(Original Air Date: 05/04/07) Dr. Phil speaks with women who say they feel forgotten by their loved ones because of their excessive weight. Lorna weighs 650-plus pounds and feels abandoned by her family. Lorna’s sister, Glenice, says Lorna got herself into this situation; now she has to take responsibility and get herself out. Lorna’s boyfriend, Blair, takes care of her, but Glenice says he’s not the Mr. Nice Guy he appears to be. She says he's really an abuser. Lorna says Blair is exhausted and stressed from the hard job of caring for her, and her family needs to help rather than drive him away. Is Lorna ready to stop accepting the abuse and start accepting help? Then, Sunni weighs almost 300 pounds and wants to pursue her dream of being a plus-size model. Her boyfriend, Christian, however, says she’s too fat for the runway, and she should leave that dream to the skinny girls. Sunni says she is big and fabulous, and Christian makes her feel like she should crawl under a rock. Will Sunni be forced to pick between her relationship and her dream? Share your thoughts here.

me again-jus ranting

i would like to add that I am disabled,. and most people that become disabled gain alot of weight due to the fact of injury and non-movement,.. it jus goes hand n hand... luckily, I was in college for Psyc and know ALOT about the internal workings; mental, spiritual, emotional and physical---they all go together.. cannot have one w/out the other.

i am near 7-8 years disabled (complete body; head injuries/back/neck. ect..) gained 40 pounds in the FIRST year,.. and had a wake-up call even then!..  so I haven't gained ONE POUND since!.. so, yes.. I know that it CAN be done, in some circumstances. For myself i made a personal choice as well as had a CareGiver that wouldn't buy me any icecream, pop, candybars, COFFEE DRINKS!... MMMMmmmmmmmm... OMG I am sooooooo dying!...  ok ok ok... lol..  he done good,.. and unlike the one *n*.. her bf is an ass.. (can i say that here???).. My CareGiver is sooooo incredible,..  he has kept me in line with myself, according to my OWN standards,.. not his. i was a body builder prior to disability,. so I already had it in me. It is called PERSONAL POWER... some have it,.. some don't.

i was abused from the day i was born,.. seriously- put into ovens as a baby,.. bit from head to toe, yes, as a baby... beaten and neglected by babysitters as a child.. molested by my fav uncle at 7.. I could go on and on... through the teen years... then i married an abuser, at 16.. and was abused in every way possible for yet another 15 years. HE, my EX-HUSBAND,.. is one of the sources of my disabilities,... I divorced him and had a few years to pick myself up from that. And in 2000, as soon as I started college,.. my body gave up. as well as everyone in my life,... I have noone- 'cept my CareGiver, now.

i HATE my life, myself, my ex and whiners..... hate em. I hate people that are sooo close-minded and live in the past,. the ol' days...  people like my own mom disgust me.. i STILL sit out by my window at night and stare into the sky and ask God when,.... why,... mostly when,.. when will it go away,. the pain;... when will i get better,... when will i find love,... when, when when.. OMG!!!  drives me nuts. i don'tneed to hear anyones comments about this and that,.. been there, done it. even though i am only 37,... i am VERY spiritual and try to stay grounded,. but when u keep getting abused, whether it's by your mom, uncle, bestfriend, boyfriend, husband and everyone else in the world like your doctors, hospitals, medicaid/fia, lawyers...  UGHHHH...

I'm done ranting,...  this show jus really got to me today. All i do everyday is watch tv and be on the net and after so many years one can understand why i am the way i am!

sorry, i jus need some real help

Your fairy tales make me laugh!

"Once upon a time there was a girl who weighed 200+ pounds.  Her boyfriend, a miserably scrawny little pole, made fun of her and put her down constantly.  Well, those insults just helped that poor "would be beautiful if only she was skinny" girl decide to lose weight...just for him because let's face it, he deserves a skinny girl on his arm, he's such a prince!  She called out to her fairy godmother who supplied her with magic pills and told her to walk around the block a couple of times.  Two weeks later, * POOF* the girl was a lovely ninety pounds.  Yeah sure, the bones of her skeleton were sticking out and her organs were failing, but at least her jacka$$ of a boyfriend had a skinny girl on her arm and all those judgemental hypocrites in the world didn't have to see a fat woman anymore!  And they all lived happily ever after until the girl OD'ed on magic pills and died at 60 pounds!  The end."

