The holidays are here, but some households never experience “peace on earth.” Dr. Phil’s guests refuse to embrace the spirit of the season, and say Christmas is the worst time of the year! Joyce has been married to Rick for 27 years, and has hated the holidays for 26 of those years. She refuses to put up a tree, decorate her house or listen to Christmas carols. Rick says Joyce even flipped out when he tried to dangle some mistletoe over her head!  Joyce has succeeded in ruining her family’s joy, but is she about to destroy her marriage? Then, Val has 11 kids, but says her three daughters stop at nothing to wreck the holidays. One daughter even resorted to breaking her sister’s finger on Christmas day! The constant fighting has pushed Val to consider something drastic. And, find out what special event Robin and Dr. Phil hosted to help celebrate the true holiday spirit! Talk about the show here.

Find out what happened on the show.

buying gifts

Quote From: afraid

wow we give gifts to all the children, no matter whear they live, as for you spending money to go on dr phils show? wow not only do you lie to your self but you sit infront of a computer and dare lie to me as well, dr phil paid your way 100% if you were a guest on his show!! and val i wouldnt want you to contact me in any other way than  posting me back here on dr phil dot com, after all i know dr phil looks out for us all and will not let any one have personal info, and this way also keeps key loggers out of my computer, you see there are a lot of theives out there and as far as i know you could be one aswell, no i think you will just have to be happy with the mods here at dr phil dot com, i trust them to keep the topics clean and safe for every one,and fair !!! as far as getting set in the right direction? which way is up !!!!!?

In my family, we reached an agreement that we no longer exchange gifts.  That's just the agreement.  It's not greedy and is less materialistic than forcing ppl to feel obligation.  Do you HAVE 11 children?  Then how can you judge someone who does?

BTW, having a debate is fine as long as your points are well researched and devoid of sheer emotion, but it seems you keep letting your emotions control your arguments (i.e. our gun control debate, mine used examples, and i didn't see any revelance to your argument).

Those three girls were pitiful. They are so needy it is disturbing. How could any mother buy preents for some of her children and justify not buying presents for the others.

It seems contrived, sadistic and unnecessarily cruel.

You are right. It is so wrong to have so many children, especially so close in age and punish them because they have needs you cannot met.

These young girls will repeat the cycle and have children they cannot nurture, because they themselves were not nurtured.   /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////  and this was my responce to what i read.////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////the mother would seem to use this holy time of year to punish her children  by making one feel not as worthy as the other!

What bit of difference does it make to you whether or not they get gifts?  It's not about being worthy, it's about being older.  Those girls are of age, they don't need plastic crap to make them feel special.  How do you KNOW they're not nurtured?  What does gift giving have to do with nurturing?

Gift giving

As far as gift giving goes, I like it.  And see no reason to leave out anyone.  Got yelled at once because I gave someone a Christmas gift and he didn't have one for me, or was that a card?  Well, anyway it wasn't a pleasant experience.  He happened to be taking me out to dinner at a very nice restaurant that night too, which I thought of as a gift!  So, hey, who can figure people out?  Then the next year he brought me champagne and nice glasses and shared it with me.

I'm a gift giver and no one can stop me!  I am also extremely good at getting good things for a bargain and average about $12 for each gift.  This year I discovered Amazon and got my first $30 free.  Even with the one day shipping I only ended up owing less than $5 for one CD and one DVD.   So, $2.50 for two people!  I got them both another gift since I did so well on that deal. Both of my sisters are pretty good at it getting deals too.  We give "thoughtful" type gifts in my family and extended family and so don't stress too much.  We were all hurting for money this year, but everyone exchanged gifts.

What I think is the best gift, though, is the gift of time.  Going out to see a Christmas play with someone you know will enjoy it, or taking someone out to dinner at a restaurant they love, or even just offering to do shopping for them if they can't get out or get to it themselves.

What you don't need is to judge first and think later.  I can tell youre offended by anyone speaking their mind.  If that's what they've agreed to, then that's what they've agreed to.  Why do you care?

The fighting is just a symptom that something else is wrong.  It means they seem to need attention and have some kind of Histrionicism/Narcissism going on.  It's not about not being nurtured.  A piece of plastic won't change that.  Getting therapy might.
