(Original Air Date: 05/18/07) Many women dream of finding the perfect man -- one who's attractive, romantic, intelligent and even in touch with his feminine side. But what happens when he spends more time at the mirror than you do and pampers himself with manicures, facials and even carries a purse? Abbie says her husband, A.J., is high maintenance and takes forever getting ready in the bathroom because he’s tweezing, waxing, moisturizing and putting on makeup! A.J. is a self-proclaimed metrosexual and admits to giving his wife unwanted beauty tips. Abbie says A.J.'s flamboyant behavior takes a toll on their marriage. She wants him to act more manly, but is she sabotaging his manhood? And, Joleen says her husband, German, prefers to do the cooking and cleaning, but leaves all the man's work for her. She says she's forced to clean gutters, chop wood and make hauls to the dump! German says he does all the housework, and it drives him crazy when his wife unwinds with a beer instead of helping him with the chores. Joleen's father and brother say she used to be the princess of the family, but now German wears the tiara! Can this couple find a middle ground? Share your thoughts here.

Holy Wah

I have to agree with Dr. Phil.  It's not like these guys were very masculine before they got married.  They haven't changed so why do their wives want to change them.  Underneath it all both couples seemed to have a fairly decent friendship basis.  Definately not the kind of man I have or would ever want but this was the women's choice.  Kind of the old saying of you make your bed now lie in it.  I also agree that you need to decide between yourselves what roles (chores) you want to partake in.  If there is a chore that neither of you really wants to do.  Hire someone if you can.  If not, suck it up like the rest of us and do something that you don't like to do and learn how to do something that you don't know how to do.  That means you guys too.  Break a nail and get dirty.  You became part of this partnership so share in the responsibilities.  Respect must happen on both sides and thank the good lord that I have a manly man.  Good luck to you all.

They are gay and just don't want to admit it!

Hopefully the first guy won't read these messages!!  If I were in his face, I would HAVE to point out  that his teeth are CROOKED!  Take the face lift money and deal with the teeth!  The facial hair is flat out ignorant.  He looks like a fool.  That poor woman and adorable little girl,  If I were her I would be getting my own bathroom mirror - in another apartment away from him!   The second guy just wants his cake and eat it too, while he evidently sits on his fanny and stares at himself in the mirror.  She can end his show obsession with shoes, makeup and perfume easily - cut off the money that she earns!  Yes these women knew what  they were getting into, but you still have to feel with them living the reality.

Sounds like.......

Sounds like both of these guys would prefer to be women.  Do they need gender re-assignment?

I am with you. I think both those guys were gay, and only married to protect them from admitting it.

MetroSexual

I have always been with the "manly" men. The ones that work construction and the ones that are jerks. I do like having the feeling of being taken care of and I do not want to give that up. I finally found a man that is in charge and has a great job. The best part though is that he cooks. He also takes very good care of himself. He is not gay. Not even close. The guys I see on the show talk gay. He talks like a man and dresses like a man but he is so clean. He makes sure that his skin is soft and he is "groomed'. I love it. He still can take charge but he is a clean and respective man. It is possible to be "manly" and still be sensitive to a woman's needs.

I hate to cook. I am good at it but I am a little OCD. It has to be perfect or I don't want to serve it. He is not like that. He cooks and I clean. The house is always spotless. Together we have a 13, 9, 5 and 4 year old and the house is still clean. I am happy doing that and he is happy cooking. It is an even trade.

It is possible to find the perfect man. A clean man who has soft skin that will still mow the lawn. I am lucky.

05/18 Girly Men?

Quote From: stormyfun

Dr. Phil,

Today's show finally made me sign up to have my say.

Why in the world would women marry men like these?

The 1st couple had a good chance of working out their mirror problem by buying a makeup mirror with lights around it.  A great place for her to do her makeup.

The 2nd couple's problem - Dr. Phil, You did not even hit on the problem.  You seemed to agree with him that she was right.

She is the wage earner.  Attempting to bring more money into the home.  He is the homemaker.  He wants her to help out in the house!  Is he Kidding!!!  She is already wage earner and doing everything outside, repairs and yard work etc.  And now he wants her to help in the house too.  And to his expectations, not hers.  If you don't like the way others do the job, do it yourself.  If he wants to be a clean freak, let him.  Doesn't mean that she is suppose to be one.  It's not her nature.  She is more than busy with her head of the house role and everything else she does - because he can't or just doesn't want to.  I think he just doesn't want to.  And still he complains.

There is no reason he could not put away her clothes.  I have always put my husband's clothes away when I was not working and sometimes when I do.  Makes sense to me - finish the job.  For heaven sakes, he is a very spoiled person.  You seem to agree more with him than her.  She was the one with the problem - not him.  He has life very good.

I am a female in my 50's.  I have been 17 years married - 2 sons, 5 years single, married 19 years.  I have been lucky enough to be a homemaker.   And I have been the head of the house and the homemaker for 5 years.  Homemaking is alot of work.  Going out to work is a lot harder.   And very stressful bringing in the money needed to run the house.

