You're not alone. Meet others who know just what you're going through, and together we'll get closer to Dr. Phil's vision for a smoke-free America.

There is hope!

Quote From: dmjune

Hello, I'm new at this so work w/me. I noticed you started out on the "depression" board but I can't seem to find the "category" that suits me. To put it all out on the table: I've lived away from home for 6 yrs, trying to do something different in another state. (family life was fine but didn't want to freeze to death in the upper Midwest and moved to the beach). Since then my family has gotten closer to one another and I find myself spending a lot of $ to visit. Also, I've gone from one job to the next, looking for that golden ticket. I found that 3 yrs ago at a law firm as a paralegal. Loved the work, loved the "family" and the boss. As of 5/11 I was laid off w/another worker due to the slow real estate market. Now what? I am a smoker, had planned to quit, cut down on drinking and finally use the club membership I got for X-mas. But that all went down hill since my unemployment and can't get out of this funk. I don't know what day it is-'cuz who cares when you're not working, my cat's feeding times depend on my wake-up times, and I let my "laundry chores" go to hell. I struggle to find anything to put on just to take out the trash! I'm looking to chat w/people in this similar situation. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thx-DJ
Well, I came to this site to help smokers, because I feel like I found a miracle in Chantix, a prescription to quit smoking. However, I can't read your story and not reply. This must be so hard for you-your family is far away, you don't have a job, you want to quit smoking, and you are in a funk. Clearly, life is rough for you right now.  Your story makes me sad. I sit here and try to think of what to say. I have been abused by my ex-husband and would probably be dead today if I wouldn't have left. That was so hard-I felt like the life was sucked out of me. I just want you to know that this advice is not coming from someone who hasn't been through any hard times.   I'm sorry that all of this is happening to you. By the way- today is Tuesday.  I hope this advice helps: get your a*s up, wash some workout clothes and a nice outfit, get up early, go walk on the treadmill (this will make you feel better), look for a job-another law firm perhaps, don't kick yourself anymore-you can quit smoking, there is hope, eat something healthy (you need strength), PRAY, oh yeah, feed your cat.   I  don't mean to sound harsh, and I am no doctor, but I do know that laying there is not going to make you feel any better. As Dr. Phil would say   "How's that  workin for ya?".Don't waste another day-life is short-and even though yours may change alittle, it's still yours and it could be worse. We   have soldiers fighting for us right now-they want to sleep in their own bed and hold their babies and would probably give anything to be home. That is something that we all need to think about, but especially when we think things couldn't get worse. You will get through this, and remember to help others when you do-that is therapy in itself. Best wishes!!  Now, get off of the computer, you've got laundry to do.  I'll be checking the boards!

any feedback would be so appreciated.

Bobbi

I understand you have a reason to be scared but don't let that defeat you Bobbi, you CAN do this.  You're looking at it from the wrong place it actually gets easier not harder.  The tearful part I think thats normal I remember being quite weepy,  thats a normal reaction to changing your life.  Embrace this time its uncomfortable but you'll remember it fondly in a few years.  Its gonna be alright.  What made you decide to quit after 50 yrs?  I'm really impressed by that.

Wish You The Best,

April

Yes, I am taking Chantix. It is amazing. I consider it a miracle drug. After 3 weeks I am down to 1-2 cigarettes a day from a pack a day!! My cousion is taking it and she smoked 2 packs a day-she hasn't smoked in 2 months. It's crazy how time goes by and you realize "WOW, I haven't even thought about a cigarette!!". It's about $100 dollars for a month supply, but well worth it.  My cousin and I both didn't sleep real well for several nights during the first week , but that went away. You may dream more than usual that first week. Also, we both experienced some nausea, so it is important to drink a lot of water and eat when you take it. Stick with it, though-it's unbelievable.

Bobbi, I hope you have stuck with it and not smoked. You are doing such a great thing for yourself. What great encouragement April gave you. I wanted to let you know that I am taking Chantix and can't believe the results. I could go on and on, but I'm starting to feel like an infommercial so I'll just say that I think Chantix is a miracle drug. I have smoked for 15 years and was actually scared/nervous to be a nonsmoker, yet I hated myself for smoking. This was the answer for me and everyone I know that has taken it. Try it if you're not successful with the patch, but if you are successful then congratulations and you should be very proud of yourself!!!

Good luck to you Bobbi!!!!  Listen...........just hang in there and honestly it does get easier..........promise!!!!  I was a smoker for about 20 years and came to the decision that I'm ready to give up this useless habit.  I did try the patch but it made me so sick to my stomache that I stopped using it.  I used it for a few days though and apparently that was enough to get me started.  So far I have been smoke free for well over 4 months now and honestly (I swear I'm not lying to ya) the cravings are gone.  Actually, when I'm shopping sometimes I can smell the sent of smoke on someone several eisles over and it dosen't smell too nice.  Get this...........two days ago I was garage saleing and as I walked up to look at a table an older women stopped (I never met her before) and said "hello" and then as she started walking away she said "man..........you smell nice".  I can't tell you the last time I had a complement on my perfume so believe me when I say that keep up the hard work because it is worth it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I Quit Sunday

I just quit smoking on Sunday and today has been a hard day for me. I really can't describe how I feel...I think it may be some withdrawals.  I am using the 21mg patch, however I have not used it at night.  I didn't smoke while I was sleeping so why do I need the patch then.  I am using suckers when the cravings get bad so I have something in my mouth and something for my hands to do. I hope that I perk up and the bad cravings stop soon.   Does anyone know about how long it takes for the bad cravings to go away?  On the patch box it said 24-72 hours.  Does anyone have any tips to help with the withdrawals?

I had a hard month but made it

Well it has been 10 months and 3 days; this past month put me to the ultimate test.  My husband’s place of employment went on strike, serious money problems and to add to the mix my spouse and I had a few rough patches.  I actually asked a gal at work for a smoke but thank the lord she was out of them.  I went to the store with her, and by then I had my will power back and didn't smoke.  I have a phrase I play over and over in my head cigarettes don't calm nerves that nicotine is actually a stimulant.  I made it, I told my husband when my year is hear on August 15 th I want to throw myself a party.   Oh and if I can handle my mother in law coming to stay with me for a week(she lives in a different state) and she smokes (outside of course) then for anyone thinking it's hard to quit.................. yes it is but you will be so proud of yourself and you will smell better<G>

Good job, I didn't use the patch at night either.  I walked to help with my withdrawals.  You will feel better and it will help with the weight gain.  One tip as soon as you can, get off the patches.  I actually got addicted to them and stayed on the 14 mg one for 7 months, and then I started back up for almost a year.  I also started beading and making jewelry.  When I quit this time I used the patch for 3 weeks and got off from it.  Also remember nicotine speeds your metabolism up so it will take a while for it to normalize again, so the walking helps with this problem.

I take wellbutrin sr for bipolar and it helps cut cravings.  In a few days I have cut my smoking in half!
