(Original Air Date: 05/04/07) Dr. Phil speaks with women who say they feel forgotten by their loved ones because of their excessive weight. Lorna weighs 650-plus pounds and feels abandoned by her family. Lorna’s sister, Glenice, says Lorna got herself into this situation; now she has to take responsibility and get herself out. Lorna’s boyfriend, Blair, takes care of her, but Glenice says he’s not the Mr. Nice Guy he appears to be. She says he's really an abuser. Lorna says Blair is exhausted and stressed from the hard job of caring for her, and her family needs to help rather than drive him away. Is Lorna ready to stop accepting the abuse and start accepting help? Then, Sunni weighs almost 300 pounds and wants to pursue her dream of being a plus-size model. Her boyfriend, Christian, however, says she’s too fat for the runway, and she should leave that dream to the skinny girls. Sunni says she is big and fabulous, and Christian makes her feel like she should crawl under a rock. Will Sunni be forced to pick between her relationship and her dream? Share your thoughts here.

WHY?

The question shouldnt be how to lose the fat but better yet WHY are they like this?  Why are over half of Americans overweight or obese?  Why are our children becoming so fat at such a young age?  WHY is it only Americans who have such an fat population?  Does this have to do with turning on the depressing news every night and watching murder, murder and the war plastered to their TV screens everynight?  The typical american watches 4 hours of TV a day.  Is it that americans tend to take everything to heart, or should I say personally?  Americans have been proven to be more sensative towards matters of the heart...ex.  infedelity.  Americans are some of the most unhappy people on earth yet when compared to some of those that are unhappy  because they live in homes with no doors and dont even own shoes and you know I could go on.  It seems to me that most of overweight americans eat due to an ungrateful life .  Dont get me wrong, I know that there are problems in our lives that need to be fixed and the battering ram of mistakes the rest of the world throws at us is a lot to deal with but given what we have compared to some places on earth, I think that if we are a people could see it,  obesity would drop just as our happiness as a people has.

In my humble opinion,

Cass

Wow!

I can't believe what some people are saying on here!!  Just because a poster believes that a better diet and exercise is a good way to end obesity doesn't mean they 1) "are a perfect size 3" 2) hate or laugh at or make fun of obese people 3) are insensitive to the complex issues of weight gain/loss.

The reality is, many obese people do not eat healthy.  No one can argue with that.  Now, I didn't say all obese or over weight people do not eat healthy - I said MANY.  Certainly there are contributing metal, emotional, and medical factors but come on!  We have all seen the Dr. Phil shows with morbidly obese people that eat ridiculous amounts of junk food everyday - whole buckets of KFC, dozens of donuts, cases of soda.  And 99% of overweight people KNOW they don't eat healthy food.  Food is an addiction.  Sugar and fat and all that bad for us stuff is addictive.  It takes time and alot of work to over come any addiction and food is the same.  It's not something you can just change over night.

Healthy food is NOT more expensive (unless you live in a very remote area where they have to fly in your food like parts of Alaska or something).  Usually it's less expensive!  When I was a student I couldn't afford very much groceries so I filled up on fruits, vegies, and legumes.  Yes they do have a shorter shelf life but all that means is you can swing by the grocery store once a week and buy more.  I think the main problem is education.  Many people do not even realize how many calories or how much fat they are putting into their bodies - no to mention more complex things like cholestrerol, saturated fats, sodium, etc.  If you don't know what healthy foods are or taste like or how to prepare them then you are definitely less likely to purchase them.

It's basic science.  If you eat healthy and exercise regularly you won't be obese.  Yes, some people are naturally plumper then others - but having beautiful curves or a larger frame or even a bit of extra fat on your body isn't obesity.   To become 400, 500, 600 lbs takes years of abusing your body.  It doesn't happen because you forgot to exercise for a month or ate an extra piece of cake on your birthday.  We aren't talking about being overweight by 20 lbs or even 50 lbs.

Furthermore, no one has said it is easy to lose weight.  It's not.  It takes a complete overhaul of your lifestyle and can take years.  It took years to put an extra 100, 200 or more pounds on your body so naturally, its going to take years to take it off.  It takes an incredible amount of dedication, strength, and basic hard work.  There is no magic cure or diet.

Anyways, in regards to the show: she should boot his bum to the curb.  No one deserves to be treated that way.  All he does is make her feel even worse about herself.  That guy is pathetic.

