I quit my job-and I feel relieved, yet flustered. I see you still feel bad..I do know its a chemical imbalance in the brain..and if only they could find a cure(maybe invest millions like they do with other life threatening diseases..) half the jails wouldn't be needed-and people such as you,my brother..and many others..wouldn't have to watch life go by-and struggle so hard daily. medicines, are unfortunatley needed-but they have side-effects..my brother has had voices really bad lately-spends too much time watching dvds, eats too much-chain smokes-and theres nothing anyone can do. I know he goes to program-but his heart can't take the over 350? lbs.,of stress on it. Some med. help him,but others are terrible. He shouldn't be in his own apartment-because he wastes his money-tyhen relys on us family memebers, who r struggling wkly, for help-plus I dont c many nurses ,or doctors really helping him. Good thing is,he's not in the city-he's close to us. We need to give him more time-but sometimes its hard, with kids, and high gas-He's usually brite and cheerful, every time he calls.Like sunshine. I would suggest exersize,zen-meditation-get a cat..animals are so loving-and they help people alot. Draw,or paint-write random thoughts, then toss them in the trash..just to vent. Learn an instrument? Happiness is a choice-but I think the meds-can contribute to side effects-that can lead you to a dark place. Let your doctors know-how your feeling-use a tape-recorder if that helps. God Bless you-and take away your pain.

things dealing with this diease all ways seem to get way worse befor they get any better. i just spent 10 days on a manic high, and then 4 in the hospital.it worked and im doing much better so just hang in there. if u cant cope admit yourself and stay there a few days. you might be surprised how much it can help.

knee pain

Quote From: ponyride

everything is okay.  I never knew about the thyroid.  I've had mine checked years ago and it was okay.  This Friday I go in for my big check up.

My friend that recently died of cancer has a daughter who has been keeping in touch with me by email.  She sent me a picture of her and her mom while she was in hospise.  Carol, my friend, doesn't look good at all and it sort of shocked me at the advancement of cancer and how it made her look.  Debbie is going to send more pics later.  Hopefully they won't be so shocking.

I have off babysitting this week.  The weather has been so great.  I've been getting a sunburn out on the deck.  This Colorado sun really helps my bipolar illness in a good way.  The only problem I've been having is getting out of breath cuz of the high altitude and my knees and ankle hurt so bad from going up and down hills.  I've had knee problems since forever.  It seems like it's always something after turning 50.  (I'm 55)

Gotta go for now.  Hope you and everyone else are having a good week.

Susan

My knee pain greatly improved by putting orthotic shoe inserts in my shoes.  I got the Dr. Scholl's kind over the counter.  I now have good arch support, and my knees and ankles thank me for it.

I am feeling better today...the med dose changes are working well for me.  My ears are still really hurting though...must be some kind of virus.

Gotta go pay some bills...Becky

bipolar disorder in children

hello, this is my 1st time posting on this message board. i do not have bipolar disorder but i do have a 15 year old son that has been diagnosed with cyclothymia and a 4 year old daughter that has been diagnosed with a "mood dysregulation", me and my ex-husband share custody of my son and the only time my son receives treatment is when he is with me, his father never does any follow up therapy when he returns home, his idea is that my son is a spoiled brat and needs a good spanking, he is in denial. me and my husband now fully agree something is wrong with our daughter and she is receiving therapy, she was first put on risperdale and it worked good but soon fizzled out, she then went on abilify and that settled things down but she wasn't where the doctor wanted her so she then went on depakote sprinkles and this was the worst thing we could have done, she become unbearable. doc decided today to let her dry out a little while and keep her on just melatonin and have another eeg done.i watch the dr. phil show as much as i can but i have never seen or heard of a show on bipolar children, has anyone seen a show about early on-set bipolar in children? i believe my 2 children inherited this disorder from my father's side of the family, although my grandfather was never diagnosed, he really fit the descriptionof everything i've read about with the disorder. was wondering if there are other parents who have have their children diagnosed also?

My 14 year old son has a tenative diagnosis of bipolar...he has had ADHD symptoms for years with mood instability.  He is now on Lamictal and doing much better.  We are struggling with school issues and honesty when it comes to assignments and homework.  He also has Narcolepsy.

Many mood disorders and behavior disorders can be linked to sleep disorders.  You might want to talk with your kids' doctors about having sleep studies done on both kids.  Besides the mood problem, our middle son has Narcolepsy, and he is taking Provigil for that.  The Provigil not only helps keep him awake and paying attention, but it also has improved his moods.

Welcome to the board, and please keep us posted on you you and your family are doing...Becky

Bipolar and Military service

My 16 year old step son has been diagnosed with ADD and bipolar.  His 18-year-old brother has enlisted in the Marines, and now he is upset and down because he thinks he can never serve in any branch of the military like his brother because of his having to take medications.
I am afraid he will not be able to go into the National Guard because of this. We try to be as encouraging as we can, but he somehow just thinks he is no good and is a failure.  We tell him every chance we get that he needs to focus on the good things he can do, and people with handicaps do have to work a little harder, but opportunity is out there.
Does anyone know if it is possible for someone to serve in any military branch having been diagnosed with bipolar?  I know he has limitations as to what he can be assigned to, but I really think he would apply himself if he were allowed to enlist.

hello, i do not know for sure if people with bipolar can get into the military or not but my 15 year old son was diagnosed with bipolar and i think the 3rd, doctor that treated him asked my son what he wanted to do with his life and my son told him that he wanted to go into the army and his doctor said that the militay does not accept people who have a mental illness, and then he said "the last thing they want to do is put a gun in the hands of someone who is mentally unstable". i was upset at his comment. like i said this may just be something he said in attempts to get my son to try to straighten up or it may be fact, maybe someone else reading your post will have more details. take care

Mabye, its just because my brain has been working overtime it seems. For school, that is. I've been okay with the Bipolar but my blood pressure has been monitored for a month and today, my doc put me on a high blood pressure pill. Great....just what I need .....another pill. That's gonna make me pee more. Thank goodness, my classes are at night.

I can't do my bio tonight......i've got to go relax. I have been going going going, every day.

I guess it is of no use encouraging him toward a military career.  Thanks for your input.  I didn't think it was possible, but this is something he really wanted to do.  What we need to do now is have him working and occupied so he won't have time to think about it.  How did your son respond to the doctor saying this?

I don't know if bipolar is passed down through family or not.  I'm bipolar and my step son was recently diagnosed.  My husband's grandmother has been on psychiatric medication for many, many years and cannot go without it.  My husband or his other son, and my son as well have had no problems.  It's still mysterious to me.
