Overweight Children

Sorry to hear about the overweight kids - My daughter is 14 and I worry about her b/c she all of sudden is consumed about her weight - she is always talking about her pudge....which she doesn't have......

I think today though kids aren't as active as we were 10 or 20 years ago - I know my kids I have to throw out of the house.....but we have started playing tennis at the school in the evening time and we also bought a basketball goal and we all (mandatory) play.  It is now a rule - we eat then we either walk, play tennis or basketball.

My sister had to deal with her weight for as long as I can remember - kids were very mean to her.  I was opposite - they worried about me not weighing enough.... But it is also now easier for her to maintain her weight because she has always had to be conscious of it than it is for me.  It is a new issue for me b/c I have only become overweight.  So now I am calling her for advice.

Hope it all works out for you.....

My prayers will be with you ......  Donnita

I'm so sorry for your disappointment....I was not able to have children due to my high blood pressure that could not be controlled by any medication that was safe to take while pregnant. Without getting too personal....we also tried in vitro 3 times with no luck. I can only think that it must be like going through a mourning process for a bit each month when you don't have success. I am glad you came to share and please know that I for one empathize with your pain. We adopted my son at age 5...he was a special needs adoption due to his severe hyperactivity and other issues he had due to earlier sexual abuse at the hands of his biological parents.......He was quite a handful to raise but he is a kind polite and compassionate young man...he is just his own worst enemy sometimes and of course he is still an expert at pushing my buttons.....I didn't mean to go off on a jag about myself but just wanted you to know how I can understand the loss and depression you feel each month.........Connie

Patti(with the wolf)

I thought your wolf looked rather serene and even spiritual....I looked up Warwick Teaching just to get an idea of what you do. It sounds very fascinating and I'm sure it keeps you busy. I was a preschool teacher for about 10 years or so...I always believed in the more open ended activities and letting children express their creativity. Just wanted to say hi and it sounds like you work in a great place......Connie

I'm also happy to hear that you are seeking a healthier lifestyle for your son. AS you well know it has become epidemic in this country...the rise of obesity in young children. On the other hand Kids are just bigger in size it seems then years ago. Mainly my message to you was don't jump on the "guilty mother" bandwagon....it seems when ever anything goes wrong we mothers are the first to blame ourselves.......as Dr. Phil often says you did the best you knew how...now you will work from there and as you know better how to handle the problems you will do better......It is obvious to those of us who know you what a fantastic mom you are......don't lose sight of that because of this issue..you'll go along and do what you have to for your kids as you always do...... Son & MotherTake Care My friend..how nice to see you......Connie

Tips? Hold on to your socks...

Quote From: nelle2

I'm a new poster. Looking forward to sharing tips on weight loss.

Hi!

I lost weight years ago and am happy to share, because it STAYS OFF....

I'm a great believer in soups. Easy to prepare (just chuck in whatever is allowed, add water, simmer...done! They fill up pretty well too. If you want to feel full faster, do not mix the soup, but leave it chunky. Seems to help.

Use strong herbs. They seem to help with the satisfaction too.

Don't like your veggies? Soup's the savior there too: Mix the soup, you won't even recognise what's in it. Add whatever flavorings you like, and if necessary close your eyes and drink ik out of a cup... Slowly. Then start on your 'real' meal, grilled meat, fish, whatever. With the trimmings that are 'allowed'. Your brain will have registered you started eating with the soup, but that will be mostly water with vegetables and maybe a smidgen of lean meat... Do count the calories, though.

Another good trick is for the infamous "munchies" ... Don't you hate those? They creep up on you at the most terrible times. Always make sure you have a stick of sugarfree gum with you. I used it to keep my mouth occupied and then concentrated on getting my mind occupied.

More tips will follow.

We have not met yet, but I have been down the road you are about to travel.  You have been given some VERY GOOD advise.  The unknown is always scary, but as Livy said ( I believe) you will gain the tools and support you need to overcome your eating disorder.  I too was anorexic - so very long ago before they even had a name for it.  I just thank God that I didn't do too much damage to my body.

You are fortuante that someone recognizes what is wrong - see this as a gift - an opportunity to really live again.

Wow - what an accomplishment.  Sounds like you've hit a plateau!!  Have you upped your exercise or changed your routine??  That helps.  Also, maybe you need to look again at what you are eating.  Plateaus come but be patient because you will break it - your body is adjusting.  You have done a tremendous job.  Kudos to you.  Lois
