(Original Air Date: 04/17) Having a stranger steal from you is bad enough, but what happens when your own flesh and blood does it? Ricky and Ray say their brother, Robin, has been stealing their identities for years. Robin has used his older sibling’s ID to open lines of credit, rent a mobile home, and he even attempted to buy a Harley! Worst of all, they say Robin used their names when he was arrested, causing warrants to be issued for them. The problem is so out of control that Ricky’s fiancée, Robyn, is worried about taking his last name after the wedding, for fear of being mistaken for Robin. The brothers want to confront their younger sibling but haven't been able to locate him. With Dr. Phil's help, the confrontation finally takes place. This is a showdown you don’t want to miss! Plus, identity theft can happen anywhere … even at your job. Dr. Phil wants to see just how easily this fraud occurs, so staff members do a little snooping around the Dr. Phil offices at night to see what personal information they can find. You won’t believe what they dig up! Share your thoughts, join the discussion.

07/19 Identity Theft

Quote From: realhappy

A company called LIFELOCK is the only one I'd trust (no, I don't work for them).

Take a look at their website, where the company owner lists his own ssn right over his photo.

You may have his number, but it's worthless to thieves now that its registered with his company.  (Sort of like having a movie star's phone number -- but no phone service)

I hope you have done some research about the company - the founder and what they actually do when you do have your identity stolen.  It is not just about you protecting your identity - you are in numerous databases, do business with all sorts of companies, and NO ONE can say you will not get your identity stolen.  Phoenix New TImes published an article on 6/5/07 on an investigative piece done on Robert J. Maynard Jr., one of the founders of Lifelock who is a suspected identity thief who may have stolen his own father's identity.  The article also mentioned that customers who previously handed over such sensitve data to another business Maynard owned became victims of theft.  Maynard denied wrongdoing but the federal government issued a permanent injunction banning him from "advertising, promoting, offering for sale, selling, performing, or distributing any product or service relating to credit improvement services."    I would recommend further research.  It sounds good, but there is more to the story.  I represent a company that has full layered protection to assist in all types of Identity Theft situations and they will even do the work on your behalf.  You also have legal assistance when needed when you get picked up for warrants or crimes committed by someone other than you but in your name.

This is my ex-husband

Quote From: anon_slc

How do we recognize the remorseless? One of their chief characteristics is a kind of glow or charisma that makes sociopaths more charming or interesting than the other people around them.  Theyre more spontaneous, more intense, more complex or even sexier than everyone else, making them tricky to identify and leaving us easily seduced.  Some of favorite books which provide a great introduction and insight on the subject:

Without Conscience:  The Disturbing World of the Psychopaths Amoung Us by Robert Hare

Emotional Blackmail:  When the People in Your Life Use Fear, Obligation and Guilt to Manipulate You by Susan Forward AND Why is it Always About You?:  The Seven Deadly Sins of Narcissism by Sandy Hotchkiss

Treating Personality Disorders in Children and Adolescents:  A Relational Approach by Efrain Bleiberg

Fundamentally, sociopaths are different because they cannot love. Sociopaths learn at an early age to show fake emotion, but underneath they are indifferent to others suffering.  They live to dominate and thrive for the thrill to win.  We all almost certainly know at least one or more sociopaths already.

Hope it helps!

This is my ex-husband.  I had to deal with him for seven years of marriage, and then we got divorced and I still had to deal with him and his conniving lawyers and then his third wife who was just like him.  Then he screwed her over in their divorce, but imo, she deserved it.  When my youngest turned 17, he moved Las Vegas, leaving his two kids behind and thank God, I don't have to deal with him ANYMORE.  I thought for sure once he got to Las Vegas, someone would kill him due to his lying, stealing, and his sociopathic ways.

What can you do about ID Theft?

There are so many steps that one can take to avoid Identity Theft but  there is no 100% guarantee that your information won't be used. No matter what you do, you are as likely a target for Identity Theft as any other person you know.

I was one of the 26.5 million Veterans that received the notification of the breach in 2006. No one is safe. Some claim that they will never have their identity stolen because they protect everything. Right they may but what about their high school, college, DMV,or hospital where they were born?

There are other that say "let them have my identity". That opens doors to another type of identity theft where someone can commit a crime in your name and the warrant goes out in YOUR name.

Everyone's identity can be stolen, most of the time with disastrous outcomes.

