The holidays are here, but some households never experience “peace on earth.” Dr. Phil’s guests refuse to embrace the spirit of the season, and say Christmas is the worst time of the year! Joyce has been married to Rick for 27 years, and has hated the holidays for 26 of those years. She refuses to put up a tree, decorate her house or listen to Christmas carols. Rick says Joyce even flipped out when he tried to dangle some mistletoe over her head!  Joyce has succeeded in ruining her family’s joy, but is she about to destroy her marriage? Then, Val has 11 kids, but says her three daughters stop at nothing to wreck the holidays. One daughter even resorted to breaking her sister’s finger on Christmas day! The constant fighting has pushed Val to consider something drastic. And, find out what special event Robin and Dr. Phil hosted to help celebrate the true holiday spirit! Talk about the show here.

Find out what happened on the show.

12/13 Holiday Horror Stories

Quote From: macauleys

I won't be able to make it home for Christmas this year. Most of my family lives in Maryland and I am in Montana. I am so depressed. I am working but very poor. I can't afford gifts or even food. All of this hurts so badly because Christmas was a big deal at our home. Even though all of this is going on. I still plan to go to church on Christmas Eve.Something tells me not go give up hope or faith.I don't know what happend in people's lives that they don't want to celebrate the holidays. Maybe it is a lack of faith or hope. Perhaps a disappointment. However we are not guarnteed tomorrow so today is gift for God. I haven't given up. So your guests should not either. Life changes in a heart beat sometimes for the better.
I am so sorry you will not be able to go home for Christmas. I hope financially things will get better for you. You have a great attitude and I love your faith. You are so right. Everyday is a gift. Each day is a chance to change, grow and lift others. Even though you are having a hard time, you still have your faith. Keep it up!

12/13 Holiday Horror Stories

well i cant wait to see what makes your guests so naughty at this time of year dr phil ! but i have my own what was suppose to be a bad christmas for me but i turned even it into a good one, my second wife had a lond ongoing feud with my younger sister for many years,it got so bad they couldnt even get along with each other long enough to sit and have christmas dinned at my mothers, my wife wouldnt budge in her set ways, and i respected that, this one year tho it just so happened i was out of work just a bit before christmas, our son was 4 years old,it was all i could do to cover christmas for him and get my wife a little something too, so we wernt able to get a turkey no ham, nor any of the other trimmings for christmas day dinner, all we had to eat that day was a bologna sandwitch, well i really wanted my wife and sister to burry the hatchet just not in each others heads, hehehehe, but they were set 8in there ways so i respected that, well my wife wanted me to go over to moms and retrive some good holiday food and return home with a ready meal  lol, well im just as set in my ways as well, i went in the kitchen found something good to prepare for our 4 year old son got the bologna and mayonase out and made us a nice holiday bologna sandwitch for christmas day, and as i sat there at the table giving thanks to god that i atleast had that to eat and to please bless it for us, it hit me like a ton of bricks, there were in fact many people who didnt even have a bologna sandwitch to eat that day, my wife and my sis made up after that holiday, i dont know if it were the fact that my wife saw that i was just as happy with bologna as i would have been with all the turkey - ham - and nice trimmings or what, but i didnt let it keep me from having a good day to share with her and my son, and remembering this day was truley the lords day, and i knew eating a bologna sandwitch did not equal him being nailed to a cross so i may live with him one day soon,

12/13 Holiday Horror Stories

Quote From: mswing10

I love it too.  The whole Jesus story is a bit far fetched for me, but I do like the thought of celebrating love and family.  The holidays are for everyone!
where do you think this love you speak of comes from?

Holiday Horror Stories

Did anyone even ask the people if they know Christmas is about the birth of Christ?

Seems they were all in it for the lights and bows. That's sad.

To each his own

Christmas is for those who WANT to celebrate it!

Those who don't shouldn't!

Those who do, should!

Those who do, shouldn't force Christmas on those who don't!

Those who don't shouldn't force their non-desire on those who do!

If my s/o didn't like Christmas I'd just take him out of the scenario, insist he keep his negative attitude to himself and find something else to do on the holidays without me...because I enjoy the holidays and I am going to celebrate em!

To me it is like anything else...it takes compromise!

If you love each other, you compromise...

Those who won't compromise care more about thinking themselves right than the people they profess to love!

Those who hate the holidays, check out of em then...and keep your mouths shut!

Those who love the holidays, enjoy them...and keep your mouths shut!

Let love lead the way and you will get through it!

Myself, I celebrate the holidays...but I also celebrate everyday I am alive, good, bad or indifferent...you get one shot to be you...you can choose to enjoy it...or suffer through it!

It is up to you!

Well said.

Quote From: purplepenny

(First off, I'm an atheist and I celebrate Christmas.)

Secondly sounds like one of two things is happening here. Either you are lying to yourself about how you ACTUALLY behave. OR your live around complete ass****s.

I cannot imagine being rude to someone who is honestly being respectful of my joy and my celebration.

I CAN however imagine someone pouting and being negative and then going off pretending they did nothing wrong.

I agree. Well said.

I am also an atheist that celebrates all the Christian holidays as it is my culture. It's all about family. Whether you believe in god or not it all started because of the birth of a baby and the celebration that ensued. I don't believe in the divinity of all the hoopla, but the in the 2000 years of traditions that followed. Merry Christmas.

Tell 'em girlie

Quote From: kleesun

Wait--Joyce has been fuming for 26 years over an ugly shirt??  I thought she'd at least have had some sort of major tragedy, like the lady who posted the first message about losing her baby at Christmastime.  THAT would spoil Christmas.  An ugly shirt is nothing.

Get over yourself, woman.  If somebody buys you something and you chew them out and take it back--duh, they're not going to want to try to get you presents any more.  If I reacted like that to every off-base present I'd ever gotten, I'd have killed myself a long time ago.

Oh Honey you need to come sit by me!!!!!!  I dare anyone to show me a person that hasn't gotten a gift they hated.  To me that is just part of the fun!  I also thought that this was going to be a story about horrible tragedy, like she got raped on Christmas Day or someone died.  Getting an ugly sweater is NOTHING

Sounds almost as though Joyce could have been featured in the "spoiled and entitled" show a couple of weeks back. SHEESH!!! Grow up, lady!!! Based on the promos, I, too, thought that a major tragedy (e.g., losing a family member) had occurred. But a present that the recipient disliked??

Merry Christmas

Quote From: nessahope

Christmas is all about the birth of Our Lord and Savior. Listen to Mary did you know by Clay Akins I think it is. I heard it the other day. I am one who has a problem with the holidays because I suffer for depression. This time of year really brings it out. I don't know why. Anyway, since becoming a christian, I have gotten alot better. This song really opened new things in my heart. I can't explain it, just give it a listen........ God Bless and Merry Christ-Mas Nessa
I'm glad you are starting to feel better. Whatever works for you is a good thing. Christmas is all about family, and love and warmth. One doesn't need to believe in god to love the holidays because it's a part of the culture we belong too. Another part of the culture we come from is freedom.Freedom of thought, conscience, and religion, that includes freedom from religion. Have a very Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year, lots of Valentines, and chocolate at Easter.
