Keep Trying!!

Quote From: joykelly

Thought I'd take a look at this board.  so far it seems everyone quit so I wonder about support for us still smoking.  Having said that, out on a limb, I wonder why I can't seem to quit.  Why do I sabotage myself everytime?  I am 42 and have smoked since I was eleven.  I can remember my first cigerette just like a drunk can remember his first drink.

I had given up as I just fail each time, and then my youngest was watching a commercial on TV about quitting.  He looked at me and said" I know you can do it Mom, you are the best and can do anything you want too!"

So where is the best place to go to get a plan? Don't say the doctor as I have no insurance.

  Thanks for listening

 Hi Joy!

Keep trying... Never give up! Do it this time for your family. I know it is hard, and the longer you smoke the harder it is, but you can do it. Without insurance that rules out specialists/Rx's, but there are a lot of free organizations out there. There are free support phone #'s (can find on the web) and free stop smoking groups/meetings all over.  Take one day at a time. Challenge yourself . Keep thinking about your children/look at pictures of them each time you want one. Think about living longer and being around as long as you can to see THEM do Everything. Sometimes just having someone else believe in you helps.... You youngest sure does and I believe you can do it too.  Take Care and send me an email anytime you need to vent.

Thank you for your post. You have given me food for thought.  Maybe if I start thinking of the kids, etc. instead of the smoke....You have given me a direction.  Thanks bigkid.

Day one

Well day one is coming to a close and it wasn't so-so bad. I had my moments but they went away. I am hopeful that I can do this this time.  I think with all the tools and support I have I can do this.meter reading helps. 23h 6m 9 cigs not smoked $2.21 saved and life saved 45 min. I do have a headache though maybe if I get some sleep it will help.thanks for all the support.

Hey!

I was happy to hear that day 1 wasn't so bad. Where do you find this meter reading stuff?

Good luck in the days ahead.  It has been 1 week today for me. I have had terrible headaches all week, but am starting to get used to them now. (Sad!!) I guess my next habit will be popping pills....(smile) -  Take Care

Hi. I am glad I could help. Like I said just don't give up. We need to take control of our own health... We need to not let something like smoking control our lives. I know easier said than done. It has been exactly 1 week for me smoke free. It has been so hard this 2nd time around. I quit for 51/2 years and started again in Sept. '03. I would smoke forever if I could, but I know it would eventually kill me... Besides, just like I told you to think about your kids I need to do this for my future children. I have been trying to get pregnant for 21/2 years now without luck. I know smoking affects fertility so I thought I would stop now while I'm ahead... I would need to quit for 9 months anyway, so why not before - under my control?!

Tke care. I am pulling for you. Keep me posted!

here is the link for the meter:
www.silkquit.org/meter.html
click on the dlownload silkquit 02.60 for windows. Save to your desktop and then install the software. The first time you run it, it will ask for your quit date, how many cigs a day you smoked and the price of a pack of cigs

Trying to Quit Smoking?

this board really picked up. I'm been on this board for a while now, trying to help when I can.  This is what I discovered from this board.

1. Get a prescription of Wellbrutrin or Zyban; this takes the edge off of quitting, you have to be on it 1 to 2 weeks before you actually give them up.

2. Pick a QUIT date.

3. Get one of these; nicotine gum, inhaler or patch, to get you through the day, I personally used the inhaler.

4. Post often on the message board of how you are coming along.

5. Find something to keep hands busy.

6. Get yourself a meter, www.silkquit.org. , it is an incentive to keep going, once your meter is going on how long you have quit.

7. Read some of the old postings on this board, to see what worked for others, also the "archives".

Nicotine is one drug that will tell you  "just one more time", and if you do, you are  hooked again.

I really believe everyone that has smoked, has tried many times to put them down, hopefully this will be the right time for you !!!!!

I, myself smoked 34 years, a pack a day. I am also a Lung Cancer survivor, minus a left lung now.

Day 2

Day 2 is harder then day one was I don't know why but that is all I keep thinking about is cigs.Good thing I am to lazy to take the kids out to go get a pack. I thought about it and told my oldest that we were going for a ride to get smokes and she said "no" so that was that. Bed time soon so I think I can say I made it another day.

One day, 21 hours, 19 minutes and 24 seconds. 18 cigarettes not smoked, saving $4.33. Life saved: 1 hour, 30 minutes.

 I hope this gets easier.

 I hope this gets easier.

The 2nd day was the hardest for me, too. The first day wasn't that bad at all and I was thinking, okay I can do this, I can do this. But then the 2nd day, I woke up with such a headache and it didn't go away all day. I was extremely moody and irritable to say the least and had absolutely no patience with my kids. I know if I would have had access to cigs, I would have given in and probably started smoking again and wouldn't have made it, but I don't drive and my husband was at work. So, I would have had to put my 3 and 4 year old sons in their stroller and walk down to the store, which isn't that far, to get some. But, I was like you. thankfully, that seemed like too much work and I just kept praying for the day to hurry up and end. The 3rd day was about like the 1st day, not too terribly bad and since then it has gotten easier everyday. I can't really say that I wish I could smoke now, that has passed, but I do miss the "time-outs" it gave me from my boys. So, I have started just going to sit out on my back porch for a few minutes at a time throughout the day, about as many times as I would have been if I were still smoking and just sit there and take a few deep breaths. That has helped me a lot. Congrats on 2 days down!! You have made it through the hardest part!!