You've got to be kidding me!  Do you people hear yourselves?  Do you THINK for one second that fat or obese people WANT to be fat or obese?  That's like saying a black person wants to be on welfare or a hispanic person wants to work in a field until the day they die.  You'd NEVER say that, and you should watch what you say about the overweight!  What a horrible stereotype you've put on these people who need your encouragement, not your hatred!  Grow up and get out of kindergarten, why don't you?  If it were that easy, don't you think there would be a bunch of skinny people running around the world instead of an obese epidemic running rampant throughout this country?

Look at it this way.  We chunky monkeys give you skinny so-and-so's (I got another word for you, but it would never clear the boards!) someone to make your low self esteem feel better because you can make fun of them!  I wish I could bonk you on the head with a magic wand so you have to be obese for JUST ONE DAY!  You'd lose that sorry attitude quick, fast and in a hurry, I guarantee you!

overweight and forgotten

I was very frustrated with this show...frustrated to the point that I registered to DrPhil.com to complain.  Although I don't approve of the husband abusing Lorna, she needs to get a grip and stop blaming her family for not giving her husband a break.  Why doesn't she seek help for herself so he can get a break.  She is lucky he has stayed as long as he has.  I grew up with an alcoholic mother and there were several times I was abusive with her because I was trapped living with her and the rage needed to be released.

If I were the husband I would get out and force her to take action for herself.  I am tired of morbidly obese people claiming disability and doing nothing about it.  They are not victims, the people forced to nurse them day and night are.

What on earth are you thinking?  You have a women on there, not 20 or 30 pounds overweight, but at least a hundred plus pounds overweight, and you do nothing but codle her.  I am tired of con jobs like this being expressed to the American people.  Because of people like this, ALL of our health care costs are through the roof, because we are paying for these obese people.   Why didn't you show her and the audience pictures of her heart and the massive amount of fat on it?  Why didn't you show her arterial scans to her and the audience so you could show the blockage in her heart and major arteries?  Why didn't you tell her the truth, which is, she is going to die an extremly pre-mature death due to her obesity?  This game you celebrities play, like being obese is acceptable, is exactly what we don't need.  How about growing a spine and be honest about exactly how tragic this really is, especially to my wallet, to everybodies wallet or purse. Then you call her partner "dream crusher", at least he is honest, which is more than you were.  John Bougae

My EX Boyfriend and my Husband

I am a big girl, really.  I have a large bone structure and I wouldn't be petite even if I was very thin.  Now...........my ex boyfriend never could accept me like I was.  Like Christian he was constantly on my butt everyday which only made me feel worse.

When I met the man I MARRIED he accepted me from day one.  He loved me exactly like I was when we met.  The irony of the situation is that I have lost more weight and become far more healthier while being married with my husband than I ever did with my POS ex boyfriend.  Encouragement and Praise go so much farther than ridicule and abuse

Just for the record I am not nor was I ever morbidly obese I am 5'9 and currently weigh 180lbs.

05/04 Overweight and Forgotten

I think ppl who aren't overweight don't realize one of the biggest reasons ppl are overweight is bc they think something is inherently wrong with that as a person. They get made fun of, criticized etc. So they think they are bad ppl. It wouldn't matter if they lost weight bc they still would be that bad person.

I think one of the keys to weight loss is first accepting yourself and loving yourself unconditionally. But unfortunately it's not allowed in this society. We're not allowed to love ourselves bc we are fat. Society tells us everyday that we are not ok the way we are.

Look at the commercials on tv today. For example, Nutrisystem has a grandmother who dropped from a size 10 to a size 2?! Grandmas aren't supposed to be a size 2. (Maybe some who are petite) but not everyone!!! It personally makes me sick to see that they are promoting this. They are basically telling us a size 10 is NOT ok and that we should aspire to being a size 2. We all have different natural weights for us ranging from zero to size 20. I certainly don't advocate morbid obesity but we need to just advocate loving ourselves. If we love ourselves we won't be so quick to put more food in our mouths.

