With reality TV and the virtual worlds of MySpace and YouTube, becoming an instant star is easier than ever. But to what lengths will some people go for fortune and fame? Two producers, Michael and Perry, attempt to find out in their new documentary, American Cannibal. Many contestants say they would eat a finger, cut off a toe and even starve themselves to death just to get their 15 minutes of fame! Then, Brian is so desperate for a rich-and-famous lifestyle that he’s willing to give up his virginity on national TV. Brian says losing his innocence for millions is a good career move, but what happens if he doesn’t make the cut on the show? And, Somaya insists that self-promotion on the Internet has made her a celebrity who attends red carpet events. Her best friend, Alysia, says using the Web for publicity is so dangerous, it even garnered Somaya a stalker! Is Alysia really concerned for her friend, or is she just jealous? Plus, Sam, an unforgettable contestant on the reality show The Apprentice, reveals for the first time how he hit rock bottom chasing the celebrity dream. Share your thoughts, join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

Agree, but don't agree:)

Thank you for the response.  You are very right.  Hollywood gives us only what we will pay for.

You are forgetting about the OTHER HALF of society that has turned Hollywood off. This other half would be willing to shell out more money for GOOD television and movies. We're seeing this now with all the G-rated "Family" movies Hollywood is finally making. Our family heads to the theater for these types of movies; we do not WASTE our money on anything that glorifies bad behavor/bad morals.

When we stop valuing Hollywood and its lack of good values, only then will the industry change (which is much like what you said). However, Hollywood is a bunch of 20-something producers who were raised by 1960's to 80's parents....they stayed away from God and religion, they were often latch key kids often NOT out of necessity and their parents gave them material reward for simply breathing (probably out of guilt). When this group of producers move over for the kids that came a decade later, I do believe we'll see positive change in Hollywood.

Now we have little competition in sports, NO competition in the public schools, everyone gets rewarded for simply showing up or playing and ribbons and medals can't be giving out unless each and every kid gets one. And we have to wonder why our children want their 15 minutes of fame?????

My mother, born in 1925, raised her daughters to give back (volunteer, donate) and to not value "stuff." I stay home (by choice) and my husband of 18 years makes well over 80,000 (a fact to make my point, not bragging). Our children do not have tv's or dvd players in their rooms, or even computers. They don't own cell phones or palm pilots. We drive old, paid-for cars. We share two computers in the house (in family areas), we watch little TV (when we do, it's usually a family show or a Disney movie (that we watch together) and we attend eachother's sporting/school events. On Sundays we're in mass, followed by a day of family time. We eat our meals together at dinnertime and do the yardwork as a family. Our kids have many friends, all of whom come over from time-to-time for "play time."

I TRULY BELIEVE it's the choices we've made for our children that make ALL THE DIFFERENCE in their value system....what they do in life, what they choose to subscribe to, who they pick as friends, how they vote at the polls and what they will choose to watch on TV when they are older,  etc.

Hollywood gives NOT ALL of us what we pay for.....eventually they'll smarten up (due to the almightly dollar) and start giving families what we've been craving!!!!!

Agree, but not 100%

While I agree with your sentiment, I do think there are new things out there.  The messages may not have changed, but the messengers have.  Now we can delve into the "bizarre and gruesome" without leaving our own homes.  Not only that, but the "entertainment" is not regionalized.  Wherever you live,  you can still see it!   The Romans did not feature cannibalism.  As with other things, we become more and more desensitized and need more and more graphic "entertainment" to satisfy us.

But let's not forget that all television and movies are not like this.  I am against censorship by any organization.  The only true and effective censorship comes from the consumer.  These programs would go off the air if we weren't watching them.  If what we demand has a low standard, how can we complain if that's what we get?

Children deserve censorship. They are not mature adults and their social development should be the concern of ALL society, just as their education is. They are also not paying consumers; rather, they are undeserving victims.

Cleaning up TV during children hours is responsible citizenship, not censorship. We adults stay up later and can watch all the filth we want then. We can also read our porno mags (even read them at the library beside young children....), visit strip clubs and pay for porno over the computer (there's even the free stuff for people short on cash...and perhaps brains).

Dr. Phil...Dr. Phil...Dr. Phil...

