Just a Word of Encouragement

I have noticed that many of our group say "I know I am going to cheat"...I know in the past I have cheated a lot, now, since the surgery, I look at food and say to myself," which foods are going to help me not go through this again"...Please make up your mind ahead of time, no matter what the meal is, no matter how much there is, that you are going to do the best you can with what is available......More salad, less fattening foods....I have eaten out, I have even had fast food(not often)....I order the child's meal if I am eating fast food, so at least the volume is low....Most fast food restaurants have salads now, with or without chicken and seafood.....That is a great meal, just ask for fat free dressing if they have it....if not, put it on the side of the bowl and dip your fork into the dressing before picking up the bite of salad....You would be surprised how little you use this way........A lady of about 70 asked her doctor if the bypass surgery would really be worth it.....he said "Of course, you will feel like a new person"....The nurse said, "Yes, but first you will feel like you have been hit by a train."............Believe me, I met that train and I will do almost anything to stay off that track from now on......One of the side effects of heart surgery is depression, I am aware of that and do what I can to not go down that road also.......I was anemic when they checked my blood for surgery and gave me 2 units of blood to bring it up, my  doctor says I am still anemic so now I am on iron pills......That is probably why I was so tired all the time....in my reading I found this can be caused by the diabetes, among other things....I have been checked for internal bleeding, none found.....It is a two edged sword, I need more red meat to help with the anemia, but I have to be very careful because of the cholesterol.......This has been a real education in eating......I love salt, that is one thing that I am not supposed to have.......I actually found some good salt free potato chips....They are fried, but no cholesterol and little fat....Still have to be careful, I would eat the whole bag at one sitting.....All I am saying is "self control" for us all....MaryB

Thanks for the reminder.  The counterpart is that even with totally controlled diet  ( foods)  the subject of  exersize comes up.  Because health in general  - heart and other organs need to have the body moving to do their best work for us.  So if someone cheats now and then with a food choice and also does not exersize more it is a double whammy.  For us older ladies I think the real challenge is not only the food choices but trying to find exersize that will fit in with our various  limitations/illnesses.  It is very hard to have a regular exersize program when you are also coping with physical limitations.  Not impossible  just challenging.  and from all I read here most of us do not do well with  just tasting one bite of forbidden foods.  Better to find something more  acceptable to eat.  I cheated yesterday with a cinnamon bun and today I am back on track mentally and physically.  Foresight is best but hindsight is better than no sight at all.   LOL    Rainy

Cheating versus Bad Choice

I have a hard time not thinking of this WLC as a lifestyle change if we are still talking about cheating. What are we cheating? Maybe we would all do better to think of it as a poor choice. When I heard J.J. Virgin say that if you wanted ice cream, have three bites and get over it, I knew that for me the choice is to not have any ice cream. When I do, I feel it is a choice I am making(Chinese Buffet).  If I start thinking of this as a diet, instead of a lifestlyle change, I know it won't work permanently..  Just some food for thought-not trying to ruffle any feathers.   Laineybea

I Agree with Laineybea

It's all about changing our thinking about food. Being a yo-yo dieter, I know that what and how much I ate worked, UNTIL I decided to go back to the old way of eating that made me OBESE in the first place. Once I gained the weight back, I wondered why I couldn't keep the weight off. WELL DUH!!!! I went back to eating the high sugar foods, biscuits and gravy, chips and dip, fast foods, candy bars, & second helpings. Those first helpings were more like 2-3 servings. The bottom line? I wasn't willing to give up the past to stay in a slimmer/healthier world.

Cheat: A person who deceives or defrauds; swindler; also, a swindle. To practice fraud or trickery.  Is this the choice you really want to make with your life? Gin

Cheating - Gin & Laineybea

Good Morning Girls!

Mother went down to have her hair done so I have a few minutes alone this morning and decided to read a little of the board.  The first two messages that appeared before me today were GIN and LAINEYBEA's posts about cheating.  I be totally honest, I agree with those 2 posts.  I think, at our ages, we should be beyond the idea of cheating.  Everything we do, we do as a choice.  If we choose to eat foods that are inconsistent with our goals, we have chosen to do so.  Unless we are sleepwalking and have no control over what we are eating, we make choices.  We make thousands of them each and every day.  The type and amount of food are only some of those choices, whether or not we bet any IE is another choice.  I'm not suggesting that there are NOT factors that can make all of these choices more difficult, depression for one, but for the most part they are choices.  I have tried to maintain that attitude and, Gin, I have yo-yo'd for years and years and years for the exact same reasons you mentioned.  As soon as I got to my goal weight I thought I could eat whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted it, and as much as I wanted.  As a result, people who knew me, saw me through "thick and thin," and "thick and thin," and "thick and thin."  You get the idea.

