(Original Air Date: 05/04/07) Dr. Phil speaks with women who say they feel forgotten by their loved ones because of their excessive weight. Lorna weighs 650-plus pounds and feels abandoned by her family. Lorna’s sister, Glenice, says Lorna got herself into this situation; now she has to take responsibility and get herself out. Lorna’s boyfriend, Blair, takes care of her, but Glenice says he’s not the Mr. Nice Guy he appears to be. She says he's really an abuser. Lorna says Blair is exhausted and stressed from the hard job of caring for her, and her family needs to help rather than drive him away. Is Lorna ready to stop accepting the abuse and start accepting help? Then, Sunni weighs almost 300 pounds and wants to pursue her dream of being a plus-size model. Her boyfriend, Christian, however, says she’s too fat for the runway, and she should leave that dream to the skinny girls. Sunni says she is big and fabulous, and Christian makes her feel like she should crawl under a rock. Will Sunni be forced to pick between her relationship and her dream? Share your thoughts here.

overweight

obesity is an expanding problem that needs to be dealt with.  The overweight women is in denial and causing  an unfair environment.   The first thing she should do is admit she is the problem and has a problem.  The body can only process food at a certain rate.  to keep eating is not solving the prolem..  As a truck driver I feel fuller standing up than sitting down which is when i eat.  To off set the prolem  i have started walking while my trailer is being loaded.  I have walked over 30 miles in the last 3 weeks.  This helps with the digestive system.  I have also have started drinking replacement meal such as slim fast.  It takes the first step to make a differance in life.  You are either part of the problem or part of the solution.  Failure is NOT a option.

Amazing thing

My wife did an amazing thing. About 2 years ago she lost over 2 hundred pounds in 18 months by changing things in her life. Now she has a whole new set of friends and I feel left out of her plans, parties, events. People think she's amazing and desire to hang out with her. I feel like I'm an embarrasment to her because I'm not included. So, one must be well adjusted to the new woman she has become after losing the weight.

Big people have big hearts too.

Lorna is a beautiful person. Through out my life i have learned many things from her. Her loving nature and careing ways have helped many people. My name is amanda and Lorna is my step mother. For the past Twenty years i have grown to love this woman like my mother, and as a small child she loved me like her own.  I want people to know that her weight is not from over eatting all the time like some people may think, at least from my point of view. And i have ate many meals in my lifetime with her. I have two Daughters. From day one they have been the light of her life, she has helped me become a good mother,  I am proud of who i am today and owe many thanks to this woman for teaching me so many of my life skills.

When i heard the news about the Dr Phil show I was so happy for her. I Pray that this is a break through for her and it gives her the motivation she has lacked for way to long.

It's about more than being overweight

I think it's sad for both women that they are overweight, not because of appearances, but for the sake of their health.  I was only slightly overweight, (and probably pre-diabetic), when I developed a rare disease called necrobiosis lipoidica diabeticorum, (NLD), that, twice, nearly cost my life, (due to complications).  So I can only imagine the risks they are taking in keeping the weight on.

However, the mere fact that they have reached out to Dr Phil shows a desire for change.  I doubt that anyone decides to become overweight, even if it happens.  I applaud their courage in allowing others to hopefully benefit from their stories.

The woman who wants to model has such a beautiful face and looks tall enough to do it.  Why not?  (Actually, I think both ladies have such pretty faces.)  Lets hope Dr Phil can steer them towards better health.

The show hasn't aired in my area, so I reserve judgement about the boyfriends and family.  I know from firsthand experience, that it is not easy on family members when one is ill - and obesity as severe as 650-plus is dibilitating, no doubt.

It's hard, I know

Grrrrr... I hate folks that think that it is all about what you eat and dieting to cure the overweight blues.   For some, that is indeed the case and I am happy that you fell into that basket.  It is easier to cure when it is simply an adjustment of what you eat issue.

For me...

1. I had an auto accident in Feb 04 that cause trauma induced lymphedema in my legs after my knees hit the steering wheel.  They have been permanently swollen up since then.  True, while my insurance existed under my auto policy, I got the treatment  that I needed.  Since my medical benefits under my auto insurance policy ran out, I have received no treatment.

2.  Applying for SSI disability benefits is a joke.  Can't do it, unless you are unemployed.  Where is the disability factor taken into consideration?

3.  So is applying for Medicaid being a joke.  A single person has to make less than 14,000, I believe to qualify.  So, if you are working and earning more than that, you don't qualify.  If you are earning less than 14,000, you can't make ends meet to have a roof over your head and pay ordinary living expenses bills.