I have watched your show since you first came on Oprah, and I usually enjoy YOUR show...but, I have noticed that of late, you have become 'tolerant' of things you never 'seemed' to be tolerant of before. Your morals are slipping. Todays show was the limit. Instead of you 'giving in' to this young man who wants his virginity shown on TV....you seemed to say to the world that it was okay...'if that's what you want to do'....that was what I got out of it anyway. And, I have noticed  a few times before that you 'go with the flow' instead of telling people like it is, like you used to do. I do hope that you are not following what is popular, but try to get people to do what is right. I thought your program was the only descent one left...am I wrong? In today's society, we NEED people who will stand up for what is right, ESPECIALLY for our young people...they are becoming freaks. I just wonder, when I watch them, just who raised these freaks....I am so glad that this young man was NOT MY SON and I THINK YOU ARE PROBABLY THINKING THE SAME THING...SO WHY NOT TELL HIM?

Nancy

I agree with this post.  I used to think that  you, Dr. Phil were the most upstanding moral person making sure that you say what is "right".  I'm hoping that since your fame and money, you don't back down and become PC just because of all the "people" that you have to please.  Everything that people do is NOT o.k. even tho they aren't hurting anyone doing it.  I just feel like you are heading down the slippery slope of life on going along with things just to keep the peace.  I  hope not.  I like you a lot and want to continue to watch your show.

Quote From: nasale

It really peaved me off to hear the guy with the beard sit there an proclaim EVERYBODY wants to be on a reality show. UP YOURS, BUDDY! I don't give two hoots what the rest of 'society' does and I don't have a competitive bone in my body. Don't measure everyone else by your puny, pathetic yardstick!
Oh yeah, as if I would go behind someones back and brainwash them to lose virginity on national t.v. just for 15 minues only to get dumped by loved ones. Good luck finding any job after that because you just got labeled Dumb. And why wont the bearded guy do it or is he just out to be a mgr. which he thinks he is. another one that can be labeled the same. and for the producer no way would that get my attention. All that is is flashing more porn down everyones throats/minds you should be ashamed You put a label with an A on you and he can't figure out why he can't shake that A look at what you are prodlucing!

Ditto, ditto, ditto!!

I wish I had more time to write today, but I just want to add my opinion to all of yours. It is HORRIBLE that we as Americans are allowing the media to influence us to the degree we are;

that nothing is considered too disgusting any more; that we act powerless to change any of it.

I'm totally with those of you that said we each need to refuse to watch and read things that promote evil. Hit the corporations in their wallets, and there might be some hope!

When I see things like this, it reminds me how much we need to pray. It makes me sick that the young man who wants to lose his virginity on tv obviously values himself (and women) so little.

God, help us. To those of you who are doing your part by imparting respect and values to your children and spending time with them: God bless you, and don't give up. You're doing more good than you know.

What kind of dumb question is that?

Quote From: victim_of_fun0

I can't imagine WHY this guy is a virgin....

Perhaps he values himself, God and the women in his life. Perhaps he doesn't want to have sex with all the people his partner has slept with. Perhaps he wants to avoid disease and death. Perhaps he doesn't end up with a child out of wedlock. Perhaps he respects what God gave him and wants to share it with the person who will be his partner for life.

If I had done that, I would not have HPV. I would not have felt bad about myself all the times the guy didn't call me back for another "date." I wouldn't have had to drink excessively to make myself feel better about all the stupid things I did.

By the grace of GOD, I am alive and healthy...and now happily married 18 years with two wonderful children. If I had it ALL to do over again, I would wait until my current husband came along and I would not be sitting here with HPV, having to be checked early to see if the cancer cells have returned!!!

Yes, perhaps he's a virgin because he's BRIGHT!!! And perhaps he doesn't want to accept all the consequences that often come with bad choices!

Whats wrong with society today?

What ever happened to morals and feeling good about yourself inside.. I watched the show today about being famous and all, and what person would want to lose their virginity to a porn star.. If people would have any intelligence at all they would go out and get a real job that pays.. Everyone wants to be famous, because they all think they have a glamorous life, but look at half of them they are on drugs, or getting DUI.. A lot of them are depressed, because they thought money would make them happy, but it didn't.. What network would allow a show on about guys losing their virginity.. I mean children watch TV to, and the only time slot I could think it show like that would go on is midnight.. I think fame is overrated, and people that are obsessed with celebs have to get a hobby to occupy your time.. I mean Celeb are not any better than you and I..

Understand the need to be famous

I understand the desire to be famous and merely turn off what I do not like on television.  The last woman however was such a hypocryte.  She flashed her breasts all over her site and then cut others down who did the same, very sad, both the act and the hypocrasy.  Her desire to be famous was no different than the others.

Not everyone who has sex before marriage gets an STD....not by a long shot.

And not everyone who saves themselves until marriage is saved from an STD.