Also SKINNY

Quote From: ceildh1

I am one of those "Skinny People " you seem to resent and despise, brought up with obese women all my life, so I don't know how they felt, I can understand the problem from another point of view ( and NO we don't all point and laugh).

Yes, family HAS to get onboard, tell me would you buy heroin for a drug addict, or a case of beer for an alcoholic ?  I doubt it, so why be expected to give an obese person say a bag of chips, instead of offering a salad ?  It is quantity and the quality of the food that counts, I honestly don't think the other poster was suggesting a starvation regeime.

Help them get motivated by going out with them, I'm NEVER ashamed to be seen with my Mother or my aunt, and those who do stare, well that's their problem.  I remember an incident at the Mall one day when a rude a-hole commented about my Mother,

" Boy, is that woman FAT" he said, to which I replied, " yeah, but you're ugly as sin, and at least she could diet. "  So yeah, I have heard the comments, and you know what when you are told all your life you look "just like your Mom " it does distort your own relationship with food, and your own body image, so like any other addict, it is NOTjust YOUR problem, it is a FAMILY issue, starvation and isolation are NOT the answer, but we do NOT have to feed it or enable it either.

I am also a skinny person brought up with obese women all my life.  I am Lorna's niece !!!  I've never experienced the feeling of being overweight, but I have experienced the feeling of respect for people as human beings.  I have been raised to over-look the physical appearance of people - and concentrate on what's underneath.  I too, have watched as other people pointed and stared at the ones I love, and even as a child would come to their defense.  I don't know why some people feel the need to be so cruel ( perhaps it's a way to make themselves feel better ); but I do know that offering a kind word to someone not only makes THEM feel good - it makes you feel good as well.  Kindness is contagous. It's a shame that more people aren't aware of this!

It's about lifestyle change

Quote From: fluffyfat

I don't know whether to laugh or cry at some of the "solutions" to obesity on this thread. If it was really as simple as eating fruit and taking a walk we would all be skinny.

Most of us can lose some weight by eating less and exercising more but the meaning of "less" and "more" changes over time.

Example: During 2005 I gave up all sweets and started walking 3 miles a day, every day. I lost 60 pounds.
During 2006 I continued to do the [ivery same thing[/i and gained 30 pounds.
What happened? Well for one thing, my body lowered it's resting temperature from 98.6 degrees to 97. It figured out it was getting less fuel so it turned down the thermostat.

I'm not unique. [b98% of everyone who loses weight will regain it in 5 years.[/b Our bodies have lots of ways of getting that weight back. It thinks a famine is going on. It's desperately trying to keep from starving to death.

Did you know that only 5% of the people who have bypass surgery ever reach normal weight?

Dieting is very, very hard. We're not giving up cigarettes or cocaine -- we're giving up something our body needs to live. It's like trying to give up breathing. And sooner or later, we always re-gain.

You are right, most people that loose weight do gain it back.  But this is not because eating healthy and excercising doesn't work - it's because most people that loose weight do not deal with their emotional issues that are the underlying cause of their overeating.  For example, many depressed people become overweight.  A depressed person could have a bypass surgery and loose all they weight they want, but if they never deal with their depression chances are the weight will come back because they never dealt with what was causing them to overeat, or the emotional side of things.  Sustainable weightloss requires a commitment to completely change your lifestyle - not just eat less.  This means dealing with your diet and nutrition, your exercise and physical status (including any medical problems that could be comtributing to you being overweight), and dealing with your head - emotional and mental issues.

This is why fad diets don't work and many people that have surgery gain weight back.  They don't deal with the whole problem.  They only perscribe a certain way of eating to reduce calories, or carbs, or fat (depending on which diet).  It's like dealing with a leaking roof by covering up the water damage with paint and plaster - you're only fixing the superficial or visable part of the problem without dealing with the underlying causes (the leaking roof).  Sure it looks better for a while but eventually your going to get the same problem back.

woe is me

Wow, Lorna, Lorna, Lorna.  Stop with the woe is me attitude and get up off your back side and do something for yourself.  It's not your family's fault you're in this situation and no one should put up with abuse.  You can only be a victim for just so long before you become part of the problem.  You talked about how NO One would take care of you.  Take care of yourself.  My guess is that in your condition you don't work and get your income from disability.  If you need help get a nurse.  It is not your family's responsibility to get you out of your mess and take care of you.  Yes, they can be there to support you and encourage you but it is not their job to fix this.  It is yours and yours alone.  There are so many avenues to get started and I'm sure Dr. Phil has offered you those avenues.  Now you have to start by getting up and dropping the woe is me attitude.  Do for yourself and get rid of the boyfriend.  He's not a nurse and he obviously is not a boyfriend right now either.  Good luck.

