The holidays are here, but some households never experience “peace on earth.” Dr. Phil’s guests refuse to embrace the spirit of the season, and say Christmas is the worst time of the year! Joyce has been married to Rick for 27 years, and has hated the holidays for 26 of those years. She refuses to put up a tree, decorate her house or listen to Christmas carols. Rick says Joyce even flipped out when he tried to dangle some mistletoe over her head!  Joyce has succeeded in ruining her family’s joy, but is she about to destroy her marriage? Then, Val has 11 kids, but says her three daughters stop at nothing to wreck the holidays. One daughter even resorted to breaking her sister’s finger on Christmas day! The constant fighting has pushed Val to consider something drastic. And, find out what special event Robin and Dr. Phil hosted to help celebrate the true holiday spirit! Talk about the show here.

If I was Rick I would still have gotten my wife a gift. I would have, each year, donated $300 in her name to an abused womens shelter.

12/13 Holiday Horror Stories

You do know you have a choice in being annoyed by radio ads right?

And holidays are just special days. I AM nice all 365 days of the year...but this is a day where everyone decides to celebrate together.

I'm sorry about your father.
Yes I know I can just turn the dial - but then every station is playing the same thing.  I end up using my CD's more than radio.  And thanks for the comment about daddy - really tough the first year 10 years ago and not any easier

Christmas Blues

Hi I normally don't do this but I just needed to vent I guess. I'm living in a apartment which I hate I always dreamed of having a home but that won't happen. Also wanted a SUV and to be able to go to Hawaii for my honeymoon. I get so discouraged seeing that others are able to have some of their dreams come true but it seems nothing goes right for me. Now since 2 weeks before Easter I am raising my grandson whom I love dearly and we are just scraping by on social security. Now here its Christmas and I don't know where I am going to get gifts for him he is at a age 15 who says he understands but I know he doesn't.

My point being that there are women out there with out loving caring giving husbands....since his wife won't take his gift, there are women out there who can take his gift, with both hands, and true thankfulness.

Well, I'm an ipod freak. I don't listen to the radio ever.  TV ads don't bother me, they are visually interesting and usually have some kind of Holiday music...I ignore the "stuff" and just look at the pretty part! LOL

wow

Hello,  Hope you all are doing good!!   Anyway  I think everyone should enjoy Christmas and  not  mess it up for others. That do enjoy  it!    Why would anyone want to mess up Christmas for someone else! Thats so sad!!  Christmas is a time for joy, being happy and shareing Jesus and gifts with each other!  Its a time to show love for each other.    Forget all your worries and troubles!  Do something nice for that loved one!!   Christmas is all about Jesus and his birth!! I pray that there will be more love in this world and for all to have a safe and marry christmas!!!   I also pray that others will be more giveing and careing to each other!!!

draya001's reply

Quote From: flthomcat

Wow, how sad. I hope your attitude improves because you are carrying around too much frustration and anger.

And those bell ringers you hate so much are helping the poor...all those pennies nationwide add up to millions that go to kids and families that have little. God bless them for what they do.

I believe if you would celebrate the TRUE meaning of the holiday you would find peace and joy. Giving back to others will make you feel WONDERFUL. The more our family does for others, the happier we are.

Don't buy into the commercialism. If you do, it's your choice. We buy gifts for the kids and family because we WANT to. We like the smiles and the close family times together. There are no fights, no complaints...just smiles, laughs, talking, lots of good eats and a chance to be ONE in celebration of a great event...the birth of Christ. We attend mass as a family and help out at a local food pantry that feeds the poor of our city.

If you were to take the time to study Christ, you would know that he was a wonderfully caring soul. I'm not telling you to believe he is the Son of God (that's YOUR CHOICE), but it would be great for you to study him to see what is so special about the Christmas season to many of us who DO try to follow the teachings of Christ.

God bless. I was once a disinchanted Atheist. I walked around with a big brick on my shoulder. Now, as a practicing Catholic, I am at peace. And I am a much happier and more giving person. The world benefits from happy people. I hope you get there someday.

Enjoy your holiday. It's yours to celebrate it as you choose since only God is your judge.

Thank you for your reply to my Christmas peeves.  I do carry around a lot of frustration and anger,  and with what I've been through in life, there is little wonder.  Other things I carry around are agoraphobia, partial paralysis from multiple strokes, Seasonal Affective Disorder, and a childhood that rivals anything that you've seen on Dr. Phil.

I do hate the bell ringers.  I don't hate that they help people.  I just think you can catch more flies with honey than vinegar, and right now they're so sour they pucker me halfway down my digestive tract.  I don't know how they act in your part of the country, but they are down right rude around here.

I'm not a Christian.  That doesn't mean that I don't celebrate the wonder of this beautiful world, and all the wonderful people and things in it.  And it surely doesn't mean I don't give help.  I help the people God puts in my path, sometimes even to my own detriment.  I don't cop out by donating to charity or tithing.  I believe that good acts need to be intensely personal, not random or impersonal.  It sounds like you have a wonderful and generous family and that you all are on your best path to enlightenment.

I don't buy into the commercialism.  I get bombarded by it to the point I can't go out of my home.  Right now, I haven't been outside the house for over a week.

I have studied Jesus, reading The Bible in entirety over seven times, and also reading all the Gnostic Gospels, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and other ancient texts.  I consider him a spiritual and enlightened teacher who has imparted much wisdom.

