(Original Air Date: 05/04/07) Dr. Phil speaks with women who say they feel forgotten by their loved ones because of their excessive weight. Lorna weighs 650-plus pounds and feels abandoned by her family. Lorna’s sister, Glenice, says Lorna got herself into this situation; now she has to take responsibility and get herself out. Lorna’s boyfriend, Blair, takes care of her, but Glenice says he’s not the Mr. Nice Guy he appears to be. She says he's really an abuser. Lorna says Blair is exhausted and stressed from the hard job of caring for her, and her family needs to help rather than drive him away. Is Lorna ready to stop accepting the abuse and start accepting help? Then, Sunni weighs almost 300 pounds and wants to pursue her dream of being a plus-size model. Her boyfriend, Christian, however, says she’s too fat for the runway, and she should leave that dream to the skinny girls. Sunni says she is big and fabulous, and Christian makes her feel like she should crawl under a rock. Will Sunni be forced to pick between her relationship and her dream? Share your thoughts here.

OVERWEIGHT AND FORGOTTEN

Quote From: ramair

I agree. Sunni may consider herself "big and fabulous",  but she needs to realize that she's also headed to an early grave. At 300 pounds, anyone is morbidly obese. And, in danger of serious heart disease and diabetes. Once she's eaten herself to that point, how "fabulous" will she feel?
I started gaining weight when my Dr. prescribed Prozac. I stoped taking it and lost a few pounds, I eat,all total, one meal a day and my fruit and started gaining again. How, I thought? I went to a Diet Dr. and he said I wasn't eating enough and told me to eat more. Don't you gain more weight if you eat more?

My goodness!!!

First let me say, I am fat. So I feel that gives me the right to talk about obesity. I am so sick of fat people not doing what they need to do. I have thyroid problems, I take medicine everyday. I watch what I eat but I still don't loose weight. Do I sit and whine or let anyone hold me back? NO!! Fat people who do this kind of pity party make the rest of us look bad. Its just being lazy. If you are so worried about your weight, do something about it. Wake up, no wonder skinny people make fun of us, I don't blame them. I blame the fat people who do these talk shows looking for sympathy. You know what you need to do, so get off the couch and do it, stop whining and feeling sorry for yourself. It makes me so angry. Its like these fat people think Dr. Phil is gonna tell them something they have never heard before about how to loose weight. Guess what HE IS NOT!!!!! Go to the doctor, do therapy, take the pills, exercise something besides the fork going to your mouth, I mean get real. Get over the pity party you are on and DO SOMETHING!!

It depends on what you eat. Some foods are really calorie dense. A tiny portion of these foods can have a lot of calories, be very high in fat, and leave you still really hungry. While a really big, portion of other foods can make you feel full while you've actually taken in far fewer calories. And, eating five or six times a day is better for your bllod sugar and metabolism than eating only once.  Maybe your Dr can give you a meal plan to follow.

I think it's nonsense that ppl say a person who's overweight is just going to drop dead. Havent you ever met ppl who are thin and skinny die? Don't they just drop dead? You've never met a person who just dropped dead from a heart attack but yet was thin? Both my parents were thin and died of cancer at young ages (one at 48 the other at 55). So give me a break, ppl, we all will die, we cant stop it.

Anyone can do it if they do it the right way

I'm a 20 year old guy who lost 76 ILBS last year.  I am 5'10'' 175 ILBS  from 251 before.  I hate when people say just eat less.  It took me over 1 year to completely regulate my appetite.  Skinny and average sized people are way to critical of bigger people and very ignorant how to the issues surrounding it.  I have a 300 pound dad and a 225 pound mom but I chose to say screw genetics and stop saying "my metabolism just isn't as fast as my friends" and start working out and eating better.  Now I understrand that I have the same metabolism as everyone else all along, I just snacked too much between meals and ate fast food too often.  My advice is only go for it if you are willing to make a life change.  Vanity is not a good reason.  Don't set your goals too high.  And If you want dessert, Dairy Queen is an iced cream that isn't super high in calories.  A large vanilla cone is only 480 cals (according to their website) since the creators of it are dieticians.  Deprivation of goodies is foolish.  Moderation is the key.  Excercise is fantastic for your heart and overall heath.  I jog 1.5 Miles a day for 20 mins and it makes all the difference in the world.  Little changes can make abig impact.  And I never did it for vanity.  I still have a nice belly at 5'10'' 175 Pounds but I don't care and have no plans to lose weight or sculpt anything b/c I love myself for me.  I'm a guy who wasn't told to lose weight by anyone and just did it for my health and b/c I want to feel like I'm in my 20's while I'm in that decade.

I am John.

Best Wishes To All!

And I hope you stick with what you are doing..

because it will be worth it, you'll have a long happy life. =)

Hi John,

Thank you so much for the positive message. Your struggle with being morbidly obese is a huge hurdle in life. My son learned so much from you..(I always tape the show) He sat in the chair and cried. In his watching the show YOU helped my son so much that if I could hug you, I would !!

My son is 21, 6'7" and weighed 449lbs. when he watched the show. He has lost 50 lbs. and it has been so hard for him, as you know. He feels better and continues the positive attitude to continue his journey to having a healthy future. There have been no fad diets or pills. He attended a few meetings with OEA and his sponsor is outstanding.

I am hopeful that you are having success in your journey as well.

Love & Prayers,

Brents Mom....Kim

It may be easy for you to lose weight, but its not easy for everyone. Unlike an alcolhol or drug addiction, a food addiction has to be dealt with in moderation- not complete cessation. It would be like a herion addict just having a little bit to get them through the day- when you are addicted to food, you STILL have to eat to live. If you are addicted to alcohol or drugs, you can remove yourself from situations that make it hard for you to keep clean- but try walking down any street in America and NOT finding a diner, Mc D's, BK, Dunkin D's, Starbucks.....

-Add onto that the fact that cheap food is starchy food- Veggies in America are more expensive than pasta, and cheap cuts of meat are fatty-

-Add onto that the fact that medical conditions and medications pack on the tonage- try having your thyroid out and wow that weight shows up fast!!

-Add onto that stress, insomnia, frustration---------

I agree, inevitably it is up to the individual to conquer this addiciton- but lets not criticize the only group in America who still allows themselves to be criticized without complaining about it and getting action! (Do you think Imus would be out of a job if he said something about fat girls who answered the telephone for minimum wage? Nope!)

I really must say, you speak as though you've walked  down that path. I've honestly said the same thing about food being an addiction  worse than alcohol or drugs. the addiction that you have to control. I speak from years of experience. I most defiantly can sympathize with anyone battling this monster. There is such an astigmatism that goes with being overweight. The hurt, embarrassment, fear, anger and loneliness. I wish all of those fighting this battle..good luck and please know that you are not alone..there are many  of us that have walked in your shoes, more than you know..

I understand what you're saying.  I agree that thin people die as well.  But, I do think you miss the point.  Being overweight or obese significantly increases you chances of developing live threatening conditions.  Other than heart and breathing problems, it increase the chance of diabetes and other severe health conditions.  It also will decrease the effectiveness of the body's immune system.  I could easily go on with confidence that health professionals would concur.

I know you mean well in your post, but there is a danger that some who read it may use it as justification to not make changes that would probably help them live longer and better quality lives.  We can all die at anytime, but why invite it by increasing the odds?