5 Areas of Identity Theft

We typically hear about the financial side of ID theft, but there are actually five areas:

1. Financial: credit cards and checking accounts
2. Criminal or character
3. Medical info
4. Drivers license
5. Social Security

I've had my identity stolen 3 times over the past 5 years and it doesn't feel good. Fortunately, my company resolved this for me quickly and thoroughly each time. This problem will not go away any time soon. For more information, please visit my profile.

The Big Lie

I've seen the website for Lifelock. Not only do they boldly tell the big lie(they guarantee your identity will not be stolen) but the terms of the guarantee state clearly that they will determine if it the guarantee will be activiated.  What's to stop them from simply finding the person subscribing to the service contributed to the ID theft to begin with.  According to them this is a no no.  So if your purse gets stolen with your information were you contributing because you had your ID, credit cards, wallet and social security number inside.  I'd suggest you read the fine print then have a lawyer look it over before you sign up.

More importantly, no credit monitoring or reimbursement program is going to help you when one of my former co-workers pulls you over for speeding and get's notified of a warrant an ID thief got in your name.  You will be sitting in jail till you can "tell it to the judge".

In Shock

I checked my credit report 2 days ago because my credit score had dropped.  My personal info had a previous name & address that were not mine. I had a new employer which was actually my doctors office.  Upon investigating, an employee at my doctors office got my SS# out of my file & took out 4 loans.  She has a previous record in another state & is still on probation. I have  filed a report with the Police Dept. & am sure it will catch up with her, but my troubles have only just begun. I've been told it will take me a year to get my credit report straightened out.

BEST ANSWER

People just haven't realized just how devastating this can be when it happens to them. Most think it is just about the financial side they have to worry about. The only company to my knowledge that protects all 5 areas of Identity Theft is Kroll Background America, a 30+ year old company. In most cases other than financial, you will need legal representation to clear your name, a comprehensive solution just like your car insurance. Kroll the number one risk management company in the world has team w/ Pre-Paid Legal Service Inc to give this protection to familys so they can sleep better a night knowing the number one risk management company is watching them as they sleep. For more information, www.prepaidlegal.com/info/waporterfield for full details on coverage. Dare to compare.

The Identity Theft show missed the mark completely

The Identity Theft show missed the mark completely.  By focusing on the bad brother the real issue was avoided.  Identity theft is a misnomer created by corporations who are aided by a federal law called the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA).  A person's identity is intrinsic, it can't be stolen.  What's getting stolen is money from large companies who are so anxious to make a profit they don’t take the time to learn who they’re about to do business with.  The real crime is that these companies have convinced us, and apparently Dr. Phil, that their losses are our problem.  Dr. Phil said, ten million Americans have their identities ripped off every year.  How big does this problem have to become before we get smart enough to demand our legislators rewrite the laws to protect individual citizens instead of rich, powerful corporations?

Companies use technology to maximize their profits, but when thieves exploit companies' loose business practices, companies cry, "identity theft" to obscure their own weaknesses.  Try calling a credit card company and asking a simple question unrelated to personal information, such as their address to mail a payment...  They won’t give you the answer until you answer a litany of questions, all designed so you’ll feel good that they’re trying to protect your identity.  But they apparently don’t try very hard to protect our identities when it counts, when a thief applies for a new credit card by submitting a simple form using someone else’s name.

Social security numbers, driver license numbers and other identifying data can never be secure because countless people have legitimate access to these data, including health care administrators, bank workers, and government employees.  So instead of focusing on the impossible--trying to secure that which cannot be secured--we should be focusing on responsibility.  Dr. Phil advocates personal responsibility – now it’s time to advocate corporate and government responsibility.  When a thief uses someone else’s name to steal from a company, the company needs to accept responsibility for being swindled.  I’m not suggesting we forgive the thieves, only that we make the companies go after the thieves, not the innocent, third parties who had nothing – absolutely nothing – to do with the theft.

Dr. Phil’s show started off showing how staff members left account statements on their desks or in the trash.  This stunt is just one more example of blaming the victim.  What needs to be shown is how easily a thief can convince a company to open an account in someone else’s name.  Only then will this problem get fixed.

When a company or government agency errs in identifying someone, they should be responsible for their error.  If a company incorrectly tells a credit bureau someone isn’t paying their bills on time, then the company who made the mistake needs to be held accountable for the harm they’ve caused.  Only when they see a financial penalty for making mistakes that hurt innocent people will they take the time to carefully screen their potential customers.  Government agencies also need to be held accountable when they act on incorrect information and harm innocent citizens.

When ten million of us are being victimized each year, we need powerful spokesmen like Dr. Phil to stand up and demand changes in the laws to protect the innocent and require those who make mistakes to accept responsibility for their mistakes.