And this guy complains she is not doing enough??!!  He doesn't even help her in the yard.  I have always done that.  Very unhappy that she is not the clean freak he is!!  Grow up and starting helping her!!

Marriage is suppose to be a partnership.  This guy is not pulling his share of the load.

I am married to a man that is a very clean nick.  In my opinion I am more down the center of the road.  We agree to be different.  He didn't marry me to be a clean nick.  I have to say he tried to change me and I couldn't change and I tried.  Upset my whole day.

I sure there is tons more I want to share.  Best to stop here.

Stormy

Actually, I know German, and he works, outside of the home, he brings home a paycheck.

I think if he takes the time to sort the clothes, wash the clothes, and fold the clothes, the least she could do is put them away.  If German were a female friend, who worked outside of the home, drove the kids to all their activites, cooked and cleaned, did all these things for her spouse and family, and after 4 days of having to look at the clothes, I would understand if my female friend got frustrated.  I'd let her know that throwing the clothes into the yard was a bit dramatic...but I would still empathize.  Even if my hypothetical female friend didn't work outside of the home, I still wouldn't call her spoiled for wanting a little help.  No one enters a marriage expecting to be a maid, female OR male.

German is a good guy.  A really good guy.  His wife knew what his personality was like when she married him.  If she's not happy with how the workflow is...address THAT.  Work on THAT.  I think it sucks that when a guy finally STEPS up and cooks and cleans and runs the kids here and there AND STILL WORKS he's considered "Girly"...

And what is that supposed to mean anyway?

I rather like being a girl.

Marie

I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed the CROOKED teeth, I was sitt'n here think'n the same thing. And may I point out that these men are not goodlooking men at all so I'm baffled as to what they see when they're getting dolled up in front of the mirror. I started out feel'n really sorry for the lady married to the bald guy but she (as well as the other wife) knew about his feminine ways before they were married. I was just think'n how messed up that is because that means that both wives fell in love with frail, feminine speaking, girlie funny looking men. Unlike these woman, I absolutely do not look for those qualities in a man.

05/18 Girly Men?

Quote From: gerene

Dear Dr. Phil:

When I was in college I met my first gay man. He became and continues to be a dear and

valued friend. One of the first things he taught me was how to utilize "GAYDAR". The first thing

he said was...If it crosses your mind...its probably true. With that said regarding your first

guest...HE'S GAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The man's wife knew it when she met him. She is now in a point where she does not want

to admit to herself or anyone else...that she ignored her instincts. Maybe when he comes home

with false fingernails and make-up she will face reality. Hopefully it won't take catching him with

another man!!

HELLOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

THIS HAS BEEN THE SMARTEST MESSAGE ON THE MESSAGE BOARD! NO KIDDING THAT GUY IS SOOOO GAY I FEEL VERY SORRY FOR HIS WIFE BECAUSE SHE OBVIOUSLY BELEIVES HIM WHEN HE SAYS HE IS STRAIGHT!! MY ADVICE FOR THE WIFE IS LEAVE HIM IN FRONT OF THE MIRROR AND RUN GIRL RUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Even Among Gays

Quote From: lovingone

I hope I don't stray too far from the topic, but I have to ask whats behind this?

Not too long ago I was reading a message board at another website and a man used a derogatory phrase, "f_g hag", which I guess is a reference to women who seek a romantic relationship with a gay or even feminine man.

It reminded me of my cousin and his friend.   Apparently my cousin is gay. He never said anything but he has had a male roomate ever since I can remember and even adopted a son, but has shown no interests in women romantically.  Never the less he had a female friend that became a friend to our whole extended family.

My cousin has now moved but his "friend" is still coming to our family gatherings and we have kind of adopted her.  I was taken aback when my grandmother revealed to me that when my cousin first started bringing his female friend around, she acted like she wanted a romantic relationship with my cousin.

My cousins friend is now in her 50's or 60's and has never married or had kids.   I thought about the "f_g hag" comment and wondered if there is some kind of woman who is prone to chase gay guys?  Is she unattractive?  Has she had abusive relationships with traditional acting men?  Is she affraid of being dominated?  Has she had so little experience with men that she doesn't know how they are suppose to act?  Is she that desperate?

It's gotten to the point where I have wondered about MYSELF.  I'm suppose to be this sports loving woman who worships alpha male athletes, but...

I haven't found Mr. Right yet.  I have noticed that some gay guys are cute.  I have admired some gay guys for being courageous in the face of discrimination.  I sometimes think that I wouldn't mind being the dominate one in the relationship.

If anyone has any thoughts I would love to see them.

While I am not gay, I have known a few during a long life, and while the traditional thought of a gay man is femine, there are a heavy percentage that are obviously male, they can be bodybuilders, and hard workers, with beards and tatoos.  Gay is a sexual decision for some, and it affects no more in their life than their choice of partner.

So be careful what you wish for, you might end up with an average Joe, who just isn't interested in you sexually.  You wouldn't be dominant, just unwanted.
