN in the industry. NOTHING!!!!! He skirted around the issue and protected his job in the industry by not admitting there is a problem. These woman are supposed to be modeling fashions for women but they really are presented for men. Most of the beautiful women who are my friends average size 10's and would not have any interest in going to a fashion show as the girls wearing the fashions are not representing what they would like wearing them!!!! I think this point was made by Dr. Phil and I agree. These fashion shows as well as Victoria Secret Angel fashion show are put on for the men!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not the women. Again, everyone caters to the men in this world and gives them what THEY want to see. How is it that it is not important for the person who would actually be buying the fashions to associate with the models??? Plus sizes are a girl at 5'8" and 135 pounds. Well then I actually feel more fat than I did before the show!!!! That is ridiculous!!! Why is it then that when I go into a clothing store the majority of the sizes they are out of are 10's and 12's??? Because there are not enough 2's and 4's out there to buy the clothes!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't buy fashion magazines, nor do I watch fashion on TV. It's insulting to woman with figures. God created the woman's body to be different than a man's not to look like a man's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DISGUSTING

I think TY should be sooo ashamed of himself.  Obviously, he has no conscience or he wouldn't be making videos to line his pockets with cash by preying on homeless people.  Are there any more disgusting qualities than to USE people less fortunate than yourself to make yourself rich off their horrible circumstances???? And anyone, ANYONE who encourages this by buying his videos is just as bad, if not worse than he is.  It is a good thing that people like him WILL have to answer for their behavior.  Maybe, not in this life, but in the next!  SHAME

But whats Average/ Normal

Quote From: annastacia

I am not quite sure that banning super thin models is the answer or the only answer.  An eating disorder does not only have to do with self image but also with ones own self exceptance and ability to control something in ones own life.  Would I feel better if there were models out there that look more like average weight person, of course yes, however if a young person or adult already has lowself esteem and the need to be accepted either by peers or family then even the movie industry would have to change their weight requirement .  Point being there is something much more than just the image.

Aren't we all trying to figure that one out...

It Is Crazy

Quote From: tmckale

Oh my gosh!!!!!!!!!!  That jerk talking about modeling and how the girls were a walking hanger - I could slap him!!!  He could not even directly answer a question that Dr. Phil asked him.  He just kept making excuses.  I have struggled with my weight all my life.  I finally found Weight Watchers and lost 106 pounds and kept it off for 7 years.  After moving to a different state away from my family and not staying with the program I have put back on 50 pounds.  For that stupid man to think that girls want to be that way and starve themselves he is a total cuckoo nut!  My father always told me when I was a little girl that if I was fat I was nothing so what did I do ..... EAT!  I am 5'9" tall and weighed 134 pounds and was constantly told I looked like a skeleton.  That girl that was 5'11" and was 135 pounds and they told her she needed to lose weight - CRAZY.
Please take it from a guy.  Not all of us want a skeleton.  You were 5'9" and 134 lbs?  It sounds to me like you could have standed some more weight!  To all of you normal ladies out there I can only say that I am not unusual in this regard.  My wife (and reason for being) is a "full figured" woman.  Be proud of who you are and don't listen to men like the one on the show.

Role MODELS

I can't believe that anyone would say that models do not affect the youth in America and the world.  I know first hand how the media potrays beauty can affect a person.  My sister, a beautiful 19 year old girl, has been fighting an eating disorder since she was about 15.  Beauty, in the media, is shown as extremely thin and flawless.  What do you see as you check out at the grocery store, visit the doctors office or go to the mall?  You see photos of these Super Models!!  Perfectly thin.  My sister is 5'9 and 110 lbs.  She was given some information on a local modeling agency and decided to visit.  During her evaluation they made her get into a bathing suit and picked out all of her "trouble" spots.  All in all if she wanted to do anything other than commercials she needed to loose an additional 5 - 10 lbs and hit the gym.  She was also told she had a very small window of opportunity because she was out of the prime age, she was 17.  At that point her eating disorder turned a very sharp corner.  She began taking diet pills 4 times a day, drinking Red Bull, and eating 1/4 of one low fat poptart for breakfast, no lunch and 4 melba toast crackers for dinner.  She has developed colitus and has wrecked her intestines.  Her GI doctor told her it was from her diet pill and red bull intake.  She moved a few hours away to attend college and still battles with her weight and her inpulse to take diet pills to obtain this perfect body.  People say, where are the parents and what did they do wrong. We both come from a loving and very supportive home.  Our parents have always been involoved in our lives and have given us guidence.  No matter what your parents do or say if you are constantly bombarded with this thought of femanine perfection you want it.  I know, as a 26 year old mother of 22 month old triplets and a 10 year old step son I have a hard time with a positive body image.  You want to look like the beautiful people.  You know, perfectly inshape, perfectly thin, perfectly beautiful.  I work out and eat health.  I take care of myself but still see all of the imperfections and the media points out in movies, TV and print.  I only hope something changes for the better before my baby girl is a teen!!!

Baby,

I'm the BOMB!  I'm petite and beautiful and smart!  I've got more important things to worry about than my height.  In fact, I rarely think about it.  It's the way God made me!  Yes, it would be nice to purchase a nice outfit and NOT pay to have it tailored, but those are the cards I was dealt, and I deal with them masterfully.

I've got two businesses to run, AND two healthy, smart , confident children to guide.  And I know there are millions of people in the world in far worse shape than I.  Me,  worry about my height, or that last few pounds of baby fat - - NEVER!!!!!
