Trying to Quit Smoking?

Quote From: linda12k

Hi Everyone !!!

In about 5 more hours I will approach my 2 year anniversary of being smoke-free !!!! This is something 2 years ago I thought would never happen. I would quit for a couple of days, maybe even a month once, in my 34 years of smoking. Now I have 2 years behind me. It was the support of this board that truly helped me quit. It took other smokers wanting the same, that we found support in each other. To all that are thinking strong about quitting, you will have a new lease on life. The nicotine chains are one of the hardest drug to fight. To all that want to quit, find support, find your aids in helping you break free of the chains. And read, and read the posts that are on this board and in the archives. No matter how much we loved smoking we don't want to go to our grave smoking.

I can say now that it does get alot easier with time. Now it  comes as a passing thought, smoking.....I hope in all my postings I have enlighten someone, to help in quitting. It is a hard struggle, but a struggle you'll never regret. Keep trying, what didn't work for you before try something different in quiting. And most of all believe in yourself that  you will succeed, and you will.

Congratulations Linda

I remember the date I quit the day I picked up my mothers death certificate the cause lung cancer and it also said did cigarettes contribute to the death and it says yes.  We all have some motivation and your right whatever breaks that chain.

No willpower

Quote From: ronda72

If you truly want to quit you have to be able to throw away those last 10 smokes, I cut and flushed up a whole carton and I live in MI they cost about 55 dollars a carton.
Well, evidently I have no willpower at all. I went back out and bought 2  pks, Monday. Decided I couldn't do the cold turkey thing. So now I am slowly trying to cut down each day. Hopefully by April 15th. A date I can shoot for. I'll have better luck.

I can't say anything about your "willpower", but you have the "desire" to quit. That's a step, with quitting, it is tiny  baby steps that lead you to freedom from smoking. We have all did what you have done many, many times. Don't beat yourself up over it. It took this board for me to realize that is the nicotine that has control of you. Your mind will tell you anything so you keep the nicotine flowing into your veins. You need to have a plan, get the patches, get a prescription for Wellbrtrin ( it takes the edge off of quitting), heck check out Chantnix, that's suppose to help in your need for nicotine. Buy an inhaler that's what I used to get me over the rough spots. Then after you are ready take it one hour or one minute at a time. They all add up, just don't give up. I smoked 34 years, and there was a many times I thought I'll never be able to quit.

At least when you went out to buy cigarettes, you bought 2 packs not 2 cartons. I'm here for you, just don't give up. One step at a time, one minute at a time, you'll be smoke free before you know it..

Thank you for the congratulations.

I am very sorry about your loss of your mom. That was a hard motivation for you. How long have you quit? And long did you smoke?

I also had lung cancer, but had my  whole left side removed. And yet when you speak of smoking, I smoked a pack  or a pack and a half a day. Some people can smoke 2 or 3 some 4 packs a day.  For sure it will happen some day.

I wanted to quit so many  times but always seem to weak to make it work. But back then my plan was to just  put them down cold turkey  and say  not  again.  That never worked for me. When I came to this board and talking with others, that's when I realized you need a plan and most of all the support of others in your same situation.

hello Linda,

I

Smoked for about 15 years and it will be 8 months since I quit the fifteenth of this month.  My mom died August 30th 2006 and that will be my year goal August 30th 2007.  She was diagnosed and died within a year.  I have never seen suffering like that; you are survivor praise the Lord above Linda.  My mom went from a beautiful, vibrant woman to a human skeleton with swollen legs and feet.  I hate to be so graphic but anyone struggling with smoking heeds these words.  My mom fell onto the floor one day (in the bathroom) and laid there for hours until Hospice found her.  My mother signed up for an experimental Chemo just for the hope of living a few more months but it eventually drained her of the frail existence she held onto.  It is still a struggle but with every passing day it does get easier.  Soon people that pass you that smoke will smell horrible to you, I still turn to my husband and apologize for smelling that bad when I smoked.

Hi Karen,

When I first read your posts, it was Good Friday, I was in a hurry to get to church by noon, and you know when you are pressed for time you try to squeeze in one more thing. I popped in on the computer to see if  there was any new post. Your post brought a tear to my eyes. How wonderful for someone to recognize your effort in helping others. Thank you, thank you !!!!!!

Karen,

You are doing great !!!!!!!!! You have been over some of the rough spots in quitting. And you  came shinning  though. Way  to go !!!!  I think the tool-bar is probably something I will always keep on my computer, it helps keeping me  grounded, of how far I have come. Whoever came up with that idea, it was a really good one!!!!! Kudos to you Karen..

Hi Ronda,

So sorry that your mom had to suffer so. Cancer gives no warning !!! One day your fine, or you think your fine, the next you have a spot on your lungs. And the roller coaster ride begins. But we all learn from one another. That is one of the reasons I come to this board to post. I have witnessed my brother-n-law dying, my brother, and myself of lung cancer.

When my brother-n-law was diagnosed, it took exactly 6 months from the date for him to pass. At that moment I still smoked, but after his passing I quit for maybe 1 week !!!! Picking them back up for just a couple of smokes thinking I could put them down anytime now.........WRONG...... I was just as hooked as I would have never laid them down to begin with. Nicotine might physically leave your body after you quit smoking, but your brain reminds you of what it was like to smoke. That's what I want to get across; N.O.P.E. not one puff ever !!!! That one puff for just  an instance, it's like you are hooked again !!!!! Then to quit again.....like hell all back over......But a person can do it, with support, and a belief in yourself.

I know I cannot ease your pain in the loss of your mom. But you coming to the board and posting might help some else in quitting. We'll never know how we are "paying it  forward" with our experiences.

On the 15th of this month "Tax Day" , you can let off a balloon of one relief,,,,smoke-free !!!!
