Allison Quets made headlines around the world when she allegedly kidnapped her 17-month-old twins across the border into Canada this past Christmas. She had given them up for adoption, but did she do so under duress? She now says she suffered from a pregnancy disease called hyperemesis that left her malnourished and sleep deprived to the point of complete exhaustion. See an exclusive interview with Allison from behind bars where she awaits trial on two counts of international parental kidnapping, with a possible sentence of three years behind bars. Then, look inside the life of a woman who is only three-and-a-half months pregnant and so sick with hyperemesis she spends most of her day on the bathroom floor. Plus, find out what all women need to know about hyperemesis: How you get it, how to know you have it, and whether it could kill you or your unborn child. Join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

Surviving

Unfortunately, I think this woman shows lack of good judgement. I think she shows evidence that she is not mentally stable. Even though these are her biological children, any one in their right mind would not attempt to give them up twice and then expect to get them back. By the pattern that she has shown, I am worried that this pattern may continue and she may continue trying to abandon her children on more occassions in the future..If that is the case, do you really think it's healthy for a child to see their parent repeatidly attempting to give them up?..I understand she had a disease at the time these bad decisions were made but I think it would be in the best interest of the children to leave them in what sounds like a much more stable environment.....I have a son and I know how important it is that decisions are made with his best interest in mind. If she was so worried about her health but didn't truly want to give her children up, why didn't she create a will and still have full custody of her children? That way if anything happened to her, her children would be taken care of, but in the mean time, she would still have full custody of her children...
When you're suffering from HG, you're not worrying about making a will or making plans for the future,  you're worried you won't wake up in the morning. I suggest you educate yourself on the DISEASE of HG at www.helpHER.org - maybe then you'll have some sympathy for Allison and the disease she suffered from.

Would someone be as harsh with her had she has Cancer and gave them up durring treatment? I think not I think because HG is not out in the open people do not give it the respect they do for other illness.

Thanks, Dr. Phil!

I just wanted to say thank you to Dr. Phil and his staff.  I am currently suffering from this horrible disease.  As a result of the constant nausea/vomiting, I have been hospitalized 3 times for IV fluids and lost 30 pounds so far.  I have been placed on Zofran, a powerful medication, but  still suffer everyday. The next option for my doctor is to place me on home IV fluids or a medication pump (similar to an insulin pump, but with my medicine).  I am a highly educated teacher, but have missed 25 days of work since becoming pregnant. I have been under intense scrutiny at work--some people think I'm overexaggerating my illness.  Thank you for bringing information about this disease into the national spotlight. I hope women across America who might be suffering, but don't know what they are dealing with can use this information to get some relief.  I also hope people in the medical field who don't take this disease seriously pause to rethink their views on hyperemesis. Thank you so much Dr. Phil!

diclectin

Quote From: kotacanada

I was at home and I received a phone call frommy Mother to turn on the Dr.Phil show.  I wondered why until she told me what the show was about.

I was 26 years old pregnant with my daughter.  I was happy I found out I was prgnant one day and from about 3 weeks after conception, it all started.  I was told by everyone, friends and family you have a bad case of morning sickness.. I was sleeping on the floor in the bathroom, I stopped eating, drank less, I was being sick soo often that i was blowing the blood vessels in my eyes.  My husband at the time had enough of seeing me soo sick and weak that we went to the emerg. room and they wanted to prescribe me Diclectin..i knew nothing of the drug so I refused and called my OBGYN and he decribed it for me..I started out taking 2 pills 3 times a day then it eventually went up to 4 pills 3 times a day...That still didn't work. I ended up inthe hospital,  IV, Potassium IV and they took me off food and fluids..I couldn't even keep ice chips down for 10 mins.  I lost over 30 pounds in 2 weeks..I was being sick about 20-25 times a day and my veins were blowing because of the IV's..I was in the hospital for about a month, I lost soo much weight and muscle I could no longer stand on my own..The Dr. finally put me on Zofran to help with the nausea..It did help but I was on Medication for the rest of my pregnancy..

