no smoking

I quit smoking when I found out that I was pregnant - my daughter is a little over 3 weeks old now and I am just DYING for a cigarette. I had maybe 3 cigarettes while I was pregnant and am trying very hard to stay away from cigarettes. I know it sounds silly but there are a lot of things that have helped me not have a cigarette. First of all I live in Wisconsin and it's too cold outside to comfortably enjoy a cigarette. Second, I am a single mom and could really use the extra 4 dollars a pack to put towards any needs my daughter has. Third, when I am stressed out and am most tempted to reach for a cigarette I walk around my house and find other things to do to keep my mind off of it. Sitting still or watching TV makes me just crave cigarettes more and more. I often clean things or spend time with my daughter or on the phone to get away from the cravings. I also told my friends who smoke that I am not going to smoke again so they try not to smoke when I am around, or at lesat don't invite me out for a cigarette or make it obvious that that's what they are doing. I also suggest physical activity and avoiding places that allow smoking, especially places where alcohol is served. If you and your spouse are smoking make some kind of pact or deal. Or take money that would have been spent on cigarettes and save it up and then do something fun with it. You'll be surprised.

Way to go !!!!!! You are to be commended for being so strong in a pretty stressful stage in your life. The advice you are giving others is wonderful. I wish you and your daughter the very best. One little suggestion when you want a cigarette when watching TV or on the phone (that was my biggie, on the phone and a cigarette) is to do breathing exercisers. Your lungs were used to doing the extra inhaling and exhaling. For me when things get a little stressful. A couple of deep breaths and slowing exhaling just like you are smoking, has a real calming effect. Wish you the best and keep us posted.

Checking In

Ok, it took several weeks, but my husband and I got the Chantix and started last Tue. 12-12-06.  Today, We started the blue pills, but we had already cut back from a pack or more a day to less than 6, in less than a week.  Now that is some miracle drug for a 29yr. smoker.  My hubby said that he smoked 1 early this morning....I have not had any in almost  24hrs.....

My worst time sofar is when I am on the computer....

Fantastic !!!!! I have heard great things about Chantix. If you know your hard time is at the computer, maybe substitute with a straw or pencil. Substituting will help alot, till you have developed new habits. Keep me posted.

It is hard to quit smoking.  It's hard to get out of bed and and hard to go to work.  There now that you read that you can go back to your self distructive behavior.  Sorry but none of those things are hard to do, it's what you have been told and led to believe.  It would have been easier for me to quit smoking if some one would have told me what to expect and how to deal with it.  Ok so what I am about to tell you will not work for you , but do not stay in bed all day.  On December  2 1994 I smoked my last cigarette after 20 years of smoking.  I used anger and discipline towards something positve.  The first day was a Saturday so I chewed a lot of sugarlees gum, drank a lot of water, and kept busy all day.  The more I ignored the nicotine wave that over powers you the smaller the wave got.  After 3 days of this I was free.  To be free of  nicotine is experiencing part of what true freedom means.  So a few days later my blood started to flow, no more restless legs, but my body felt like it feels when say your arm falls asleep.  So I wore legs weights and wore them for 3 straight days including sleeping.  You see I was working out while sleeping.  after a few weeks I signed up at a local gym and have exercising ever since, It is called resistance training not resistance to training.  giving up and bad habit and taking up a good one makes a world of difference.  Do not wait for New Years Day to arrive to start a resolution.

The New Year and A New You?????

Well, a new year will be here soon !!! Can you believe the year past went by so fast. When you look back, time does pass by very quickly. With quitting smoking the time might seem forever in your process, but once you passed a day, the next comes quicker. Do whatever it takes to get to the next hour, then the next and a day will be a small goal you have achieved !!!! Make small goals for yourself in quitting. Those few days add up quickly to a month and so on. If you were lucky enough to not have any health problems. Quit before they develop. Once you quit the freedom you achieve, will be the biggest accomplishment !!!!!!

HAPPY NEW YEAR !!!!!!!!!!

Happy New Year to everyone!!!!!!! A New Year, a new beginning? We all have some goal in mind that we would like to accomplish. Maybe in times past we would say "I'm just going to quit smoking the first of the year, and that's that !!!! Well, when that first day starts, your  beginning to get nervous about  wanting to put them down the cigarette that was your "best friend". Especially if you have tried to quit before. This is the year that you need to do it a little different !!!!!!! Come to terms that a lot of the thinking you are doing is the "nicotine talking".

"I can't seem to go for one day without wanting to just go to pieces"

"Well if I just have one after I haven't smoked in a half of a day, I'll be O.K."

"If I just cut back to half a pack in a day, then I surely can put them down anytime"

There are so many things you can tell yourself about quitting, but what you are doing is "fooling yourself".........

Come to terms that "Nicotine" is one powerful drug addiction !!!!!!!!! In wanting to overcome this addiction, educate yourself on what is out there to help you achieve your  "GOAL".....

There is Chantix or Wellbrutrin to help your nerves calm down a bit (these are prescriptions only). Then the aids you can use to substitute from the cigarette to, gums, patches, inhaler, lozenges. Then most of all find a person that will help you in your time of need, someone to talk to during the rough times, this board is supportive. Then some type of physical exercise to help get rid of frustration building.....Quitting smoking will be one of your "biggest accomplishments in life".... Don't let yourself down, there is a lot of knowledge on this board to help you quit..........It's just your life !!!!!!!!