I agree, I too have many medical problems that can't be solved by pushing myself away from the table. Even if you can get the weight off, what do you do with all the lose skin if you can't afford to have it removed its just as bad as being heavy.I have worked two jobs most of my life at the same time til my body just couldn't do it anymore. I know I have a problem with food too, but most "healthy foods" are not in my budget after bills are paid. I do eat chicken boiled or baked and salads to the point I should have a bunny tail.I do what exercises i can do given my pain and back and other medical situations, but I go thru it alone, every female in my family is over weight, I have had my stomache staple once already and after you have a child, doesn't work so well, it wasn't the kind they do nowdays. I have had many relationships, most with alcoholics and no its not the same. Most real drinkers are very thin, but they never said anything about my weight. I weigh 350lbs,currently,was down to 200lbs. before having my child 16 yrs. ago it has taken ke that long to get back up to where I used to be, I am ashamed but, don't  know what to other than having a restapling, but was told I might not be able to be put to sleep and make it thru it. For all of you that do lose and maintain it -i'm proud of you.
I have a sister that was in a massive car accident a year ago even lost her job and sits around all day. Besides therapy that this is all the exercise she gets. Guess what? she's not 600lbs. However she doesn't eat 5,000 calories a day. guess that's what makes the difference. she also has other medical problems or insurance. So quit making up issues to make it okay to be obese! remember you can't change what you don't acknowledge!

totally agree with you

Quote From: gryphgrl

I'm sorry but I have to disagree.  Yes some healthy food is more expensive then some bad food - buy overall this simply isn't true.  Yes a box of frozen fish is cheaper then fresh fish - but the battered frozen fish (bad for you) isn't cheaper then the unbatter frozen fish (good for you).  Extra lean ground beef isn't more expensive then regular ground beef - in fact, because the weight is made up of more actual meat and less fat you are actually getting more for your dollar.  And buying extra lean ground beef is definitely cheaper then buying ready-made hamburgers which are loaded with fat because fat is a cheap filler for food manufacturers to throw in there.

It's a myth that healthy food is more expensive.  MYTH.  And I did look at my grocery flyers today FYI.    Here is what I found:

Sausages or pork side ribes(high fat, high sodium, high calories) - 1.77/lb vs. fresh chicken breast - 1.77/lb

Ice cream's on sale - 5.99/2L - vs. frozen yogurt 3.49/2L

Fresh corn - 0.25/ear so for a family of 4 you could purchase 8 ears for $2 - vs. side dishes like fries ($1.97 per bag) or Sidekicks (bad for you) $1.99 each (supposed to be 4 servings).

Cucumbers - $0.79 each

Cauliflower - $1.47 each

Romaine lettuce hearts (3 - enough for about 3 family size salads) - $1.99

Snacks - ruffles or tostitos are $2.47 per bag vs. butter free microwave popcorn $2.97 for 6 bags!!!  Not to mention how much popcorn kernels you could buy and air pop for $2.47

Can of tuna (very good for you- makes about 2-3 sandwiches) - $0.97 vs. ham- $2.99/lb

I could go on but I really don't have to.  The fact is, everyone who can afford to buy groceries can make more healthy choices.  Maybe you can't afford to eat fresh salmon every night because it is very expensive, but certainly you can replace some awfully bad food like bologna with canned tuna or canned salmon.  Water costs less then high sugar juices and sodas.  It costs less to eat vegies as a side dish then most other options.  Maybe the healthy food you are looking at is the more expensive stuff and you just have to consider other alternatives.

Your right, no one did say that your shopping in the cookie isle.  We are simply saying it is possible to eat healthy foods at the same price as eating unhealthy foods.  It seems like you are getting overly upset about a simple discussion.  I'm sorry that you feel like your being attacked.    I do know my facts and I do use common sense in living a healthy lifestyle.