All I was told was that I was in the less than 1% of having what I did.  i would like to learn more about this and see if my daughters asthma or any other medical problems that may occur could be because of the medications or just from the stress my body was on...Wondering why this is what it took for this Hyper...to become more public and more aware?

im just wondering if you live in canada.  we can not get diclectin in the us.  there also was another drug years ago that was similar to diclectin (started with a b...) but they took it off the market because they thought it caused birth defects. they learned it didnt but failed to put it back on the market.  There are several treatments that are not legal in this country that are helpful so i was just curious where you come from...

Yet another example of how we blame our misdeeds on some "syndrome" or another.

Do some research on HG and you'll find that the majority of those diagnosed are people with a history of psychiatric conditions.

As for the woman who kidnapped the twins she'd put up for adoption, it appears she was emotionally unstable when she signed the adoption papers - TWICE - and is still unstable.

I would  have to disagree with your statement regarding the mental status of people with HG.  I have now suffered HG three times.  I have a very stable mental history and no incidence of even post-partum depression.

You need to do a bit more in-depth research.  The idea that HG was a "mental" disease resulted from a very flawed research study.  The placebo used for the study was IV fluids with dextrose (sugar water).  If you take any severely dehydrated patient who has been unable to eat or drink and introduce fluids and calories they will show improvement.  This improvement was not because they "believed" the placebo would help but because it did!  Years of suffering and mistreatment have resulted from the very poorly executed study.

My first HG pregnancy was many years ago when the standard of care was "if you were happier about being pregnant then you wouldn't be sick" and my health suffered because if it.  Women and their babies DIE because of uneducated people like you.

Surviving HG

Quote From: desertgal328

I saw the show & completely understand the adoptive parents reluctance to appear.  I would have been more sympathetic to Allison, but she made the comment that the aparents aren't parents, this is so wrong.  The parent is the person who comforts a child when they're hurt or sick.  I am an adoptee & my aparents were always my parents.  I'm also an adoptive parent and my son knows that he has 2 mothers & 2 fathers, but we are the ones that take care of him.

Why didn't she ask for help?? Surely there is someone in her family who could have helped her, if not, I'm sure the state could have helped. Sorry, she signed the papers, the babies have bonded with the aparents & they are old enough to know if they are taken away from them.  By the time this is all straightened out these poor babies will be 2½ or 3years old & hopefully a judge will show some compassion for them& leave them with the parents they know.

I also wonder why the ex-boyfriend dropped out of the picture.  Did he ever intend to help her care for the child/children??

The state? Doctors don't even know about this disease and you think the state would have helped her?

She signed the papers UNDER DURESS, she was suffering from the effects of a DISEASE and because of that, their "adoption" isn't legal.

Heartless

Give this poor mother back her children!!! What kind of hearts do these adoptive parents have? I cant imagine denying a mother her children when I knew what turmoil she has been through. She deserves those babies and I pray she gets them back! She wasn't being selfish when she gave them up, she was looking for their best interest.....why can't people see that?!?!

Twin tugs.

I am a mother of 3mth old.  I was deeply saddened by watching todays show.  My opinion is the twins belong to the biological Mom.  No matter what hasty decision she took, the twins belong to her.  Each day she must be hoping that one day she`ll get back the twins.  She does not belong in jail.  My heart goes out to the Mom.

I thing that the people who have the twin are being selfish

Hi,

I am a mother of two. Thank God I don't have Hyperemesis Gravidarum. Feel so bad for Allison. I also think that the people who have the twins are being SELFISH. They are only think of what they want and not what is best for the babys. The babys belong with there mother. I know that if I was going to adopt. I would want the mother to be sure that she wanted to give the babys up. I also think that the people who have the babys knew that Allison was unsure about giving her babys away. I think that they didn't care. I think that they only cared about what they wanted and would do anything to get what they wanted. Even if that meant to steal a baby. I think that they knew that Allison was having a hard time and they took advantage Allison. To get what they wanted. If they cared about the babys they would not drag them thought the courts and they would not take them away from there mother. They need to think about what this is doing to the babys and stop think about them self.