I am not an Atheist.  Many people assume this, wrongly.  I am a very spiritual person, but my spiritual realm is mostly Native American, with a liberal mixing of Buddhism, and some leavening of Judaism.  Like I said -- Jesus was a Jew, not a Christian.

Thank you for your kind words.  I hope you and your family enjoy your Christmas and happiness and good fortune in the coming year.

12/13 Holiday Horror Stories

Quote From: afraid

a lie? not to my child he knows jusus died for him----if your not with my crowd its becouse we dont know each other, not becouse im against you-----if you dont like shopping stay home as i do then a 3 month commercial wont really matter------- you should get down on your knees and thank god you have never needed the salvation armys help, they were a god send to me in my time of need--------stop hopping through hoops if it tires you out----------get a tree with the roots wraped and plant it after christmas the trees do come that way if you only look, or you can get a fake tree as we have---------have your gifts wraped at the stores most do have gift wrapers avalible if you just look then you dont have to have the mess------use your better judgement when buying your kids gifts after all you know whats best for them--------refuse to have bad words with any family member after all it takes two to fight just walk away--------scense we arnt really certin just when jesus was born and the churches long ago decided to hold his birth day at this time and it seems jesus dosent really mind all he asks is to remember he lived and died for us and thats whats important i cant see any reason for you not to go ahead and have a wonderful MERRY CHRISTMAS , god bless you you seem to have thought of every reason to not enjoy it so i tried to find you a few to try to help you enjoy it a bit better, im not poking fun at you in any way hope you dont take it that way, enjoy your family and the time you have to spend with them thats what counts.

Thank you for replying to my posting.  It's refreshing that you make the attempt to tell your children your truth instead of going along with all the hype.

I don't know where you're from, but I'm pretty much smack-dab in the middle of the buckle of the Bible Belt.  People here have virtually no tolerance for any religion other than Christianity, and they have no problem trying to beat a conversion into you if you let it slip that you are not.  I consider myself a spiritual person:  mostly Native American, a good bit Buddhist, and some Judaism.

I have agoraphobia and the crowds and noise keep me confined to my house (probably why I'm so grumpy), so I don't go shopping.  Even when it's not Christmas I rarely shop.

I never said a bad word about the Salvation Army, and have made donations of clothes, furniture, household appliances and such to them.  I'm glad that they were there for you.  Right now, I'm disabled from a stroke, cardiopulmonary obstructive disorder, and depression, among other things, so it's not like I'm thumbing my nose at any charitable organization, although I have not availed myself of their help.  There are a lot of people out there who are a lot worse off than I am.

As far as hoops go, I have quit.  All my friends get warned about sending me presents this time of year, and I don't send any out.  I buy gifts for the kids in my family only.

Why should I buy any kind of tree when I don't want to celebrate Christmas?  And I do plant trees, small seedlings of all different types to reclaim waste areas.

It doesn't matter whether someone else wraps them.  I don't celebrate Christmas.

I don't have kids, and if I did, I probably still wouldn't celebrate Christmas.  I would go all out on each birthday if, I did.

I'd love for you to try to walk away from a fight with my mom.  She grabs you and hangs on!  If you don't respond to her angry words, she'll grab you by the face and demand an answer.  You must have had easier parents.

I don't have any problem with you celebrating Christmas.  I just don't want it forced down my throat.

I appreciate your concern.  Thank you for trying to inject some enjoyment into Christmas for me, but I'm pretty dyed in the wool about this.  I did not take your words as a criticism or poking fun, and I hope you and yours happiness in celebrating Christmas and in the year to come.

12/13 Holiday Horror Stories

Quote From: wendydarlingtx

Whoa, girlfriend! What a concise and well-composed post. I agree with you on many points, even though I personally don't hate Christmas. I actually rather enjoy it--to a certain extent, minus the icky commercialism.

Your item 1 is duly noted. I get the impression from reading various posts on this board that a big chunk of Dr. Phil viewers are Christians.

Please, Christians out there reading this, do not take too much offense to the lady's point 1. But she is right that Christians have co-opted a pagan ritual as their own, so you can't lay claim on this holiday and proclaim while looking down on us "others" that "Jesus is the reason for the season." If anything, Easter seems like it has much more relevance and importance to Christianity, since that event is a celebration of his suffering, sacrifice, and resurrection--if you are a Christian and believe in that, of course.

Thanks for the good words about my post, and the partial agreement.  Since you enjoy Christmas, I hope you have a good one, and a good coming year.

I noticed the preponderance of Christian opinions, too.  No wonder we get labeled a Christian nation by others around the world.  My spiritual make-up is mostly Native American, some zen Buddhism, and a dollop of Judaism.

Believe it or not, I've only gotten three replies, and they were all kind and polite.  I agree with you about Easter being a much more important day to Christians, but then why do children go nuts searching for chemically colored eggs that supposedly are distributed by an egg-laying bunny and (usually) not consumed?  Another pagan celebration that has been co-opted by Christians, and run into the ground by (yet again) commercialism.  It seems as if this nation has succumbed to having "a marketplace soul."  Yoking spirituality and commercialism seems to me to be the ultimate in corruption of the soul.  That leaves a bitter taste in my mouth, one I wish I could spit out.

Take care, and thanks again for "getting my back."