Now, moving on.  PEGS88, I'm doing well.  I am spending more and more time doing the smaller things now.  I find that I have the time now to think about exactly where I want something and am taking the time to make "things" look nice now - instead of just getting it all into a room somewhere.  It's been two weeks since I got here.  I feel another week will have everything just about completely under control.  The biggest problem we have is 2 complete kitchens!  Unfortunately, we only have 1 kitchen - but pots, pans, and dishes for 2.  That will be the most difficult.

Little Fluff has made sure I've gotten my morning walks in this week.  We overslept yesterday morning and I was going to do something else, but he wouldn't let me.  As soon as I get dressed in the morning, we go for a walk and he knows that now.  We are not walking great distances, but we are walking.  I'm following a beginning walking program I found at the Walking website.  It is a 12 week program and will be perfect for us.  I don't know if LF will be able to go on the walks of 45 minutes to an hour.  We will have to wait and see.

Mother left me a list of "Honey Do's" when she left, so I better get busy.  I hope each of you will have a great day today.  This will be our last cooler day for a week.  We will be close to 90 all of next week . . . that's more than a might bit uncomfortable down here!

     Until Later,

          FLUFFY

cheating discussion

A good discussion this morning on "cheating" When we choose to go off our new "lifestyle" back to the old I think we are "cheating" ourselves. Cheating ourselves of the rewards that come from living this new improved lifestyle. We are not yet perfect -- we are human beings that have lived a lifetime of poor choices and habits. This is an on going- working plan to quote Dr Phil "What matters now is that you continue to build this life for yourself, a life that with each passing day will bring you health, energy, confidence, peace of mind that cannot be disturbed and a spirit that soars. If you can do this--and you can--then you will have what you want because you made the choices, you accomplished what was required, and you reached for the best that was within you.-- Here's to YOU."

seventh key support team

pg 279 quote "never dissolve the supporting team you put together in the seventh key" Have we each--- "put together our own supporting team? "as you face the future, not only should you choose what you eat, how you act, and what you think and feel, you MUST also CHOOSE your support circle."--- Also on this same page - next paragraph. think about this statement when you think "cheating" "wrong choices" ------"While you may have some strikeouts, you must not let them discourage or deter you. If it takes one swing of the bat, fine. If it takes ten, that's okay, too. Learn from these things, and live what you have learned." --- I recall he said early on -- you have to at least put the bat on your shoulder and swing-- Try try again if you have to -- we will succeed with the support of one another.

Cheating vs Choices

Good Topic This Morning,

I agree totally with what's been said about making the right choices versus thinking of "cheating", you only use that term when you are on a "diet" and this program is not a diet !!!  Each of us is only responsible for the choices we make, good or bad, and we have to deal with the consequences of those choices....Remember Dr Phil's line..."You can't change what you don't acknowledge".. Well this hold true with choices... We must be honest with ourselves and acknowledge that the choices we are making in food are either going to help us in our quest for a healthier body or they are going to put us back a step or two if we allow the desire for a high fat or high calorie food to take over and interfer with what we are trying to accomplish.... A bite or two is fine, but not many of us can't stop there...Soooooo it's better to just walk away and pick something else or find an alternative  activity that isn't compatible with eating....

In our desire and our quest for a better life and healthier body we must get our minds back to the program and concentrate on the healthy and good things we should be doing instead of lusting after unhealthy foods.......Enough said !!!!

I say these things not only for all of you but for myself too.... Today I am once again cleanning out the fridge and the freezer and getting rid of the foods that are calling to me that I know I should not be eating....  I challenge you all to do the same.... It's time to make sure we are compliant with the program by cleanning out our cupboards, and fridge... Ask yourself, if Dr Phil came to my house today and looked in my cupboards/fridge would he be horrified to see what is there????

Before my trip to the grocery store today, I'm getting busy and weeding out the stuff I do not want to be there... My son will have to find a place for the snacks etc. that he eats so that I don't see them and hear them calling my name....

Have a great day everyone.... Let's get back where we should all be.....  Peg (*_*)
