The Dr. Phil show is kicking off its sixth season, so buckle up because Dr. Phil is coming at you with intensity! This year, he tackles the news stories that impact you – from celebrity meltdowns to school tragedies. He delivers the news to you as it breaks on a revolutionary, high-tech news platform that will change the way you stay informed! Today, he exposes a deadly trend that’s sweeping the nation: driving while sending text messages. Between Blackberrys and cell phones, Americans have a harder and harder time keeping their eyes on the road, but with teens, the problem is even worse. Seventeen-year-old Chelsea averages 5,000 text messages a month and insists that she can text while driving a stick shift. What will it take for her to put the brakes on her dangerous hobby? Plus, Patrick killed a man while texting and driving, and he’s still living with guilt. Will his tragic story be a wake-up call for Chelsea? Share your thoughts, join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

Agree Fully!

Quote From: stoopstroop

I have to say I was actually angry with this mom as I sat and watched the show tonight. Just who is the parent anyway? The daughter throws a tantrum and mom hands her the phone back. Mom, if your daughter was going through drug withdrawls and she was depressed would you go out and buy her drugs so she won't go through withdrawls? Of course not! You have a responsibility to your daughter to make responsible choices to protect her (and the innocent bystanders) even if it is not what she wants you to do.

Ok you don't want to take away her phone? Then you have 2 alternate methods. 1. Call the cell phone company and tell  them to disable/ block incoming/outgoing text messaging features. OR # 2. Tell your daughter ok.... you don't want to give up your cell phone? Then I'll take your car keys. You can have one or the other, but not both.

My son may hate me for the day or even a week for placing restrictions on him when he makes unsafe choices. But I'll tell you, I would rather have my son angry at me for a week then for him to be gone forever.

So to Chelsea's mom........ You are the parent, take control of the situation and do NOT give in. Just like a junkie can get through drug withdrawls.......Your daughter can get through texting withdrawls.

Sorry for the rant all, but GRRRRRRRRRR this episode got me boiling.

I fully agree!! Having a phone to keep in contact is totally different than texting. That mother needs to cancel her text  feature. My girlfriend was in an accident with a young mother who was texting while driving. This young lady drifted into the path of my friend (her young daughters were in the car) and they had a head on collision. Luckily my friend and her children were only slightly injured, unfortunately the young mother was not and she passed on the way to the hospital. She had a newborn baby in the back seat that was unhurt, but what a tragedy for both families.

We are all at risk

When we are in our cars, we are all at risk of people that are not paying attentioon to their driving.  The first incident I personally saw, was a man driving ahead of me.  He made an instant U turn, going up into someone's yard, and almost rolling his SUV.  As I passed, I could see the cell phone pressed to his ear.
When stopped at lights at intersections, and there are a line of cars passing, it is most usual to see that half of the drivers are on cell phones.

Teens are not such great drivers, anyway, and it is irresponsible for them to be on cell phones when they drive.  There is a three mile, winding road up to our small community in southern CA, and in the years we have lived up here, there have been at least 20 teens (an one who was 20 yrs. old) who have died on that stretch of road.

We never know when it will be us, or one of our loved ones who will be the next victim.

Texting and driving

The parent on this show only needs to do one thing as far as I can see.  Remove the text feature from the phone and give her daughter a Blue Tooth.  Short of doing that, her only other step would be to removed one or the other from the mix, car or phone.  It took only 5 minutes for me to see that the daughter was self centered and had no sympanthy for anyone that she could hurt or kill while driving and texting.

09/10 Season 6 Premiere!

I dont think that the mom will take away the phone and then she is going to be sitting up on stage next time because she is going to kill someone.   Dr. Phil should have had the phone taken away then and there.  The mom says she will but I dont believe it is going to happen.

Guilty

As much as I hate to admit it I've done it too. I haven't done it very often but I guess once is just too much. I can tell you that after todays show I will never do it again. Plus I am in the process of teaching my 15 year old daughter how to drive and that sure is a bad example. She already knows that I do check her message times and dates because she texts about 6000 or more a month, a little less now that school has started. But, I will continue to check that to be sure that when she does start driving on her own she will be safe and so will everyone else.

09/10 Season 6 Premiere!

I was glad that Dr. Phil bropught up this subject. I do think he should have addressed talking on the cell phone as well. We all survived without cell phones before they were around. What's the big deal? I was really suprised that Dr. Phil didn't come up with the obvious alternative. You don't want to give up the phone? Fine. Give me the car keys.m Simple. I also think that this mother needs a wake up call, I just hope it isn't a fatal one.I wish Dr. Phil all the best in this sixth season.

wrong

Quote From: theunit

Raising children is hard in this day and age but they need to know the consequences of their actions. If the young lady in question does not want to give up her phone then do the next best thing take the car away. She wants to act like a child treat her like one. Yes it will be inconvient if her parents have to drive her everywhere but maybe then she will learn that having a car and phone are a necessity and not a privilege. Also she needs to think of others not just herself. What happens if she kills someone heaven forbid but it could be a friend or loved one. Her failure on the test should set off all the alarms and she seemed to care less.
 pivledge, not a necessity!

Disgusted

I have to say that I was disgusted with Chelsea'a attitude about texting while driving. She was laughing and smiling the whole time, like it was a joke. That shows just how imature she is. Meaning, she should either not be driving or not have a cell phone. Simple as that. If her mother feels that she wants her daughter to have a cell phone for emergencies, take text messaging off the phone. She does not need text messaging for emergencies.  Chelsea, if you are reading this. It is time to not be so selfish anymore and grow up. You are old enough to drive now, its time to grow up.  If you were in a wreck with one of my family members and you hurt one of them, I promise, I would never let you forget it.

The WORST ADVISE!!!!

Dr. Phil was WAY off on his advise.  His advise for Chelsea should have been to take away her car, not her phone.  She seemed WAY to immature and irresponsible to be driving.  Furthermore, she has had 3 accidents within the first four months of driving.  Texting or not, she has terrible judgement and should not be on the road!  I think just taking the phone away is a poor solution to this problem.

tday's show text messaging

If I'm not mistaken, the State of CA has passed a law that talking on cell phones in your vehicle is illegal.  I believe that law is to take effect in Jan 2008.  I hope texting on the phone as well as talking is included in this law.  All teenagers need very strict restrictions when they first get behind the wheel of a vehicle.  The restrictions should include:  no radio, no cell phone, no passengers under the age of 21. I believe this should be the norm until the teenager is 18 years of age.  Teenagers believe they are invinceable and that nothing bad can happen to them as "they are o good at textmessaging'!!!!!!!  Guess again.  Mothers and fathers can give their "smart" teens a choice, the car or the phone and DO NOT BACK DOWN.