4.  Yes, exercise can be a key in the factor.  While I have swollen legs and feet, the best resolve I have for them right now is to keep them elevated from swelling to much and having the pain that is associated with it.  Somehow, I haven't figured out how to exercise and keep my feet elevated at all times when I am not working.  If you figure that one out, please let me know.

5.  You mentioned that doctors can refer you to surgery, but if you don't have insurance, many doctors won't even see you.  While you go into the ER and they should fix you, I feel that the ER should be reserved for dire emergencies and not to go in there and say "Fix me!", while I wish they would.  If you aren't near on your death bed, I doubt they are going to rush you into the emergency room even if you do say, "Fix me!"

6.  I have a umbillical hernia that is going untreated because I have no insurance.

While these people that are on Friday's (5/04) show may have some eating disorder associated with their overweight problems (I don't know for a fact), I just wish people would stop being so quick to judge and just presume that it is.

Grrrr.... I just wanted to reach through the computer and say so myself!!

If Dr. Phil, or any other worthy benefactor, would like to pay for my surgeries, I would have no complaints, but I think a lot needs to be done to change the way the healthcare system works and thinks!!

When you are hurt and you have no help it is very hard to do anything yourself, I know, I have been there and I am very sympathetic to your problems.  I was also in a car accident and gained weight because I was not as mobil as I used to be, and plus depression set in. I am by myself, I am very independent and I know that if I do not take care of myself no one is going to do it for me.  Buying only healthy foods, drinking Slim Fast and swimming has helped me a lot.   I hope you get well soon.

It's easy to judge

Quote From: soulcatchr

IF your that overweight why in the world can you not do something about your weight? Dr's can refer you for surgery. There are diet programs which I just did myself to help you eat healthy. I find this like alcholism........just find help and make the choice to quit putting it in your mouth. When it comes down to it, your all by yourself. You should not have to depend on anyone to take care of you. For crying out loud........do something to change the situation that you are in. Opinions?
You never know what a persons life is like or what they are going through and it takes a lot of discernment and objectivity to consider another persons experience. Some people have food addictions and weight problems the way other people have a tendency to spout off insensitive and ignorant comments. When it comes down to it, we are all human, we all have feelings and even though we have to take complete responsibility for ourselves it is always easier when  another person seeks to help and support us rather than judge us. For crying out loud.....do something to make the world a better place as opposed to making it more diificult for those who are already struggling! Opinions?

insensitive and ignorant

Insensitivity and ignorance is an expanding problem that needs to be dealt with! The person who posted the above comments is uneducated about weight issues and is causing an unfair environment. The first thing the above poster should do is admit he is the problem and and has a problem. The human race can only process negativity at a certain rate. To keep judging is not solving the problem...

As an overweight person I am all to familiar with peoples ignorance, judgement, and complete insensitvity to this problem. These people know nothing of my medical or psychological history both of which are big factors in my being overweight. Often times these people have stupid suggestions for me like drink Slim Fast, assuming that this would help me without knowing my medical background. Others tell me to exercise more not having any idea what my life is like taking care of my household and kids. Nobody likes being overweight and I believe most people want to do things differently.

It takes positivity and support to make a difference in a persons life. You are either part of the problem or part of the solution. Failure is only an option if you believe in those who do not believe in you.

DO something about it?

I find it rather frustrating hearing people who think that you can just set your mind to lose weight and it happens.  I've done that time and again, only to fail and be so frustrated, words can't describe.  You obviously haven't known being disgusted with yourself for failing at the one thing you'd love NOTHING MORE than to do, but it keeps eluding you.  I'd get lap band surgery in a minute, but my insurance won't cover it or any complications evolving from it, and I can't afford it out of pocket.  So please, give me this pearl of wisdom you obviously possess, and tell me how to do "something to change the situation", "do something about your weight", or what diet program I can follow that can accomplish what healthy eating hasn't?  I've gone to dieticians, weight watchers, health spas, and nothing has worked.  Remember, there but for the grace of God go I, and you shouldn't simplify anyone else's condition if you haven't walked a day in their shoes.  I hope this woman gets the help she so obviously needs, and gets her life on track again.

05/04 Overweight and Forgotten

It seems that any other addiction can get government help, but an overweight person cannot get any help!  This makes me very angry.  Not all overweight people sit and eat all day long, some have medical problems that cause them to be overweight.  All some doctors seem to do is harp about it, and think that exercise is the answer to all our problems.
