Hang in everyone and nice to see you all staying with it.

Hugs to all from up north!

Need support/advice

It's great to see that so many of you have quit smoking, congratulations!

I would so much appreciate any advice. I have tried everything, but I guess my willpower is 0.

The worst thing is that I am a very determined person and have no problem in my schedules and obligations, and yet I am so frustrated with my "i cannot live without a cigarette' attitude.

I'm mostly surrounded by non smokers, to whom I cannot really turn to for support or advice because on this topic I am usually berated and this makes me feel even more frustrated! so I naturally smoke more. I hate the fact that I lie to myself, I hate the fact that as a mature adult I'm always saying to myself " tommorow morning I'm going to give up" and I never do.

Everything else in my life is great, family, work etc, but this smokong is just wearing me down, I know it's wrong and I just cannot stop!

Any advice would be so much appreciated!

I also tried quitting many times, with no success. Than about 2 months ago, I decided enough was enough. I decided I would smoke that night and the next morning until I left to work. I had 3 cigs left, which are still in my truck. The other times I tried to quit, I thru all remaining cigs I had away. After about 5 days with no cigs, I decided I need something. The only thing I had not tried was the nicotrol inhaler, so I called my doctor and she called in a prescription for me. You can use 16 a day, the most I have needed was 6. Maybe it was keeping the remaining cigs that helped, knowing they were there if I needed them. Or maybe the inhaler, or maybe I was just ready. I had smoked for 34 years, so it was and is still hard. It is getting much easier though. And it was not as hard as I thought it would be. In the past 3 years,  have adopted 2 babies, maybe it was wanting to be able to watch them grow. Just put your mind to it, and as they say take it one day at a time. Good luck to you and keep us all updated on your progress. Gina

Thankyou for replying!  As I said earlier I am surrounded by non-smokers, they cannot understand that I just 'can't give up cigarettes", but if I could have I would have done it long ago.

Nicotrol inhaler?, I'm in Australia so I'll have to check up with my Dr. to see what the equivalent to that is here.

I too have smoked for over 30 years, I am sick and tired of it.

Thankyou for not berating me and telling me that I should have a 'stronger willpower"

You wrote, " I decided enough was enough",   Gina, seeing this in writing has made me think more positive, .

I am not overreacting when I say that I am so thankful that you thought it was important enough to reply to my post and give me support!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am going to try your method. In reading your post I saw that I had always made such abig deal to myself about giving up, and it is actually like you say "enough is enough".

Thankyou for making me smile today and for the first time know that I actually am going to try.

Wishing you warm and happy moments with your babies!

don'tknowwheretostart

I am a closet smoker.  I supposedely quit about 5 years ago when I was pregnant with my first daughter.  I quit until I had her  then started again.  Same thing with my second daughter.  Now I lie to my friends and family - well they don't ask and I don't tell.  My husband knows of course - but I just hide it.  I smoke outside and honestly only smoke 6 to 8 cigs a day but want to be rid of it for good!  I don't know how to get rid of these last few.  It was easy when I was pregnant - I just threw up when I smelled it, but I don't plan on having any more babies so now what??  Should I quit cold turkey?  Should I taper and then go cold turkey?  I actually got sick from the nicotine patch about 12 years ago - too much nicotine for me according to the doctors.  Should I try the losenges or the inhaler?  Any suggestions are appreciatied!!

Hi, I have been in those shoes of a closet smoker. I got where I would stay at home so much more just so I could smoke. Majority of my family didn't smoke, so when you have a bout with cancer (lung), they assume you are going to give it up!!!! I did for a very short time, then went back to it, I came across this board, and that is what pulled me over to the other side. A closet smoker, was no easy task, make sure you didn't smell of smoke and your home, and try to get in a pack a day, I was exhausted and broke, from all the stuff I did to hide it. Enough on the closet, this was the route I took off this board. See if you can get the  wellbrutrin prescription from your doctor, it takes the edge off of quitting, you have to be on it two weeks or so. Then you pick a quit date, get whatever you need to get you over the hump, nicotine gum, patches or inhaler. I used the inhaler. My suggestion to you, as you already are down to 6 to 8 a day, you substitube the inhaler for the nicotine you are taking in. Then post often on the board, everyday if you can to get you over the rough times, there is always someone reading the board. But whatever you do don't tell yourself "just one more puff",  after you quit. The  word "NOPE", not one puff ever, that is what I took from this board, a wonderful lady instilled that in my mind, named Shelly. Getting your mind set  on quitting, go to the archives and read the old posts, there is also a web site that can help you see another side of why to quit, www.whyquit.com . That helped me, then there is this meter, that gives you an inscentive. Hope this helps, I fought with smoking so many years, it is really something to say "I'm smoke free".

Thanks for responding

I appreciate the response and the advice.  I always used stress to smoke: and I am still afraid of the bad moods and the gaining weight - I just don't want to take my bad moods out on my beautiful children. How do I get that same feeling of sneaking out to smoke when the kids are too much or the day is too long??Again, I appreciate all of the help.  I actually took wellbutrin 6 years a go when we decided to get pregnant and it did work - so maybe it will work again.

I was a closet smoker for 7 years, my husband didn't know or at least didn't say anything.  I could go hours with out a smoke, and thought it would be so easy to quit.  It wasn't!  I am still smoking, yes my dear friends on this baord I am still smoking!  Urhghghghg I wish I could just quit.  One day I will be thier!  (I am working more and more at my other job and when it is full time in Janaury I know i will quit for sure. ) I just need to try and I think that is all anyone needs to do, is just really try.  Keep yacking on this baord....I havent' been on in awhile as I feel to quilty for being a smoker.  By the way, I wonder what Shelly is doing?

Anyhow, good luck everyone and keep it up!  :-)