Sunni can lose 100 punds by getting rid of that loser!

I am sick of guys who think they can treat women any kind of way because of what they consider to be a flaw in them! Sunni is so pretty and there are plenty of men out there who would cherish and support her in the way that she and all women need to be treated. I think she is with him only because she doesn't think she attracts many men. Her boyfriend only approached her because he is a abuser and saw weakness in her like abusive men seek out. How can you feel good about your self when you have someone mean and uncaring whispering in your ear all the time? If Sunni sees this comment, I just want to say you are beautiful! Don't change yourself to please other people! I know plenty of good, attractive men who would love to have a girlfriend who has dreams and goals such as you do. Your boyfriend is only gonna tear you down. He should not walk in front of you, but with you! He is not gonna change and you will be better off without him! You can do bad by yourself! I sincerely hope that I will see an update on the show with you having dumped him! Please put yourself first Sunni. You deserve it!   And rock that runway show!

a lot of americans are over weight becouse of what they eat, and it has alot to do with what they feed the animals we are going to eat. it messes up some kind of gene i think and causes people to gain weight, if that gene gets messed up it dont matter how little you eat.

Sorry I disagree

Quote From: dorapug

Yes you could do that.  I wasn't implying that not to buy veggies and fruit because you are on a fixed income.   The FACT not an EXCUSE is that higher in fat less healthy foods are cheaper.  A box of frozen fish - cheap, fresh fish - expensive, bologna - cheap, lean turkey breast - expensive, should I go on for you?  Maybe you should pick up your local grocery store flyer and just take a glance at the prices of food for a family, then at their healthy alternative.  No one said that not buying the healthiest choices meant you were shopping in the chip and cookie isle.  It sounds to me that you jumped into a disscussion without the facts.  Maybe next time you should use COMMON SENSE and think about what it is you are typing.

I'm sorry but I have to disagree.  Yes some healthy food is more expensive then some bad food - buy overall this simply isn't true.  Yes a box of frozen fish is cheaper then fresh fish - but the battered frozen fish (bad for you) isn't cheaper then the unbatter frozen fish (good for you).  Extra lean ground beef isn't more expensive then regular ground beef - in fact, because the weight is made up of more actual meat and less fat you are actually getting more for your dollar.  And buying extra lean ground beef is definitely cheaper then buying ready-made hamburgers which are loaded with fat because fat is a cheap filler for food manufacturers to throw in there.

It's a myth that healthy food is more expensive.  MYTH.  And I did look at my grocery flyers today FYI.    Here is what I found:

Sausages or pork side ribes(high fat, high sodium, high calories) - 1.77/lb vs. fresh chicken breast - 1.77/lb

Ice cream's on sale - 5.99/2L - vs. frozen yogurt 3.49/2L

Fresh corn - 0.25/ear so for a family of 4 you could purchase 8 ears for $2 - vs. side dishes like fries ($1.97 per bag) or Sidekicks (bad for you) $1.99 each (supposed to be 4 servings).

Cucumbers - $0.79 each

Cauliflower - $1.47 each

Romaine lettuce hearts (3 - enough for about 3 family size salads) - $1.99

Snacks - ruffles or tostitos are $2.47 per bag vs. butter free microwave popcorn $2.97 for 6 bags!!!  Not to mention how much popcorn kernels you could buy and air pop for $2.47

Can of tuna (very good for you- makes about 2-3 sandwiches) - $0.97 vs. ham- $2.99/lb

I could go on but I really don't have to.  The fact is, everyone who can afford to buy groceries can make more healthy choices.  Maybe you can't afford to eat fresh salmon every night because it is very expensive, but certainly you can replace some awfully bad food like bologna with canned tuna or canned salmon.  Water costs less then high sugar juices and sodas.  It costs less to eat vegies as a side dish then most other options.  Maybe the healthy food you are looking at is the more expensive stuff and you just have to consider other alternatives.

Your right, no one did say that your shopping in the cookie isle.  We are simply saying it is possible to eat healthy foods at the same price as eating unhealthy foods.  It seems like you are getting overly upset about a simple discussion.  I'm sorry that you feel like your being attacked.    I do know my facts and I do use common sense in living a healthy lifestyle.
